Someone did a video comparing Ringo Starr's drumming which in itself was "simple" but how he knew exactly how to make it fit the song vs complexity and how it can take away from it. Knowing the difference is what makes a good drummer great.

I've always felt that simple vs complexity comes down to what the song is intended to do. If it's intended to just make you want to move, simplicity is where it's at. I mean, just a basic four on the floor beat works wonders in just making someone tap their foot, or bob their head, or move in any way. I guess that's why pop music tends to be simple, it's just meant to dance to. But music that is meant to be *listened* to is when you want complexity. The music that makes you have to think about what you're hearing. Neither is inherently worse than the other, they just have different applications. Obviously, it's possible to combine these with the right mind set / skill, but just as a generalization.

Exactly. There are always parts where what the guitarist is doing is more important than what the drummer is doing. Each person knowing when they should come in with something more complex or simple is what makes or breaks a band's sound. If every one is just doing super complex, highly technical stuff all at once, it's hard to pay attention to what's going on, which ultimately detracts from the overall sound of the song.

Versatility and the proper use of both “simple” and “complex styles I think is what’s most important. Some of Jared’s style at the right moments absolutely drove the rhythm and made it sound so much tighter and connected, while Brooks complexity during fills or transitions played into the melody and rhythms of the guitar and made the song sound so much more technically advanced

Somewhere right in the middle, flair is good in moderation and it makes things interesting , but too much can take away from that essential rhythmic foundation. The simple drumming had a very easily identifiable pulse, but it can get boring pretty quick. A combination of the two would be interesting while still retaining utility.

@@compulsive_curiosity Of course, but this part stood out as a perfect example of what complexity coupled with great musicality can achieve, even taken out of context and just heard on its own, this part still shines as an incredible and mature musical statement. Obviously this section is creating tension that will be resolved with the drop, Brooks understands that and enhanced the tension to its absolutely highest point before the 'drop', the drop wouldn't feel so good if the tension part wasn't so expertly done (and vice versa as you state), so both parts are working together.
