Paul I damaged my knee walking the dog about 18months ago, result is I am awaiting knee surgery and until then my capacity to walk any distance is limited. Your videos are like a tonic, they take me to places I can no longer go, and your relaxed conversational manner is like spending time with an old friend. Thank you for doing what you do.
Unless you've been involved in a major accident or already had something serious like rheumatoid arthritis, I'd be very cautious/weary of any surgery. I did my knee out clearing up after rookie builders and my knee was in agony for way over a year. Later I developed plantar fasciitis (right foot first then the left), and that is only just clearing up. But imho, rest and gentle stretches are best, not surgery. Surgery can work, but you have a 50/50 chance of it going wrong too. I can't recommend a good old sports physiotherapist more than the scalpel! Good luck though. It's a bastard for sure, especially if like me, you're pushing 60.
That was a brutal camp, you get worried about the tent, the weather, ticks, get no sleep. But you still think about filming and make a great video. Impressive!
Good tent!, I t’s bombproof! And I was surprised to see ticks at this time of year. Good location though. I was up there at the end of last year doing some low level walking following surgery. Thanks for sharing.
I had to smile at your idea of simple camping compared to the 1970/80s when I was wild camping in the Peaks, Lakes, Alps etc. No contacting the wife by satellite link back then, and karimats were the height of comfort. Love your videos, though. I still camp, but osteoarthritis limits the places I can reach, so I enjoy joining you on trips to some of my old haunts and also many I've never been to.
Not far from my home there, just outside ennerdale, I noticed the ticks are out early again, might be another bad year again for them. I will say they do like to nest in those tufts of long grass which they like to climb up on o they can latch on to things that brush past, so I try avoid them when setting up my gear, but its sods law if you get one I suppose. The tent seemed to hold.up.fairly well anyways.
Great to see you braving the bad and the ugly winds, hardcore 🤜 you did well to last the whole night, hope you had a good sleep when you finally got home safe. Our favourite pot noodles are Curry for my partner Gyles and good ol’ beef and tomato for me 😋 I guess if you don’t weather the storm you never appreciate the glorious days, better luck next time Paul 👍
A friend of mine died as a result of Limes Disease in 2016. I am fastidious in maintaining and proofing my kit. I spray my kit before, during and after use with Permethrin. I seal the tent zips where they meet with a tampon so ticks cannot pass the 2 toggles. I always use a bathtub tent with micro mesh. A good tip is buy a bunch of Dalmatian Chrysanthemum (Giant Daisies) and scatter them around the tent. Ticks hate the chemical they give off.
Years ago I was bitten by a tick in my belly button. I was sick from it for a year. Fortunately no Lyme disease, but I did have some strange things. Heart palpitations. Usually early morning until afternoon. Vomiting often. General feeling of not feeling well.. I am now terrified of ticks.
Old neighbours of ours moved to an 'exclusive' area near Botley Hill, their yougest daughter suffered from a lot of ailments, heart problems, etc. for over a decade. She's only recently been diagnosed with Lymes Disease as the cause, of course they get lots of deer in their garden.
Hiya, I was up Kinder on a camp on Tuesday and found a couple of ticks, 1 decided to be a cling on - good job you had a tent built for them conditions, you would of flown into the lake below in a naturehike 🙂
Nice one Paul, I reckon you had stronger winds than I had in my first night in the Vern 1. Great to see it standing up to even more, shame you did not have the kestrel. Weird though, like, whats he doing in MY tent! Could tell it was not mine though, no
Hi Paul, loving the content buddy. Regarding the fella in the toilets with the fragrances. Yes, you still get them. In some clubs the ladies will be able to straighten their hair in the toilets. Ladies can also buy pumps to walk home in. I got bitten by a tick in Scotland once. I went to my local doctors to inform them and they said ticks don’t exist in the UK. 😂 Didn’t offer any antibiotics or anything, just sent me home and told me to get a grip of myself. I was a lot younger then, I actually pulled the sack of the tick off in panic. I was very worried, but 18 years later, I’m still alive. 😂
Damn ticks. I hate them too. I spray my inner tent around the edges with stuff to keep them away. Also keep up woth my TBE jabs every few years. They are hardy buggers. They can surive into very cold temps unfortunately... Not sure what the solution is. Need to find/develop some kind of predictor form them... Midges and mosquitos I can stand, but creepy little suckers in my underwear no thanks.
Melbreak is one of my favourite walks. I like to go up the scree from the other end. I never seem to see anyone up there. The view across the central ranges on a clear day is absolutely stunning and you can swing by scale force on the descent and then finish with an easy stroll along the length of Crummock. A lovely little walk that I enjoy immensely every time I do it.
Another great video Paul, got to admire your enthusiasm to get out in all weathers. I do like the look of the Nortent, but am struggling to justify adding to the collection of 20 tents I already own 😂 I did think it looked a surprisingly narrow though at the end you had your head at unless that was just the wind bellowing the inner.
Started following recently your channel and I am amazed with your camping adventures. I am new to camping and here in Malta🇲🇹 we are very limited and I never experienced such conditions. Well done for going through all this and sharing all this with us to enjoy and learn.
Hi paul just love your video can't do it any more can still walk a bit but knees shot can't kneel down so camping out plus 77 built like a coopers product so watch you favourite spot in the world crummock water closely followed by buttermere you seem to like most places I do keep up the good work mate I'll keep watching 🙃👍
The ticks would have me on edge more than the wind. 3 pole geodesic should have no problems with that. That might be a spot where deer rested and the ticks jumped onto the bottom or back of your pack attracted to sweat scent. Check bottom of pack after putting it down in damp herbiage. Leaches will also jump on there. Check all gear when you get home - you don't want a colony in your back yard when shaking or drying gear. Always good to wear gaiters and spray them and boots with strong repellent.
So glad your gear didn't fail you. That was definitely a wooly camp that's sure to go down in your journals. I was glad to see that you had your walking pole, they certainly are a good assistant when needed. 🌬⛺🍜💪🤳
A brilliant video Paul👍, especially when you were laughing at the weather.🙂 I skipped through the non talkie parts, for when I'm back at home and can watch it in full.
Looks like the tent performed brilliantly in the wind 👍. Such a great design! Shame about the ticks. Thats never fun to see in the tent. Great video Paul!
OMG, what weather! My heart sank when I saw the intro as I just ordered that tent yesterday along with the PC version! That area of the lakes is deadly. I hoped it was click bait to keep me watching to the end, thank goodness it was! Great video and hope the ticks didn’t bite. Thanks J
Sawyer's Permethrin is your friend...I always treat my hiking clothes regularly. The protection lasts through around 5 - 6 washes before the clothing needs retreating. I also treat external surfaces on my backpack. Grassy areas like you're in will be good habitat for Ticks. When you spot one like that, if you can't just flick it out...could carry a small roll of masking tape in the pocket...just take a piece of tape and dab the tick and should stick to it, then can fold it up trapping it for disposal. Also...two words...Ear Plugs...I carry a pair in my backpack, and greatly helps with tent flapping in wind or rain noise during the night.
very much enjoyed the video ticks aside, a beast of a tent, it didn't budge little or no pole distortion. given the conditions its good to know the tent will stand up to whatever's chucked at it.
I don't think I've tried the latest flavours of Pot Noodle, but for 40 years, my favourite has been the chicken and mushroom, with a buttered muffin to dip in!
haha love this comment. Was literally comparing that tent or style of tent vs just getting a true 4 season tent for winter (ft of snow type of winter camping). Everyone kept talking up that durstin tent like it was invincible..... I settled on a true 4 season tent. I want something I can depend on if it gets hairy and that durston is a great tent, but not 4 season bomb proof good.
Well done for seeing that through! Looks like a great tent. That looked like one of those mornings where a full English breakfast is required! Great video. 😀
Great video mate! Laughing at the bit about the gents toilets and the guys selling toilet paper, Armani/old spice or lollipops to you… can confirm it still happens when I occasionally go out to pubs in Edinburgh there are still some establishments with these legends in them 😂👍
For camping I’ve always stuck to a 55 litre and never ever gone over that rule it’s lasted 46 years ;; Paul don’t forget to check for any red rings around a bite on your body just in case
I got bit by a tick in 2014. I contracted Lyme disease and co infection bacteria.Stole my health,my money,my career (mason/bricklayer) Still infected to this day. Now work a security job because my health is kaput. Red rash or bullseye ring not always present. Lyme disease CANNOT be cured.
Meal wise, I recently used the Idahon instant mash, couple of spoons of Bistow in a container and some cook meat. I found it a lot more filling than some of the dehydrated meals I've used over the years and would recommend giving it a go
Haha that was a bit of a baptism of fire for that tent. Didn’t budge much 👍🏼 I know Nortent say you don’t really need to seam seal it, but did you bother doing it anyway? I’m also itching, watching on my sofa 😫 Cheers, Gary B
Hi Paul have been following your channel for a few years and we think this was perhaps the craziest weather you’ve camped in. Hope you enjoyed a good breakfast and brew once you got back to Buttermere. Those paths out of Buttermere have been a real challenge with all the wet weather and subsequent flooding. We were there in mid September and filmed our route to Scale Force and the flooding was terrible we nearly turned back and then almost didn’t make it back! Check out our video ‘the highest waterfall in the Lake District - Scale Force’ to see what it was like back then. By the way we have always been inspired by your camping and still (even in our retired years) hope to get out and give it a go.
Glad the tent held out for you Paul Baltic conditions looks a decent tent tho. Favourite spot of mine opposite your view rannerdale knot going back to lucky lucky men the 90s was the time we had them lurking in toilets good to see you out again 👍🏻
Just like you Paul, I've found that guy tensioners slip in high winds. I now run the guylines out to their full extent so there's nothing to slip and nothing to get out of my sleeping for 👍
The tent held good, there Paul. So important when in doubt to get out in the cold and wind and double check the guy lines, even for the sake of peace of mind!
Paul I live in Mansfield (Harlow Wood) and I’ve got 3 sons and they tell me the guys in the toilets are still there - “No Calvin Klein no sexy time” and my favourite - “No Dolce and Gabbana, no suck on your banana” hilarious, I think they call him the sucky sucky man but I might be wrong 🤣 it’s crazy it’s still going.
That Eric Cantona performance was so shockingly bad. I really weird booking for prime time Saturday night TV. I thought the genuine music act must have called in sick.
Great demonstration of grace under fire! I'm right there with you on ticks, have been bitten twice here in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, we are having quite the infestation due to the wild Winter just passed. Looking forward to your next trip, after you finish off your month of daily postings. Take care Paul and thank you.
Was last up in Buttermere for the Northern Lights - stood in the middle of the junction you parked at staring up at the sky. Was an amazing night - Buttermere is probably my favourite spot in the lakes 😉👍
Hi Paul hopefully you can help me, me and a couple friends were going to camp Buttermere but the weather is horrendous so I've talked them into peaks. still going to be windy but do you know any spots to pitch around kinder scout? thanks and all the best.
Great video Paul watched your mate yesterday Andy, and you today ,made me look at the weather for Yorkshire coast tomorrow I’m off,ps were you sitting on a footprint?
Ticks, wind, rain and then I went off see Eric. All I can say is you need to Mr C camping and feed him pot noodle and a bit of an animal. Both of you are bonkers
Ye, Ticks are not nice, imagine my horror years ago when getting in the shower after walking through the woods at a Centre Parks only to discover what looked like either two antenas or two legs sticking out of the end of my togger and I mean right close to where you relieve yourself... not nice. I also had one on my knee area. Had to go and see the on-site nurse which was quite embarrasing.
I use the same tip for the pot noodle with the Quaker porridge pots. I transfer the contents to a zip lock bag and write on the bag with a sharpie pen for the amount of water.
