I really like this video--direct and looks doable. We rebuilt my porch last year, but haven't gotten around to putting up the railing. It's now on the list for this summer and I'll refer back to his video! It's a house built around 1920, so it has some quirks.

You'll love it when you get it done. Taking some time between the porch and railing could be nice, as now you really know what you want :)

Thank you for an awesome video I just finished putting a railing on my porch and it looks amazing thanks to you. I copied you exactly even down to the little support pieces. It looks great and my wife is happy. The wood I used was still a little bit moist because it was pressure-treated so I should be painting it in a couple of weeks.

My dad passed away before we could tackle the railing on our house. He was planning to teach me carpentry so I could do projects to improve the house over time. He was a carpenter of 43 years and passed away this past August. I have been dreading this, thinking it would be too complicated for me to learn but you gave me hope that I could even achieve this by myself. Thank you so much for this instructional video!

Good video. Thanks. I do the same thing with cavities. I usually place a dollar in a cavity and sometimes make a note as to the date, what's going on such as weather, Superbowl, Pandemics, things like that. I assume one day somebody will dismantle whatever I build and get a chuckle from what they find. Amazing you and I think alike. I like the video and I am about to build a railing around my front porch. My house is old (built in 1941). I totally re-furbished the house (10 years working on it). Thanks
@metaspencer
@metaspencer 4 года назад
Oh cool! I've put photos in a few cavities, as well, as it makes for a kind of time capsule. :) Great to hear I'm not alone! This porch was built on a house built in 1893, so it was definitely a bit out of square and level, so took a bit of improv to get it right. Good luck with your build!

Good video and commentary. I am about to tackle the same job on a small side porch with aluminum awning. Thinking of going with 2 tone using cream top and bottom plates with white ballisters for some contrast which will match exterior of my house. I can always repaint the ballisters if I don't like it. I like to paint pieces individually to seal end grain of each piece and with 2 different colors, I like a clean new look with no over run. At least it will look good until it needs new paint.

for the max 4" space between ballusters i just always go 3.5". make sure first one or post is plumb of course, then just hold up the 2x4 and place your balluster next to it, pop a finish nail to temp hold it and keep moving. check for plumb every 4 or 5 ballusters as you install. pretty fast. and to me looks better than 4" spacing. i know not that big of a difference but just my personal preference. when it comes to railing height, openings id rather know im over code than being right on bc that leaves some room for error if you get someone out there that wamts to be an engineer and says you are an 1/8 low from 36" haha
@metaspencer
@metaspencer 4 года назад
I like you're thinking: better safe than sorry. I'll try your narrower spacing on my next one just to see how it looks. Those little touches can make a big difference

@metaspencer
@metaspencer Год назад
You can look for "uniform building code" or just check with your local zoning official or documents ... residential rails tend to need to be 36" but there are some variation to that based on the type of building, location, height, etc
@cyclingcoach
@cyclingcoach 5 лет назад
Nice project, but I too noticed your baluster "botch"... probably would look nicer to have all the balusters on the porch side of the rail so the assembly points aren't visible when looking at your house from the street/sidewalks. Thanks for sharing. BTW... are those OSHA approved steel-toe crocks?
@metaspencer
@metaspencer 5 лет назад
I see your point -- symmetry is ideal, but I've found that in old houses like this one a few quirks fit in nicely. Oh yeah, the crocs are bomb proof ;) Take care
@vonkanon3091
@vonkanon3091 4 года назад
That bottom horizontal rail is going to rot so fast. Between each baluster is cup that'll hold water after every rain or snow melt. And did I miss the reason why you put the balusters? On the outside of the first rail section, but on the inside of the second rail section that runs between the house and the corner post.
@metaspencer
@metaspencer 4 года назад
Filling in those lower gaps is a good idea for sure. On a covered porch like this one it's a bit less of a concern, but still a good point. As for the baluster variation, it was all because of the variation on this old porch which is far from square

I love the idea of putting the money in the void. Imagine those people finding that ancient money when they replace that stuff after 100 years

@metaspencer One of the best video for railing. However, I would suggest listing the wood type used, what are the measurements, what kind of nails or screws, what kind of paints? Why not painting first then assemble? Does the PDF on esty include the info? Thank you so much

Great suggestions! I cover some of those details in that document on Etsy, but maybe not enough particulars for your taste. I'd be happy to chat about my wood, paint, and fastener preferences with. you over email though: metaspencer at gmail ... take care!

Hi! This is awesome! I'm gonna try doing this asap! I am also planning on wrapping my tall 4x4 posts with 1x4 & 1x6 cedar planks. Should I wrap the posts first THEN, add the railings? Also, what size screws you suggest for attaching the 2x4's to house and the tall posts? Thanks in advance!!

Definitely wrap those posts first -- I've done that several times and it's always been worth it for an improved dimension and look. For screws, look for outdoor rated construction or deck screws, which are not cheap, and they should be the longer ones so 3" or 3.5" ... good luck with the build! Predrill those screw holes and it'll be great

Hi! New subscriber here! Love the project! I was looking for an alternative pricing for porch railings. If you don't mind me asking, how much will I spend on wood for this project?! Please and Thank you!

Ya know, wood prices are variable and it depends on the size of your porch, but I spent about $300 including the paint on this one. Good luck with it!

Do you have a video on showing how you also built the stair rail for this?

For the piece you connected to the siding, did you end up caulking around that area? I'm new to any carpentry work so excuse if that's a newb question lol

Always a good idea to add sealant if there is any chance of water getting in there
