It's been fun watching your channel over the past three years. Nice to see that you've grown to well over 100,000 subscribers. Great job. It's been a pleasure. I'm excited about the new build coming up and continuing to watch you grow. Thanks for sharing. God bless
Great video. How do you plan to move the heat from the wood burner around the cabin now that the added wall will contain the heat in one room for the most part?
I love it!! You are doing an amazing job! A bookcase would look awesome in the nook by the stairs, but, if you wanted you could also put a walk in closet there for hanging clothes, shoes and boots, and other things. You could add upper shelves for extra storage, maybe a place for camping gear. Closet space is always great to have.
The big loft is awesome….and I love the wall dividing the kitchen and living room ! I’m sure you’ll enjoy both! Can’t wait to see the finishing touches! Always look forward to your videos!!
PS on all everything I've said it's your house design it the way you want it I'm just saying everybody today wants the open concept. I love your channel keep up the hard work keep up the videos I'm always watching. Just telling you what I would do which is not important because it's your house! It's you and Sierra! And it's your choice!.
That wall in the open space makes the warmth from the stove kept inside... If i may dream, ik would make a pallet coach and maybe a table you can scroll out... Les furniture..... Love that the tv.goes upstairs... I got rid of mine
Is there a reason you didn’t make that a half wall? Still all framed out for support but with openings. half wall would be better for heat exchange with the rest of cabin and up the stairs and open the kitchen to living room
hey Kyle...suggestion... cut a couple of openings in that new wall to let light and heat travel between the rooms...can put a shelf in the opening for Knick knacks also
Good job. You made short work of it in the video. I am not sure I like the layout. I prefer the open concept of the kitchen + great room. How will that big wood stove heat upstairs? Did you put in vents/fans? If it works for you and C, its okay with with too. Thanks for sharing.
Back in the days, a small 1000sqft home is good enough for a large family and 3-4 kids-and each room is divided up with walls which is actually good to save on heating and cooling cost. My first house was a cape cod like that. I personally like an open kitchen with living room, but for a cabin this make sense.
I have always thought you to be very clever Kyle but i think this latest wall has made your lounge very small. I understand why you have put the wall where it is due to the now upstairs loft space.
I was your 17 775 viewer of this video. So your cabin went from 960 sq foot to 1280 square foot. Major improvement. Your skills are awesome..!! Go Kyle and Cierra !!
Awesome project, Kyle. WEll done. I really like how it changed up your cabin. And your dad is a boss, by the way. I love when he is in your videos, whether it is helping you build or if you're just hanging out together. Y'all seem to have a good relationship. ☺️
I love the changes, I think that it's a great idea putting the wall up between the kitchen and living room. It will help cut down on noises, especially once little ones come along :-)
You know it will affect the heat. Living room is going to get too hot while the rest of cabin is going to be cold. He needs to cut openings in new middle wall to allow proper circulation of heat.
I think our cabins are the same foot print 20x32. My area is so windy i had to run rafter ties across all my rafters which doubled as floor joists, and then I did posts and beam under those for support so I could keep this space open. The upstairs is nice with the 12/12 pitch. Lots of head room. I made angled closest in mine and added a window on the gable ends. You're sure gonna have a lot more space now. Looking good.
Awesome work, Kyle. What about heat going to the kitchen and loft? Just wondered about that. Nice to see your dad. You are doing amazing things. Thanks for letting us come along for the ride. Sometimes, it just makes my day. Can't wait to see more. I bet Cierra was glad to be away, while the place was in disarray. lol Take care.
Television up in loft makes no sense. What about when you have company over or just entertaining family and friends? Also during the summer months isn't it going to be hot in the loft? What's your plans on cooling it down? I say leave the television alone. Also you need to add windows/openings to new middle wall so your living room won't overheat during the winter.
You could possibly cut an opening in the middle of that new wall put up between the kitchen and living room and put a little bar top there with 2/3 stools on each side for eating
Kyle I love what you are doing. I enjoy watching you work. You always have it worked out in your mind so you know what you are doing and you work quickly. I can see you guys snuggled up in your nice warm home this next winter. I think a nice bookcase would look really nice there. Maybe you could put it on hinges so that you could use that little bit of storage space. Just one thought and maybe you have already thought about it - I am concerned that it will be difficult getting up the stairs into the loft, especially if you are carrying anything. I would hate for anyone to fall. (I am an old lady so I notice those things.) Be safe and take good care of Skeeter and the chickens & ducks. They are so cute to watch. Love ya
Honestly I was afraid it would make the rooms smaller but it actually doesn't. It's amazing how it actually make them bigger. The living room looks nicer and more comfy and you gain more storage space in the kitchen because you can put anything you want against that wall. The result is perfect and the loft area is so big now. You sure can make something nice out of it.
My grandma heart jumped with joy when I heard you mention having children with your lovely Cierra ❤ Not only will you make the best parents... you have the perfect paradise to raise those babies! It looks great Kyle!
I love watching your channel . Where were the men like you when I was in my 30 when I was working like a man ? I'm 64 and feeling the had work in m bones now. I have 2 Adult sons that live with me and can't even pound as nail in straight. So sad. Wish you were my son. God bless you all. !!! ❤
Wow! That wall sure makes a difference..how will it affect the heating in the wintertime? I like how the kitchen looks, but I am sure Ciera will put her thoughts into a working space she likes! Great job for you & your dad!
I seriously like how you remodeled the inside. I cannot wait to see the finished loft and how you guys are going to redecorate your home. It is a beautiful cabin - both on the inside and outside.
Ok, you're like 10 days in to having a wall divider. How does the living room feel? How does the kitchen feel now? I'm building a 20x40' and need to make these design choices now, hah. Mine will have a 46" conditioned crawl space though so I will have pretty decent storage under the floors and can likely sneak a lot of my utility stuff under the floor and it still be "in the house". Also, I am curious about how you feel about the window sizes that you installed originally. Do you wish you installed bigger windows? or are they not a concern?
Nice that lumber prices are falling. Looked at the lumber futures the other day and they keep dropping, which is good. I know I looked at 2x10x16's back in May/June and they were insane pricewise. Like $42 per board. Looked last week and they were down by over $11 from that price. Not that that's "cheap" by any means, but it helps and hopefully continues to drop. Between the time futures drop and the price changes in the stores is a bit offset, but they're still dropping none the less. Now the issue is probably going to be scarcity of materials in general. It took me checking around most of the Twin Cities last week and there was only 1 that even had 10" concrete form tubes for the cabin I'm working on.
While the loft is a great useful addition, you may have made a mistake to put an entire front- to-back and floor-to-ceiling wall to support it. The wall will make heat from the woodstove side area difficult to get to the other side by kitchen. It would have been better to have a 1/2 tall wall with a narrow counter (maybe 14" wide?) and a self-built beam with posts to support loft. Position the posts above the block piers you made to accept the "punch load" of the loft. The "beam" could be 2"x 6"@3 pieces nailed together length your choice, like you did the floor support. You could leave open spaces for the heat to go all around. Access to the loft should be larger on both ends to also help heat transfer. Off grid means no big fans to help move heat around. The result would be a more "open plan" interior. I learned this the hard way in an old hunting cabin in mountains, turned into a "house" (built ~1942) with only woodstove for heat. As is now, you could still remove the wall long panels and still open it up. Just my 2-cents based on experience. I love your little kitty and skeeter. My cat misha follows me around like a dog and always wants to be close-by. Cheers, and happy life!
Your cabin is shaping up real nice. Loft is a great idea. You'll be much warmer in the winter now. I'm looking forward to seeing those kids! You have nice Dad, as he is visiting & helping you out again. Lucky you. Do you have any photo's of your Mom & Dad when they were young?
You have skills Kyle, and you sure know how to put them to good use! Whenever I've seen a full 2nd story being developed, usually in accordance with a building code or an engineer's review of the building, the builder usually installs a structural beam that runs the full length of the 2nd floor along with a few steel posts & plates to support that beam. Thereby providing ample support for the significant and accumulating weight of a fully developed 2nd floor, which in your case, is no longer functioning as a simple loft. I do see that you have a new off-centre, main floor wall that runs the length of your cabin, but how do you know that your 2nd floor development doesn't require a beam & posts, and without these, if you are taking on a safety risk? Your cabin is beautiful.
I wish I was taught a skill by a guardian figure... Then again, I wish my parents were taught a skill so they could've taught me so how far back in my lineage should I be angry? Maybe everyone? 😆 I was just told to go to college and deal with life 🙄🙃
Great job Kyle loved the look of kitchen living room and loft You are so talent in building Great to see your dad in video You both are a great team Take care and see you in next video Oh forgot to say hi to Skeeter and his brother
@KYLES CABIN - Good that you still have a dad and that you can talk with him. My dad was a very agressiev one. I wish i had a dad like you. Hold this in honor so long as you can.
I'm sure the wall will help with heating and cooling, but man all that space is just gone. Will this be your final home? Or are you planning to build onto/add smaller cabins around the property? Or getting another property to expand? I'd like to know both of your future plans to make sense of the additions and additional buildings.
Kyle, the ceiling looks boring compared to the tongue & grooved knotty pine. My suggestion would be to cover the ceiling with the same tongue & groove pine now that you have a full joist system up there. Just a thought. Take Care Brother
Looks pretty damm sweet, nice job. You might want to install a few fans though, one in the in the new wall and one towards the back in the back wall up where the TV was/is maybe even one in the ceiling right above the fireplace - they can be switched on to feed the hot air from the fireplace in to those rooms when it's going. That's the problem with partitioning off rooms, it makes moving the heat around a PIA. A few 12v 4" computer fans will make a heck of a difference tho ..... and they don't use bugger all for power.
Rather than a bookshelf, I would make it a gun/ammo storage place enclosed. Close to where it would be needed, and much more practical, and more secure if you have children or guests.
Man i remember when u 1st started this channel, ya come and gone thus far. Might close it in a bit, but it does say hey this is kitchen vs living room. Yes can't wait for some little Kyle's running around. ✌😄💝
Hi Kyle…i bought an eco flow air conditioner for my apartment and it says that I can use it without wenting it outside, but it doesn’t work..the hot air coming from the back of the unit is conflicting with the cold air coming out..I watched your video and thought for sure it would be great for my apartment, but, it’s not working for me..Did you have to vent it outside?
Everybody goes for the open design. Kitchen front room dining room. I would not have studied that well I would have put another beam in to carry the second floor. Just my opinion while she's cooking she needs to see the TV also and feel like she's part of the family that's why we do everything the way we do today we open houses everyday. Even in 1890 homes used to be a doorway in the kitchen and now we opened it up put an island or whatever but used to beam to carry the second floor
Really looks great. My only concern is the ladder to get into the loft. Is there enough room to put regular stairs? Otherwise I love the woodwork, love dividing up spaces, I really dislike all this open floor plan stuff.
Wow Kyle I bet them two x 4s Were pretty pricey. Here’s some food for thought. You could put a couple of dormer windows on each side of that loft And then you would have more light up there.
That fireplace corner must be the warmest place in the cabin. So install some sort of conduit right above the stove, up into the loft, perhaps an in-line fan to blow hot air upwards. Boom. You can install vents or a quiet fan to move warm LR air into kitchen.
On your next QA . I'm sure you told us what you do for a living but are you a carpenter or what do you do for a living. And why do you need a permit for your other cabin and you didn't For this one different counties
You did the same mistake I did in my work shop. You put the electrical box flush with the studs instead of sticking out for the board. I had to find extended screws to install the outlets.
