Part 1 of a start to finish billet aluminum project made on a Shapeoko HDM with 1.5kw spindle.
Part two will consist of Fusion 360 CAM and deep diving into feeds and speeds.
**This HDM is a pre-production unit with a prototype electronics enclosure**

This is great! Thank you. When I posted that on the forum I never expected someone to take the project and run with it. This has been beyond helpful, and I’m in the process of putting an order together for everything you used in the video, including those clamps! They look amazing. Thank you so much for taking this on.

Did you notice the part deflection in the drilling? Lotta forces there! Nice video..nice little hobby machine!

Fwiw, any time I’m doing an adaptive with a helical entry I try to predrill. If you drill larger than the end mill and specify the pre drill point in the proper tab on the adaptive it will just plunge into the hole without the the helical bore. Faster and saves wear on the end mill. But even if I am using a drill smaller than the end mill earlier in the process I’ll still use it to predrill and then specify that point as the entry point. It will still do a helical bore but at least some material is gone from the center so it’s not cutting full width of the end mill. Enjoyed your video!

Looking forward to 2022 and seeing more of what you share! Appreciate you and SMW! Also got a ProvenCut subscription for Christmas, and I’m hoping my HDM will ship next week!

That's awesome and thanks for the support! I'm still adding recipes on ProvenCut daily so just send in a request if there is anything we don't have that you would like to see. Congrats on the machine! The HDM is currently the top performing desktop machine Ive run yet

Thanks for the group shout-out. :) Grab yourself one of the Rii mini keyboards. The jogging is so nice with one of those. Not as good as an encoder wheel, but still better than a laptop keyboard.

Community pride lol, those keyboards chip resistant? I was actually planning on using a Tormach waterproof keyboard but its not wireless, running out of usb spots
@iwannaratrod
@iwannaratrod 2 года назад
@@vinceramirez4463 I got a USB hub to solve the ports issue as my Fusion 5 tablets only have one USB port. The Rii keyboard is not much bigger than palm sized and has a rubberlike membrane keypad. The directional pad does X and Y, and pgup/pgdn jog Z. It's super simple and I haven't managed to kill one yet.

Hey die the drilling check out Helical or Fullerton 3 flute drills for aluminum. They will dramatically improve the cutting action and improve the accuracy of your holes 😁.

I currently have a bantam tools machine for machining aluminum and having some reservations. Would you say this is a better machine? Any others I should look at that are comparative or should I just bite the bullet on a tormach 440?
@LoneWolfPrecisionLLC
@LoneWolfPrecisionLLC 2 года назад
The tormach is going to hold up better for metal. The increased mass helps

Awesome, an observation I made is that the part was flexing through some of the processes, on the initial facing and then during the drills. Is this a concern? I'm looking to import one of these machines. I've been an avid follower of you for some years over in Instagram and your content interests me the most as there is a lot of automotive performance based content with this machine.

I go over the workholding and issues with the facing/drilling in Part 2. Most of the problem comes from a lack of planning but are easily fixable and/or compensated for. Thanks for the support! I plan to add more automotive stuff on here as well

@@vinceramirez4463 Awesome, thanks for the response. Im torn between the Pro and the HDM, Pro as its in stock, HDM with a 4 month lead time, but the car has to be finished by this date. Not ideal.
@vinceramirez4463
@vinceramirez4463 2 года назад
@@GizFab that is a pickle, if it helps, I have both machines here and can run some side by sides or give advice if you would like. The HDM is a much stronger machine with a next generation controller and higher voltage plus bigger steppers and 4x the movement resolution of belts. The Pro is still pretty rigid but you'll be at the mercy of a loud router, still capable in aluminum though.
@GizFab
@GizFab 2 года назад
@@vinceramirez4463 Upon looking it appears they won't ship the HDM as its pre-assembled. Seems my choice would be the Pro and then look at upgrading the spindle.
@xConundrumx
@xConundrumx Год назад
What I don't get about this machine, is how the spindle is mounted. The holding clamp is pretty high up on the spindle body. Would it not be better to add a second clamp or at least keep the distance to the actual tool from the clamp smaller (for rigidity, resonance, flexing etc)?

Where is part B ?????
@slowsloth2519
@slowsloth2519 2 года назад
So the part moves quite a bit axially, you can see of the back left corner when drilling, was this because of the work holding? The mod vise should be plenty strong for that, or was it the tape and superglue and the bow in the part itself?
@vinceramirez4463
@vinceramirez4463 2 года назад
I go over it in the feeds and speeds part that's coming out soon. Its mostly a lack of glue, axial force due to drilling and me probably not seating the part great in the vise. Its accounted for in cam before running.
