I have four boys and when they turned 10 I stopped doing their laundry. Each boy had a different day and it was such a relief to me to get that off my plate. When my oldest (now 30) went to college he had 3 male roommates. My son had to teach a couple of them how to do laundry because they were never expected or had to do it when they lived at home. Our children need to learn these life skills.

I did the same thing with my boys but my criteria was when they could reach the bottom of the washer. Exceptions were made during exam weeks, etc. but they are both full partners with their wives in keeping their homes clean and everything done including cooking too.

When we turned 10 we each(4of us) got our own hamper and taught how to do laundry. 1 time my dad tried to be helpful, I was 13, as my hamper was in line for next, but my mom had done a bleach load before..... turned expensive for them cause like all my clothes got ruined.

I (also) stopped separating laundry about 5 years ago, unless something is brand new, and it instantly simplified things - I haven't had any issues at all with colors bleeding or damaging things. It's made laundry soooo much more manageable to toss everything in together and quickly sort it as it comes out of the dryer!! Loved starting my morning with you catching up on emails and and drinking tea :)

I don't think I've ever sorted my laundry and, yes, everything comes out just fine! Also, a load is a load - I do not separate towels from clothes, etc. When I mop my floor (gross! lol!) I fill a sink and add a teaspoon or so of bleach to the water. I give it a good swish and then rinse it out, wring it out, and toss it in with the rest of the laundry (all germs and smells are sanitized in the bleach!)

I like that you have a system that works for YOU! One way you might consider simplifying is combining more loads. I personally combined all materials and colors, unless there is something new that could bleed on something lighter. Most fabrics today are safe from bleeding. Less loads if combining if that make sense! They also make Color Catchers that can stop any bleeding of dyes.

Thanks erica -❤ best thing i did was stop buying white things the very moment we got past school uniform pieces that were white 🎉 (schools could make a big impact removing whites from uniform lists !) we gifted all of our white things and replaced them with pastel colours - no white towells - wow it has taken a lot of hassle out of laundry as no whites wash - pastel sheets and shirts look just as fresh and smart - plus we feel better about not encouraging bleach water waste from our own home but also in to the waterways in countries where garments are produced 🌍💚

My boys are old…er now but when they were in elementary school they did their own laundry too. My one son would iron a particular t shirt before he wore it. It was very interesting to watch this every time. I don’t know what it was about that particular shirt but he was happy to do it.

I really like the "one person per day" laundry system. It really helps to de-stream the chaos, while making sure everyone once a week gets their laundry needs met. Also, I really like that your kids are "in training" early with respect of doing their own laundry. Give that training another 6 months, and all of the kids will be doing their own laundry, which will save you a whole lot of time! That being said, treat yourself to a little door hanging "white" laundry bag. You've earned it, Mom! 💜

People separate their laundry? 🤔 Why? Lol. It all gets clean either way and colours don’t bleed. If they do, get rid of the offender.
@davettepittman525
@davettepittman525 Год назад
If sorting clothes at their stage in life is difficult and causes you more work, do they have to separate them? If it doesn’t matter to you, they can lump all their clothes in one drawer, if it will hold them until they are older, and feel the need for separating their laundry. We feel the need to separate our laundry because our dressers have more than one drawer. It makes logical sense to the adult mind to put one category of clothing in each drawer. But you don’t have to play that game if you don’t want to. You can also use a marker that won’t bleed and label everything somewhere inconspicuously where they know to look (like where a tag usually is) with a U for under clothes, a P for pajamas and some other letter for the other clothes, and put the letter that matches it on their drawers.

I like your list of what needs to be done every day. It is like a brain dump for laundry so you don’t have to remember everything that needs washing. It automates the process so that everyone in the family knows when their laundry is going to get done. Since you are in there every day, maybe look at some wall or shelving decorations to add something beautiful or inspiring for you. You had a lot of pictures in the basement at one point. Just because it is a utility room doesn’t mean it can’t be pretty too. Thanks for sharing your routines. I am doing laundry today as well. I hang wet laundry overnight and in the morning fold and put it away.

Love these tips, as well as, how honest & real you are!! We are a farm family of 4, plus 3 dogs (I know-I’m a glutton for punishment 😅). I do one load a day & don’t separate by colors. I do however separate out socks & dog blankets/bedding though. The only days I do more than one load are on Thursdays or Fridays when I wash all our bedding. I use powdered laundry detergent because it’s the only thing that I’ve found that doesn’t leave a gunky build up or smell in our front load washer; I use vinegar as a deodorizer, softener & disinfectant; I use Shout for stains. I use dryer balls in the dryer. And that’s it. I know laundry is a tricky household chore for many people but this system works for us. I love how you have your kiddos helping w their laundry too! I’m going to start implementing this in February! 🎉❤

Could you perhaps use that attractive wicker basket you were going to donate to ‘drop’ your whites into as you do your sorting processes? I’m not sure how big it is and if would hold all your whites as they collect? (I think your machines in the US are bigger than ours in the uk) I was thinking it would be easy to grab and upend into your washer on laundry day then? Thank you for sharing. I also minimised my kids clothes and then ‘couldn’t keep up’ with the washing resulting in some stressful days with no school uniform or underwear clean! Surprisingly, the cause for me was the dedicated day of washing for each person. Despite having 10days + of clothes, my boys would get changed, or get muddy, spill stuff or just decide to get changed! So I find a load a day works better for us- everyone has at least one pair of clean underwear that way at least (but boy do I hate sorting the washing!) x

Hi friend! A couple suggestions, maybe check with your laundry company about the pods, I thought pods go in the drum not the little gray, but maybe not :). Also totally agree is it worth buying a whites basket, nope! But I wonder if they get musty? Maybe a breathable basket or something would keep them a bit more airy? Oh and the spiders and scorpions here in Texas always love the bottom of a laundry pile on the floor! Glad you don’t have that problem!🤗❤️

I have heard an old saying "If it ain't broke, there's no need to fix it." Your whites behind the door work for you. I wash everything in cold water - works for me as nothing gets really dirty and my hubby & I wear very few whites - and it would take forever for his white handkerchiefs to make a full load. I simplified our laundry area last week and I, too, removed almost everything from the top shelf that I can't reach.

I taught my kids how to do laundry around the age of 10ish. They always helped, but, showed them how to actually use the washer and dryer around that age. I also had a deal with them, if they put their laundry in the laundry room, I'd do it with the family laundry. If they didn't it was their responsibility. I didn't chase dirty clothes.

I have 5 kids we have a small fabric bin from dollar tree for each person and all our clothes fit on the bins. We homeschool we don't need tons of clothes, and minimizing clothes has changed my life

why don't you use the brown basket you just freed up for your whites? You already have that, it costs nothing and looks better! 🙂

I am watching you in the evening, so I am resting 🙂 I would encourage you to combine darks and colours together and save on a few loads a week.

I use a container exactly like your pod container except that I use detergent sheets. I keep them in the envelopes, open one at a time, and put it in the front, turned backwards so that I only have one open. I buy a year’s worth at a time to save money.

Glad to hear that I’m not the only one who changes sheets every two weeks instead of every week. I do change pillowcases every week. Donna

😂 I live in New Zealand and I had no idea that there were things called dryer balls or that they were made from New Zealand wool and sold overseas 🤦‍♀

I taught my children their life skills from they were toddlers, firstly by helping me then doing small things themselves. It's a parents job to teach their kids how to look after themselves NOT wait on them hand and foot!
