If I were starting over as a newcomer to oil painting, I would never have bothered with buying or making canvasses. I would have begun with oil on paper. For studies that came out well, I would then, and only then, , consider trying it on a larger canvass. The expense of canvass painting for a new-learner makes little sense.

Yes, for learning canvases can be expensive. Like you say, if we knew then what we know now!
