I'm a SW PA guy myself. Spent some time watching Joe Humphreys fish. He had a front pocket on his vest just for different sized split shot. He'd be adding or removing shot as he moved up the stream. The split shot didn't seem to affect his strike detection! And he'd often quote that old axiom "the difference between a good nymph fisherman and a great one is one more split shot!" Great video - love all your stuff, keep'em coming:)

You are correct. For anyone learning euronymphing just swop out your 2 wet fly setup for perdigon nymphs. This is a different METHOD for fly fishing. Start catching fish then move up into the proper gear and change METHODS depending on the day. Hi from Ireland.

I think about how once or twice a year I work on tying leaders for euro nymphimg, and spooling them on leader spools. It seems that my leaders last a long time before I need to change them. However, it clearly makes sense to use your approach since it’s a lot easier. I think too many guys try to follow the advice of certain fishers and use the leader formulas. With your approach, once and done. Great advice and examples. .

Woa, you just let the air out of a lot of folks' articles and blog posts about leader formulas. Love it. I'm in your camp. If you want to geek out over leader formulas, knock yourself out. However, you can catch fish without all the complexity, imo. I use, and recommend it to newbies, a knotless French nymphing leader. It's almost 30ft. Tie it on and start using it. I also agree that a split shot doesn't make THAT big a difference on strike detection. I'd be curious to see if that tiny bit of difference in weight can really be felt by the angler, or is it just psychological. I think you see the line move before you feel a fish anyway. Good stuff, man.

Thank you for your videos. They are very informative and entertaining. Plus, I really like your emphasis on simplicity. Could I ask you question? As you surely know, the emphasis with the comp folks (Devin Olsen, Lance Egan, etc.) is on micro-thin leaders (for example, using 4x sighter material as the entire "line."). Do you have any thoughts on this trend?
@Brownsylvania
@Brownsylvania 3 года назад
You're welcome and thanks for watching! I don't see myself changing from the simplicity of just have one colored mono line that goes to a tippet ring and then my tippet. I think that the thinner the mono line is the better off you'll be with feeling strikes and having less sag in the line. The problem is the thinner you get the harder it gets to use this method of fishing on even the slightest of windy days. I will say this though, I was using 15lb Amnesia for over a year when I first started using this rig and going from 15lb to 20lb there was no noticeable difference in strike detection, but a clear win with the amount of wind the rig could deal with. Anything below 15lb starts to compromise usability and overall strength, but this is something I may look into more. Thanks!

@TB-zh9pe
@TB-zh9pe 3 года назад
You make a good point. Why bother adding a tapered leader section between your 20# Amnesia and your tippet if you can simply add a tippet ring and tippet to your Amnesia, and still get the leader to turn over. Your rig also eliminates leader knots going in and out of your guides. I've been using a 6 foot tapered section between my Amnesia and my tippet (which is usually 6 to 8 feet long), but I will try your rig. Eliminating the tapered section may increase line sag from the 20# Amnesia, but the Amnesia sags so little, especially compared to fly line, that it apparently doesn't matter. Simplification is good, and a key to efficiency. A lot of guys use 20# Maxima Chameleon for mono rigs. I tried Chameleon, but I prefer Amnesia.
@blackflycreations
@blackflycreations 3 года назад
Excellent video! Love the simplicity it seems perfect for beginners and advanced. There just fish and I also feel things get a bit "gimmicky"...However I've been using 20# amnesia to 12# maxima camelion to a 10# red green sighter to my tippet. I find the 2 colors of sighter easier for my blind eyes to see. I rarely have to change anything accept my tippet which I can easily adjust using a tippet ring I keep tied to my sighter. I will say I don't think my ways better at all its just what I currently use, and I feel the diff lines "tapering down" allow for a little better loop when casting. Does your set up seem to cast a loop for longer reach casts? I understand it's not fly line for 40ft casts but I like to throw a streamer on this rig as well as nymphing. I may try your rig as it would be way more simple especially for teaching my boys. I also like the way your system has less connection knots that can fail. Anyways sorry for the novel..haha.. Thank you for sharing and tight lines! New sub! Steve @Blackflycreations I also have a new youtube if your interested "just don't laugh" I'm still learning to film edit fish tie flies etc etc..✌

Thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I do not seem to have any casting issues and I frequently fish this rig 40ft away for both nymphs and streamers. I also have a video on my channel here explaining this same rig for streamers. I do understand some people like having a second color, but I decided to go all red since I seem to never be able to see green/yellow as good as red. It's all preference though. If you try the rig out let me know how it goes.

Catching up on your videos after hearing you on wade out there. Not sure if this has been brought up, but for fly fishing only sections I think the max leader length is 18 feet. Has that regulation changed? I love the simple set up for bouncing nymphs and streamers. I just want to keep it within the regs.

Really enjoyed the video, great tips and a beautiful setting for some wonderful fish. I too used Berkley Vanish when I first started out fly fishing, and still have some spools of 2 thru 6lb that I'm using up. Lately I've been trying Seaguar Red Label on the recommendation of Scott from the channel 'PA WOODS N WATER', another fantastic channel to check out for anyone who hasn't found it already. It's ever so slightly thinner diameter than the Vanish, cheap on Amazon, and I haven't had any issues with it thus far. Quick question about the Amnesia - you're obviously catching plenty of fish, but do you ever wonder if the bright red color of the line is visible to fish and may result in spooking a few? I know you're keeping it off the water but I'm inclined to believe they can still see it in the air better than they can a clear colored line. Finally, do you keep a spare spool for that Sage on hand in case you want to switch to a proper fly line for dries/etc.? As a novice angler, I too have been overwhelmed and frustrated by the multitude of options for leader formulae and specialty products for 'Euro-nymphing' (which, let's be honest, was being practiced right here in the USA in parallel with our European colleagues all the while). I think it's safe to say that the 'Euro-nymphing' phenomenon has provided the industry with a great excuse to market all kinds of nifty gizmos and gadgets to us in the service of 'optimizing your nymphing game'. I can't justify paying for premium fluorocarbon at those prices, and I find the concept of dedicated competition nymphing lines really limiting for the all-arounder angler who wants to be able to just fish with a minimum of fuss and easily transition from nymphing to dries to swinging wets to streamers...etc. I did drink the Kool-Aid and purchase a Rio Euro Nymph Shorty head as an intermediary between my WF3F line and my nymphing leader, and thus far have been underwhelmed. Not much improvement upon simply running a long mono butt section, which I had done previously. I am using a Syndicate 10' 3wt rod and to be honest, while it's certainly _lighter_ than my Redington Classic Trout 9' 5wt, I'm not totally convinced it is really that much more _sensitive._ I'm experiencing some buyers' remorse that I didn't go with my gut and get the 2wt. I do appreciate the extended reach, though. Perhaps you've covered this in previous videos, but what rod(s) do you like for sensitivity when nymph fishing? Thanks very much & looking forward to more valuable content in the future! Seán
@Brownsylvania
@Brownsylvania 4 года назад
Thanks for the conversation starter. I have thought about the line being seen by the fish, but I don't seem to notice a difference between I used to run clear mono with a sighter. Also, I use this rig with streamers and the red Amnesia will be under water and laying on top and I've had good success with streamers in both clear and murky water conditions. I do not keep a spare spool as I'm not big on dry fly fishing. It just hasn't peaked my interest. I used to do it, but honestly it's so rare that I even get to the stream when there's a good enough hatch to make me want to switch. I definitely notice a difference when using an actual euro nymphing specific rod. It's not enough of a difference for some people to care about, but I'm glad I have my euro rods. I have 2. A 10' 3wt Echo Shadow II and a 10' 6" 4wt Echo Shadow II.
@seanearnest
@seanearnest 4 года назад
@@Brownsylvania No problem, thanks for the follow-up. I wish I'd had a chance to test the Syndicate alongside the Echo Shadow II, Risen 23PS, new Orvis Clearwater Nymph, and Cortland Nymph Series. Perhaps I will have the chance to do that someday. Until then I am left wondering what I'm missing in terms of sensitivity and strike detection. Evidently the Sage ESN and new Orvis Recon and Helios nymph rods are meant to be in a class of their own, just far superior sensitivity. The guys over at Backyard Angling channel did a helpful breakdown of a few of these rods and did say the Syndicate wasn't the most sensitive of the lot, but being in my price range and seeing so many rave reviews, I figured I was pretty safe. Even with fairly heavyweight nymphs and a long mono butt section and thin tippet, I have missed a couple of really nice fish including a huge wild rainbow on Big Spring Creek because the fish picked up the fly and I couldn't feel it. Admittedly, I am new to this style of nymphing so there is bound to be a learning curve, but I guess I expected a bit more out of a $325 rod. The Syndicate just feels lighter in my hand compared to my 9' 5wt Redington Classic Trout. I know it shouldn't because they are different tapers. I don't want to overload my rig with too many split shot, but sometimes I feel like the only way I can feel the bottom and ensure I'm getting good drifts is to go heavy and back off if necessary. But that isn't ideal when the fish aren't feeding at the absolute bottom of the water column. I'm probably missing something and just adjusting to this new method, and have caught a good many very respectable fish on the new rod, but I am always looking for ways to get the most out of it and not miss so many fish! Thanks again.

Question, this is mainly because I've not used a euro specific rod but am about to get one for it. 10ft 3wt rod, with this leader setup, can you switch to using an indicator pretty simply or is that ridiculous for a euro setup? I know euro rigs have limits with distance, that's why I ask.

All one size. So the Amnesia is all the same size and then it comes down to the tippet ring and then the tippet is all one size as well. Hope that helps!

@@Brownsylvania what size tippett do you use? Do you streamer fish with that same setup? I'm guessing you have a separate rod if you want to dry fly?
@Brownsylvania
@Brownsylvania 3 года назад
I usually use 4lb sometimes I'll go to 6lb if I feel I need to. I do use this for streamers also and I use 14lb when throwing streamers. Yeah I barely ever use dries so I just don't worry about it really. lol

@@Brownsylvania thanks from England!, also how long is your leader, from the amnesia?
@Brownsylvania
@Brownsylvania 3 года назад
You're welcome! The Amnesia is the leader and then I run about 6ft of tippet from the tippet ring. Sometimes more, sometimes less. Just depends on the water I'm fishing.

Do you have a standard tippet length and size after the sighter and tippet ring? I just got a euro rod and feel like i’m not getting deep enough.
@Brownsylvania
@Brownsylvania 3 года назад
I typically run about 5-6 feet of tippet and then if I am fishing say 2 feet of water then I just hold my rod higher/keep the tippet ring higher off the water to compensate.
@raisnerracing
@raisnerracing 3 года назад
@@Brownsylvania is 5-6 foot of tippet including your flies ? or 5-6 foot and then your flies ?
@Brownsylvania
@Brownsylvania 3 года назад
I'd say including, but don't be afraid to have too much. Be afraid of having too little. You can compensate by holding higher, but not if you don't have enough.

First you say 20# amnesia and later you say 30# amnesia. Which is correct? Thanks

20# Amnesia for my nymphing rig and 30# for my streamer rig, but you can use both on either setup. Also I think I said the backing is 30#.

Yessir! That's why I like using the Amnesia rig because the entire rig from the tippet ring to the reel is visible.

Why not just get a 10’ spin casting rod and reel and do this with 2 flies?

You could. I doubt the spin rod would cast the flies as good, but you could.

how can u tell whn you have a strike without the sighters?

With Amnesia the entire line is basically the sighter. You can still add in a yellow/green sighter piece if need be, but I find I can see red almost any time so I just use red.

@@Brownsylvania is it difficult
@Brownsylvania

I don't think it's difficult at all if you're using a euro specific rod. It works good with other rods too, but it can be a little learning curve casting on a non-euro rod, but one you get it down it works almost as good.

I see these wood turtles frequently.. they tend to cover more territory in a short time compared to a common box turtle. I tend to see one or two every year moving across my farm.

Wood turtles enjoy the same streams as trout in the northeast. They’re protected and need our help. Too many get hit on roads. They’re amazing creatures!

Doesn’t PA have a leader length regulation? I’m guessing technically they wouldn’t call your complete rig a leader

Good question. They do, but that's in the fly fishing only sections of streams. Even then the leader length regulation is 18ft and I have a setup for those scenarios.

@@Brownsylvania pretty sure you have to have fly line on your reel forff only areas. Also, backing gets wet - then sags. I dont agree with your reel set up
@Brownsylvania
@Brownsylvania 3 года назад
I'm not sure if you do or not, but to be honest I never fish FFO areas anyway. Also, with my setup the backing is never off the reel so it's never sagging. You don't have to agree with my setup. It works for me and others. Just use what works for you.
