Great work. Only one thing to point out. I always avoid to hinge the angled door on the shorter side. The long corner tends to stick out. You have that on the build. Not a lot but it happens. Love this under stairs builds.
You can't beat bespoke carpentry! Excellent work Robin, I had very similar done 11 years ago by a great carpenter. Still need to put the shelves in 😂😂😂
Exactly how I have done them for many a years, used your recommended cladding company through your submit form. Michael is a lovely person, great communication `& a beautiful product, as using western cedar. I did not want to just purchase it from anywhere & wanted it all pre finished, as there is 180 sq metres of it & all with no joins on my project on a beautiful home.
Top tier work as always Robin. Im saving up for a plunge saw next, i have the rail compatible circular saw from Dewalt and its super useful but dust extraction is poor and its a bit clumsy sometimes working around the non retractable blade.
Maybe a bit of a silly question, but as a complete novice, how are you joining the different bits of the frame together? What type of joint if being used?
Love your content, Robin. I’m hoping to tackle new bannisters and under stairs draws / cupboards soon. I’m already nervous, as I’ve never done either! Was the oak veneered MDF from cut wrights?
I'm always pricing these kinds of jobs. Under stair storage, wardrobes etc Unfortunately, I find that many clients want them but don't want to pay the money or understand the craftsmanship required. What would you be charging for this job?
Great job Robin. Can I ask where you purchased the hinges? I've been looking for gunmetal coloured ones recently for a living room build I'm doing. I've been using a Kreg hinge jig for years for bits I've done around the house, great bit of kit, as it their pocket hole jig for certain applications. Thanks.
Solid work!! Does anybody in the UK have a good source for veneered MdF. I seem to only be able to find suppliers for bulk products, not just 1 or 2 sheets
The problem with Oak Veneered MDF with iron on edging is it so easily damaged and a lot of Oak MDF don't like being oiled as the oil de-laminates the veneers from the MDF. They look nice though. Have you tried Grass soft close Hinges Robin?. I think they're better than Blum hinges. All the best Adrian.
Iv made cabinets out of oak faced mdf a few times now turns out lovely i glue 10mm of solid oak on the face which is nice and solid then router a small chamfer on too.
Funny how no one ever compares Hilti stuff in their videos. It was all i used when i was on the big sites. Still got a few of their sds drills and lasers 25 years old and still better than snything else.
@@firsteerr I got one from.the 80s too and its still better than my new makita. I still got a few drywall guns, a jigsaw, a Dx450, a TE17 a laser, all working perfectly.
Robin, Super to see your talents again, & great to see you putting that Hilti to use! I use the same Blum hinges, with similar jigs. Wondering why you don't add a roller stand to your table saw set-up, although I flip the pieces just like you to keep my hands far away from blade clever minds think alike. Furthermore, you could use the stand to support that shaky hinge-bore drilling at minute ten & the mallet hammering @13. Beautiful result.
Excellent video and explanation. Whats your thoughts on using oak veneered mdf compared to birch plywood? Are there significant differences be between cost, weight and stability? I'm only a hobbist diy/woodworker and just starting out but really got the bug now. Information like this and your videos really help. Thanks for sharing.
If you're using veneered sheet goods, then you're probably best going cheapest, which will likely always be MDF. Birch plywood is, obviously (!), birch, so it's a different product to Oak veneer. You could have Oak veneered plywood of course, but you'd only really do that if you're concerned about MDF itself, perhaps because of VOCs or inhalation of dust when cutting etc. I prefer hand tools, so would use softwood with the occasional bit of plywood. As a DIYr, you've got that room to decide which material you prefer for whatever reason suits you, because time and budget are less of a consideration than if you're quoting for a customer.
Uncanny - I'm making an understairs cupboard this week, just fitted a balau (hardwood) door frame. As a non-carpenter it took me about 10 tries and a lot of swearing, but I did insist on perfect mitres which itself was ... er, fun. Anyway hilarious - I'm having a pair of doors, a single door, then a fixed panel!!!
Great work as always Robin, would really appreciate a video to show the detail on how the frame is all fixed together as I'm struggling with my DIY job at home lol
This was luckily timed - I'm in the middle of doing exactly that job, making custom door for an under-stair cupboard, and that hinge jig will save me time and head-banging for sure. Thanks! My door fitting still won't look as beautiful as yours but I'm usually not too scruffy as DIY nuts go 🙂
Crossing over into bespoke joinery there Robin. Don't think I've ever seen you do this sort of work before. I like the tactile way you're using the hand screwdriver and block plane. And obviously the grain matching was my favourite part 😂.. As others have sadi, you do make it look super easy and the result is splendid as always.
Great work Robin, you are a true craftsman with a very keen eye for detail. I notice you used a block plane to trim the excess veneer edging. I have done a lot of this work, and I always use a file that cuts on the edge as well as the face. It's very controllable and no chance of damaging the face veneer. Keep up the great work!
Love how you have some amazing top notch tools, then juxtaposed with a shitty old tape and kreg jig. 😁 If I was a nicer guy I'd sling you a class 1 Tajima tape in the post... but I'm not so I wont🤣
I have had Tajima tapes and they are lovely, I find the best tape for my site and internal work is the Stabila that I am using here its a BM300 and it has lasted me 2 years this is a record for me!!!! see this link amzn.to/4ai36H8
@@ukconstruction I'll have a look. I'm a bit of a Japanophile and love Tajima stuff. Fortunately I'm not on site any more. Tending towards high end interiors now and often wear carpet slippers 😁
