I am impressed. I expected a standard rust tutorial, but you covered the steps well in a well paced video. You also covered the step to keep the rust from getting on other stuff. I feel like Nuclear Snail is kicking up their production quality a bit. Keep up the great work!

In most cases the rust preventive coating is zinc, it can also be removed with vinegar essence. If you have many small parts and dont want to sand them all by hand.

If you soak in vinegar, then eave it out in the air it will rust. also the vinegar will remove the zinc coating

I think this great done on a car all over especially around simulated rivets or screws holding body panels together. this would look even better on an old car like something from the fifties or sixties

To make things rusty you could also heat up the metal atleast red but the hotter the better effect and cool it in salt water (very salty)

I've tossed metal pieces with zinc coating in a fire and found them to rust nicely. heat burns off that coating, though it doesn't rough it up quite like sandpaper.

This is a valuable mini-tutorial, but I personally think it is a huge waste to use something as expensive and difficult to produce as honey as a simple masking. There are numerous substances that would work just as well if not better for this purpose. Wax, different kinds of grease, etc.

Those are petroleum based products, so really one could argue that everything that goes into their production is far more costly.

Really wanna get that honey off if you're at an out door event, unless you like wasps :) Also do you think vaseline (petroleum Jelly) might work in place of the honey?
@hummingmostbird

Dish soap will, though it needs to dry before painting, and might need more scrubbing than honey

i think anything tzhat blocks the paint from getting onto the part + can be then solved with water or otherwise easily removed will work. its just a physical blocker, all it is, honey or not.

Keep in mind petrol product won't dissolve in water :)

Really nice and simple tutorial. Thank you, Nuclear Snail and Wasteland Warriors! And here's the question for Mr.Snail - is your e-mail still active? Or there is better way to contact you?

What kind of effect would this have on aluminium, since that doesn't rust like steel?
@Ben-Doverbich

Uhm none......

There is actual ferrous Iron powder you could coat the aluminum piece with. That can be a way to add rust. I think it's a paint some miniatures use.
