Detailed mapping and interpretation without a doubt the most important aspect of preparation before hitting the water. Thank you so much for stressing how important that is Thanks for another great presentation.
When making the first pass around the structure on the primary breakline (17 feet as described), are you actually following the 17 foot contour? Then later determining where each feature breaks.
hi Don,on mapping an interpretation if your breakline is 14 -17 ft but your deepest water is 2000 yds to the center of the lake is that a productive structure? \\\
Dear friends, in order to answer your question we first must review some of our structure fishing knowledge. Keep in mind, how we define the area we refer to as the deep water sanctuary. It’s the deepest water in the lake, the deepest water in an area of a lake, OR in some cases, it’s simply the deepest water available. In your question you seem to only care about the deepest water in the lake -which you said was approximately 2000 yards away from where you were fishing. So, in order to really try to answer your original question, we need more information about the structure. The only information given, was you were fishing a 14 ft. breakline! What was the structure? A bar, a hump, a saddle, a roadbed, etc., we simply need more information to make a proper judgment. For instance, let’s say just for fun, that the breakline was the primary on a bar that broke off the end at 14 feet into 35 feet of water. When interpreting structure, this particular bar would measure up and be productive. Now there might be 60 feet of water in the lake 2000 feet away BUT, the 35 foot water was the deepest water in the area of that structure and would therefore qualify as being productive. Let me give you one more example, let’s say our structure was a bar and it did break at 14 feet but, it also broke then at 22 feet into 29 feet and then eventually broke at 35 feet into 60 feet. Now let’s just throw this in to make the point. 2000 yards away there was 100 foot of water in this lake, the question is, would that make any difference in our interpretation? The answer is NO! It answered all of our questions on interpreting structure! First, it leads all the way from the shallows to deep water, (in this case the deepest water in the area) and it also had multiple breaklines and was breaking deeper than 14 feet. The drop off was it 35 feet into 60 feet. This would be a perfect structure in many ways, but yet it didn’t lead to the deepest water in the lake! Hope this makes my point and I hope it gives you some help moving forward. Warmest regards, DD
