What slow speed drills do you like to practice?

Thank you so much for the excellent video and description of this exercise. Thanks to you i quickly learned and can now do this with no issues, i paid a lot of money at a MSF course with a terrible instructor, rather than tell us what we did wrong or needed to do, he was in drill sergeant mode yelling and cussing us out, very horrible experience 😐 please keep doing these great videos 👍🙏

I'm blessed with a dead-end street.Having painted 4" dots to do a 10ft. cone weave then a 20' keyhole pattern after it. I hit it before and after a trip to town.Great warm up.

NJ makes this test suck! 12' apart, but then you have 2' offset! FAILED immediately as I practiced with some speed. Seeing you start from a stop, and first cone is offset left, go left. :(

@@unknownidentity3824 definitely more challenging on a sport bike with a cable clutch. Just takes more finesse with the clutch.

Could you please try the weave at these parameters...tall cones, 10ft between the cones (3m), 6.6ft total width you're allowed to use(2m) and a total of 10 cones? That is the standard slow cone weave test in Europe when you go to get your license. Thanks and keep up the nice work!

Is there a safe way to learn the elephant turn?

The safest way is to practice it on a lighter weight dirt bike first.

Hi I'm a beginner and trying to get my license but unfortunately my instructor is not very interested. On my second riding session ever I was told to go do this slow cone weave, throttle only, and had a lot of difficulty - sometimes I'd get thru it without hitting them other times I wouldn't. So the main tips on doing this you would say are: 1) Look ahead and use peripheral vision, do not look directly at the cone 2) Clutch and throttle control/friction zone 3) Hug the fuel tank with your legs Anything else I am missing? I am guessing at such slow speeds, I shouldn't try to 'counter steer', instead I am simply moving the handlebars right and left? I am having a hard time finding an explanation on the difference between slow cone wave and 'counter steer' weave.
@mototipz
@mototipz Год назад
Slow cone weave is steering more with bars and done at less than 10mph. A counter steer weave is typically done over 20mph. The slow cone weave can be done without the rear brake but your timing has to be very good. Utilizing the rear brake can help ensure you don't go too wide during the drill. Focus on looking a cone or two ahead, the friction zone, try not to go too wide, and keep the motorcycle upright. In order to get more confident you can start with the cones a little farther apart. Once you can do 3 in a row, shorten the distance between the cones. Hope that helps! Keep working on it and I'm sure you'll get it.

Is it best to keep a steady throttle but manipulate the power with the friction zone by cutting in and out of the friction zone or should I have my clutch out and slow and steady throttle slowing down only with my foot brake for the slow weaves? I really am struggling a bit with the slow speed stuff. Over 10 mph I feel much mpre comfortable turning and doing larger weaves and s turns but slow I just feel so afraid to turn my handlebars and I have a bit of a jerky throttle. I find it hard to manipulate the friction zone when im so focused on my throttle cuz the throttle is very hard for me to master as far as keeping it steady especially at trying to give it only light throttle. I really wanna get better at slow speed turning so do you think the weaves are a good way to practice that? What about doing left and right hand turns from a stop? How tight should I make my corners during exercise of turning from a stop? Like how far should my cones be out representing my corner border? I think im gonna make my corners bigger at first just to get the technique down than tighten up a little each time until I get it. So far ive only mustered up the courage to drive 1/4 mile from my house to a parking lot and I have to make 3 left turns to make to get there and 3 rigg6t turns to get home. I did ok since I had decent amount of space except 1 left turn into the parking lot itself I messed up because its a weird turn angle into a narrow entry. Today I wanna get in a real practice session as yesterday I only did larger figure 8s and stop and gos since it was my first time on my 1st bike sonI just wanted to get familiar with the weight of the bike and how it rides. Today I wanna get more technical and do slow speed stuff like weaves and stop and turns and rolling stops.

These are my exact same problems ! Still figuring it out.
@CantTreadOnMe
@CantTreadOnMe 5 месяцев назад
Steady throttle and its all friction zone. Domt be afraid to give a little more throttle as long as its steady cuz too little will be no good to you. Your friction zone is everything. What helped me was actually riding my bike around first before attempting slow speed maneuvering because I really didn't know my bike at all so it was hard for me to practice low speed stuff on a bike I knew nothing about. It doesn't hurt to go to a parking lot just to practice starts and stops and figure 8s but I decided I needed to just go outside my comfort zone and ride around and after some time I felt much more comfortable on the bike and then I went into the parking lot and practiced more basic and eventually more technical low speed maneuvers and I am significantly improved and much more confident now. I think for everyone, you just gotta get out of your head and do it and for everyone it will be a bit of a different path as to how. That's just how it worked best for me.

Hi. Thank you for your useful content. Since like you I am also in California, could you perhaps make a recommendation of place types that are forgiving for motorcyclist’s to practice in their parking spaces without security running you off? Thanking you in advance.
@mototipz
@mototipz 2 года назад
You generally can find spots in any neighborhood. I think the key is to be respectful and don't draw too much attention. If security asks you to go, just find another spot. I've practiced in parking lots at businesses, churches, and parks. Never been asked to leave.

Depends on what you want to focus on. You can go as slow as 2 mph or as fast 15 mph or possibly more. Somewhere in the 5 to 10 mph range is probably ideal.

For this drill I don't use counterweight. Just the bars and rear brake if needed. If you go faster you may need to lean the motorcycle a little.
