Very helpful! If you like working with dry paint, why do you opt for letting tube paint go dry rather that using the pan paints?

Hi Jenna. I LOVE your videos. I wanted to share a trick that worked great for me when I first set up my pallet. In order to get rid of the smooth coating on my plastic I used a baking soda and water paste. I lightly scrubbed my whole pallet including the paint wells and dried it thoroughly with paper towels. I hit it with the hair dryer for just a minute to make sure there was no moisture anywhere and then put my paints in. It worked like a charm.💖

It's quite interesting to see how people are setting up their palettes. I was setting up mine: black (or paynes grey), earth tones and then the rainbow order starting with yellow. I washed my palette with soal and used a magic eraser to prep. (I don't have any glue sticks anymore and this was the only option I had.)

I don't normally comment, but thank you so much for the glue stick trick! It was beading so bad and it made me not want to use it. Plus some of the paint was just dropping out of the wells! I did the gluestick trick and cleaned the palette out and it worked perfectly!

I like to pre-prep my palettes (plastic and enamel coated metal) by scuffing them with #0000 steel wool, rinse the dust off then use a disposable eraser cleaning pad on them. The eraser helps remove any oils from the surface. When finished, what I have is a dull satin finish on the surface. I do this in both the paint wells and mixing trays.

Re: paint beading up on a new palette - I tried using a fingernail buffer and it seems to have worked well. It was a cushy file that feels velvety smooth, not gritty like sandpaper. The different brands would call it different things, so I don't want to give specifics. I tried it first on the little area near the thumb hole that Jenna shows - I figured that I probably wouldn't use that for mixing much, so if I ruined it, no loss. It worked, so I lightly buffed all the mixing wells. Hope this tip can help someone! I love this channel! I'm new to watercolors and learning so much! Jenna's color sense is a lot similar to mine. :-)

Hi I’m just getting into water colour painting and am loving all the clear instructions that you are giving us. I have 1 question about this video. You say that you don’t really like the purple and that you don’t really use it. So it begs the question, why have you included it in your pallet? Thanks again, I’ve learned a lot !!!
@JennaRaineyChannel

Hey Ann, I'm so glad you're loving the tutorials! Although it's my least favorite color, I still recognize I need to use it sometimes. Some paintings may just need a touch of purple. Also, I do a lot of product designs for different companies and I have to follow color palettes they provide (which may include purple).

Make a paste out of baking soda and water lightly scrub your pallet and paint making sure to get the corners. Rinse well and dry with a paper towel. I hit it with my blow dryer after just to make sure there was no residual moisture. This will remove the shiny finish thus allowing our paint to adhere to your pallets.🥰

Oohhh my word, I'm so glad I decided to read the comments and haven't filled my new palette, yet! As always, I had buffed the mixing wells of my new plastic palette (it's exactly like Jenna's old one in this video with the 24 wells), but I didn't buff the paint wells (I'm finally making a "permanent" travel palette after 3 years of working out of welled mixing palettes w/ little dollops of what ever paint I needed for the piece). I don't care too terribly much if the "globs" of paint fall out *if* the entire palette is dry (though, a pain to reorganize!), but I'm glad to know there's a way to keep those dried paints in the wells when I've wet other paints and need to pick up and go. I know I could clean a wet color off the dried "globs," but not easily like cakes of pigment, and I don't want to lose any precious paint! Whew. Near-miss! 🥰

good video :-). I'm a little confused about the order of the colors. The order you wanted to do is roy g biv. Why is scarlet red on the outside and not exchanged for opera rose? The scarlet is more of a red than opera rose and could therefore be better placed next to orange than opera rose. Why is the turquoise between violet and cerulean? it would be more logical for me if it were between Prussian blue and permanent sap green, because it would be the greenest blue in your palette and fit better between these two colors than between violet and cerulean.

Hey! If you are referring to the 7th dish down in my well-used palatte (the kind of brighter blue), that's phthalo turqoise. I know that does NOT look like it, but it is a very old paint that I put in my palette long ago and W&N no longer makes it this light. I am currently testing out Manganese Blue (which you can actually see in the night sky video -- it's one of the last blues I use in the sky, before I paint the trees) as a supplement. I hope this clears it up! 😊

So I finally got my pallet and colors you suggested. I was SO excited. I put my colors in just like you said in this video. I felt so accomplished, And then ..... I realized I forgot to do the glue stick 🤦‍♀️ can I still do it with the paint already in the pans? Also, when the paint is dry is it like rock hard or hard but a tiny bit squishy? I'm a total newbie so idk this stuff. I'm dying to play but trying to wait on it all to dry.
@JennaRaineyChannel
@JennaRaineyChannel 3 года назад
Hey Crystal, you'll be totally fine! I never use the glue stick technique, personally. I know it works so I shared that in the video, but I break in my palette the good old fashioned way -- just by using it! Haha. Keep painting and mixing paints around, and it should break it just fine. Also, yes, the paint will dry pretty hard. You don't HAVE to wait for it to dry -- it just helps it last longer because when you use the paint wet, you'll tend to grab more than you need. When you activate the dried paint with water, you take less on your brush.

This video was extremely helpful. Thank you. I have issues with the beading AFTER I prepped the wells with a glue stick on each mixing well. This is frustrating because I certainly don't know what to do to alleviate this problem. Does this not work if the glue stick is too old?

So glad this was helpful! Not sure about an old glue stick, but as long as it still had normal glue stick qualities, I think it’d be fine!

Jenna , what color is the light blue in your palette. You didn’t mention it. It’s in your larger palette 🎨 Think you have two wells of it ? It’s a pretty color. Thx for all you info. So grateful 😍

It’s next to the two yellows. Such a pretty greenish blue ?

Could you please tell us what colors you would use since you switched from Windsor Newton to MamieriBLU to make a comparable palette?

Hi Jeena, I am a big admirer of you. I did follow your order of filling the pallette but mine doesn't haveva cover. Is that ok. Please let me know so I can go ahead and fill my pallette and get ready. Take care of yourself and Myles and John.

Hello! How do you keep the colors from “popping out” when you open and close the palate? Some of my colors don’t stay out once they dry?

Perhaps there's an earlier comment, but I'll ask anyway. How do I remember the paint colors (names) as time goes by especially when you tossed out the tube.

I’ve done it once and it worked for me! I’ve been using the same palette now for a long time, so I don’t set up new ones often at all...

Thank you! I wondered if the glue could change any pigment texture, or hatte happens with the brushes :) But then I will try this soon!

Not a palette question, a paint question. I was silly and bought my Prussian blue in a pan. It is set so hard I can barely get it to reset the colour is so weak and the little bit I could get going had flakes in the pigment. Any tips to reset a stubborn colour?

Hi! Do you have any references to what all the colors are in your larger palette? Thanks in advance!

Hey Kevin! They're all the same colors that I talked about in this video, just a variety of different mixes together. There are two greens in my palette from a long time ago that I don't use anymore (Olive Green and Winsor Green) and there is one NEW color that I started using after this palette video, that's Manganese Blue: amzn.to/3sqOcsc -- hope that helps!
