No crazy storm this time, just a simple bug out winter bushcraft camping trip and some campfire cooking of a basic but high caloric meal to keep me warm through the freezing night. It had been raining for weeks prior to the snow and freezing temperatures, so finding suitable dry standing wood for the fire was very difficult in this location. I don't fell large dead standing trees for camping, unless it's a real survival situation, I depend on my sleeping gear to stay warm and alive. In larger diameter trees, splitting to the central dry part of the wood is always a safe bet to find dry wood. I only have permission in this location to use small diameter dead trees, problem is they are easily water logged and the moisture becomes frozen within. With a lot of patience and good humor, I managed to scrape and create a small fire to dry myself and cook a warming meal. I piled the wood close to the fire so radiant heat would help dry it quicker.
As shown in the video, you don't need a lot of gear to enjoy a night of winter camping, if something goes wrong with the shelter you bring, depending on day light, resources and time, you could make an emergency shelter out of natural materials. I avoid making/filming those because the time and damage to the area they create are considerable. I prefer the always prepared mentality and minimum impact when camping, always bringing some form of shelter with me. That said, knowing how to create a make shift natural shelter if really needed, is an essential skill before trying to wild camp in these conditions. Accidents happen, things break and can/do go wrong, so better to know how to improvise if SHTF. New videos every week, thanks for watching! - Ric
