Simple Minds have been musical pioneers for 40 glittering years. Catching the mood of the post-punk era, when the angry sounds of 1977 were splintering into a thousand different shapes, they emerged with a style rooted in the art-rock of David Bowie and the electronic dance of Donna Summer. They went on to become one of the great bands of their generation, deploying rousing choruses and booming atmospherics to provide a soundtrack that has endured. They topped the American chart with Don't You (Forget About Me) and followed suit in the UK with the Ballad Of The Streets EP (featuring Belfast Child). In selling over 60 million records, they have seen three of their 20 studio albums reach number one in the UK - Sparkle In The Rain, Once Upon A Time and Street Fighting Years - a chart-topping feat equalled by their live album Live In The City Of Light and the compilation Glittering Prize. A spellbinding touring band, they have graced the world's biggest stadiums. They starred at Live Aid and played three momentous London shows in honour of Nelson Mandela. The past decade has also seen a remarkable resurgence, their world-class credentials acknowledged by a Q magazine Inspiration award in 2014 and an Ivor Novello in 2016. They are now marking their 40th anniversary with a world tour, live album and career-spanning compilation.

It was a cold rainy november day in 1985. I was sitting by the large window in a coin laundry waiting on the wash. This song was playing rather loud on a radio. I was thinking about the beauty I was going to pick up around 7:00. I thought to myself "This is my soundtrack!"

This song brings so many memorable times with my ex, who is no longer part of my life, but when I hear it now, I get crushed with emotion, raise a glass and pray she is well. Such an amazing song. This song popped up on RU-vid music. Usually it pisses me off they do that when I'm listening to my music. But in this case I was very happy. Such a great song. The writing, playing and production. At 57 I can still move my neck!

Mel Gaynor pulling that monstrous string of 32nd note triplets on the snare leading into the outro Chorus just propels it to the finish. He gave them the sound they needed to define them as a big performance band- without a doubt!

Charlie Burchill makes such beautiful sounds. He makes me want more. People feel elated and inspired, that is why we sing and dance. If you had ever been to a Simple Minds concert you would understand.

So true! I've been lucky enough to see them a few times and it's always the same interaction. I saw Guns 'n Roses a couple of years ago (admittedly not at their peak) and there was no interaction at all, particularly from Axl. He looked bored and was only there for the paycheck. Jim and crew are the genuine article and clearly enjoy what they do and don't take their audience for granted.

Amazing song. Love this. Don't know why it's taken me so long, but really getting into Simple Minds lately. I was a kid when 'She's a River' came out, and just listened to it again for the first time in 10-20 years. Forgot how good it is when a song gives you goosebumps and you have it on repeat. I have a question for any big fans out there: in the early 2000s there was a dance song, 'Liquid People V Simple Minds - Monster'. I'm trying to find the original Simple Minds song that it samples. Anyone have any ideas? Also if you've got any songs I should check out in particular I'm all ears too! Thanks guys.
