Just a guess but I do believe that the colors and the bars in yusician actually work and here is why: They are trying to build your muscle memory but they do know that this is done differently for each person. So they added the colored sheet(which I use) and the colored bars. At some point I thought that maybe this is going to affect me just like you did so I switched to sheet music and I was surprised to see that after I got rid of my panic I actually played it normally this is because when I see a note automatically my brain loads the color that is supposed to be there and in return I play the designated key. Not sure if this works for everyone but they did consider that ergonomics is based on the fact that people are different.

I think that's only true when you have played the song several times to the point that you've already built up the muscle memory for that particular song, so when you switch to the uncoloured sheet notation, it doesn't really matter because your muscle memorises it. For me, when I tried using the uncoloured sheet notation for the first time of playing the song, I felt completely lost. I know I can play only if I dissect each and every note slowly by making sense of where to put my fingers as they should, but for me that takes so much time so I guess I just took the convenient road. I know it's bad, because as of now I'm relying on the colours too much to the point that I cannot read as I play like every pianist supposed to. But it's super useful, especially when you reach higher levels (I'm currently at level 7) where the finger positions move around a lot. For me personally, my target of using this app is to develop basic fundamental skills like building dexterity, getting myself used to playing simultaneously with both hands, and getting used to how to press piano notes and stuff. I think Yousician is a great place to start for a beginner until we finally develop some skills to experiment or do some more research on our own.

I've been using Yousician for several months now (I honestly don't remember the first time I started) and overall I think it's great. Yet, I do have the exact same concern about the coloured sheet notation on Yousician. As of now, I've always been using the coloured sheet notation because for me it makes the learning process easier, as I don't have to dissect each note one by one (since I'm not used to reading music score yet). This is a double-edge sword I believe. I have to say it is super useful especially when you go to higher levels where the finger positions move around a lot, and it gives me some kind of "piano-playing-finger-position" technique where I have to put my fingers and which finger should press on the note. But then, as I mentioned earlier, the convenience makes me have little to no progress in reading the (uncoloured) music score on my own and I'm not getting used to reading it as I play, which sucks I believe. But for starters, especially those who want to get a grasp of some "basic piano playing skills" such as dexterity in pressing down the notes, playing simultaneously with both hands, and getting familiar to the piano, I believe it is a great place to start as it can take you somewhere farther when you've reached a certain level that you feel confident that you can start your own journey by doing your own research and experiment by yourself.

I used yousician for guitar gor three months now and am level 5. For guitar, the colourd are there to show what finger is best used to fret the note. It helps with chords very much, because some chords simply cant be played otherwise but for easy chords, it tells you that you dont need to use that finger for a certain string. I will start my piano journey Wednesday when my piano arrives, i sprung for a good one this time since the last time i tried i got a crappy keyboard that sounded awful and had half weighted keys, which i hate. This time, i got one with hammer replica. I hope the app (since i already payed for it for guitar and thus is free for piano for me) will continue to be great For guitar, you have the option to go back to the songs you already played and compare. It was shocking how easy a song is that i thought was hard af 2 months ago. Especially moving my finger more than one fret away while coordinating my plucking hand

I use yousician and the color notation is really useful to see which finger you should play a note with, not all the C's are green, only the ones you play with the No. 1 finger.

I have to say, the layout and being able to see what you're going to learn and play with Yousician is better. However, I prefer the step by step learning that SimplyPiano has. Maybe Yousician will have it one day. I still use both, they are good to use in tandem.

Tired both. But ended up going with simply piano. I think their learning structure was more superior. Nice progression. And made sense as I built up. Also, I like that it’s just black keys yet they help with labeling keys with the letter and sometimes number for finger. So far I’ve learned more how to read music with simply piano. Plenty I don’t like. Or shall I say. Prefer yousician. I like the look of yousician, I like the background tracks. I like the other features. Looping and things. But I spent a month on it. And the lessons just didn’t seem as thought out. And I find the celebration sounds and interruption when you complete a section, song, portion and or song to be annoying and take me away from piano. Simply has some but not nearly as much. I wish I could have a mix of the two. But I’ve learned a TON on simply in a shorter period than yousician. And those colors a nice. But they did end up being a crutch. Trying to play sheet music got my lost. But playing sheet music now after simply (new song, not a repeat or something) and I’ve actually learned the keys and chords. Testing both for a month. I’m sticking with simply. But loved the features of youcician. If only youcician and simply had a baby

I was using yousician for a while and started a music course since, which requires you to read sheet music and got stuck. I actually switched to the 7 day free trial of simply piano from yousician as I found simple piano teaches you sheet music / notation much better and has a better progression in teaching you new notes intervals and chords. Yousician kind of expects you to be able to know sheet music already. Within one evening session of simply piano I began to play intervals and chords sight read using both hands, and now I can read the notes and play the sheet music from the course much better. If I had my time back I would have went with simply piano.

Appreciate this honest comparison, I can see the value in the loop practice and metronome option youmusician has, but I like how simple piano offers family plans so I and my son together can practice on one paid account. 1) Does yousician allow multiple profiles in a single account? 2) Which one do you think is would appeal more to my never-played-a-piano 8 yr old son who isn't allowed to play video games right now but is really attracted to video games? Hey there Piano girl here. I am roughly self taught about 30 years and learned bass cleff to play songs like JUMP VanHalen and Hill St. Blues theme and to build my classic piano skills. I started on a multi-level keyboard when I was so young I can't remember almost. I am also a METAL genre guitarist taking lessons professionally for 6 and half years, my main band being IRON MAIDEN being my main inspiration for guitar yet recently more 80s metal bands and Avril Lavigne being my newer inspirations. Playing guitar since 1999. I just ordered my newest keyboard a Yamaha PSR-SX600 my first really serious keyboard. I did order a full years subscription to Simply Piano. I recently from sheet music the MacGyver theme song from the original TV series with left and right hand. My new keyboard will allow me more advanced auto accompaniment with cues from my right hand and I believe my left hand playing bass clef yet I did start using one finger chords, then graduated to actually playing the 1st 3rd and 5th if major the 1st flatted 3rd and 5th if minor chord and so on. For over 2 and a half decades I played full key chords with my left hand and within last 10 years actually forcing myself to read bass clef sheet music and trying to take my foundations in piano and hope to take my self taught playing to a more authentic level. I have considered the piano by yousician based on your review. I find Simply piano doesn't have good recognition and I have good timing yet it tells me I don't in Simply piano. The app seems rudimentary considering my skills but I thought even going back to basics probably doesn't hurt. I still would appreciate if you could share what you prefer based on my musical background. I thought it would be cool to have a structured review to beef up my piano techniques and skills and with my new workstation on its way I really would like to know your insight to what I should do... My year subscription for Simply piano ends on June 23rd. I am heavily debating whether to renew but if yousician offers more modern pieces of music like say some of Avril Lavignes piano music or some TV theme music from yousician then please share if this is even worthwhile to invest in. I can read sheet music fine yet I am also a fan of this integrative technology which helps teach you these musical skills so any help you can share with me this lady would humbly appreciate it. I want to get into playing video game music too as I have the sheet music I paid for for example the legend of Zelda theme as an example. Thanks for your time and sharing of your insights.

Thanks for your views. It helped me decide which to get for my granddaughter for Christmas. I think Simply Piano is right for her. I prefer use the regular sheet music and not the colored notes. As for a lack of a tempo, the keyboard has a metronome that can be uses. As for looping, although a great idea, it can still be done on the ipad by stopping and moving it back to the problem area, so it's not impossible. Thanks again. Decision made.

I started with Simply Piano, and now that I have heard about Piano Sessions, I was wondering if going for Yousician as my second app or Piano Sessions. Yousician is more fun to play and I like the immediate feedback, but I notice I'm trying to match colors more than thinking about where the notes are and what they are....simply piano teaches C,D,E slowly and show you how the note looks and where they are. I like that. I really wish there was a mix of these two apps. Feels less satisfying playing songs on it for me though.
@jureeze140
@jureeze140 4 года назад
I have tried Yousician and even Flowkey for now. The bottom line will always remain that you require an app that teaches you interactively about music learning along with teaching how to read the sheet music. One might always find videos of songs and how it is being played but more reliable and available are always music sheets to be read. And I believe simply piano teaches how to play the piano but its mostly the way on how you read the notes in front of you. Yousician gives you formats of notations to switch between (apart from other good things) but once you shift to the easy format of the alphabets in it to learn quickly, you will never be able to actually read a sheet music (a difficulty which I am facing heavily right now) just in case one popped in front of you. You do improve your ear training but that can be achieved by consistent practice on Simply Piano too. Flowkey on the other hand focuses directly on songs but there is no step by step process wherein you would feel that you have also learnt reading music sheets along the way. apart from the Number of clicks that is being made from listening to learning and so on and on. Therefore I feel that the progress you gain through simply piano can be used in any situation because as you practice you know to read notes, you automatically ear train with experience and your feel of the piano is overall better, but the same need not specifically apply for the other apps though they are well structured. If anyone has any suggestions do let me know Edit: I have to share another experience I.e. Simply Piano is something that I would prefer more over anything else with an app design. There is always going to be another issue that you will face for example i.e. for one song like Mary Had a Little Lamb, it frankly would have tons of sheet music versions for itself too. Sometimes a certain note is played whole in one sheet but it may not be true for another. In such situations you do master sheet reading slowly and gradually but if one really wants to get into the depth of knowing music then I would say that the method to follow for learning would be Chords progressions and improvisations(while gradually learning how to incorporate playing melody into it too). Therefore Tim Gross as an online teacher for piano appears more appealing. His monthly modules are tough in the beginning but once you stick through his lessons and practice you start loving it. However I will still learn sheet music reading because it is always helpful when I need to learn classical pieces and a little extra knowledge doesn't harm anyone, but total dependancy on sheet music as a learning method towards piano is something I personally wouldn't recommend. Further edit: I got tired of the music theory again and again though it might be good for the long run. I am with flowkey on a yearly basis since Oct 2020 and it has been a blast. The key to succeed in flowkey is just being self motivated without any external feedback. If you can just do it as you would do a chore for an hour or two, it's boring during the first few days but then when you master the songs and your fingers move on the instrument so smooth in a week you start feeling more confident and in love it it. If you can self motivate. Flowkey = best

I am sorry that you are struggling with music sheets.Thank you soooo much for posting this comment and your opinion!!!You helped me decide and by thinking the cons and pros from my perspective I reached to the conclusion that simply piano is the best fit for me.I really love their app design and I want to learn both sheet music and how to play songs.As simply piano is divided in the two groups soloist and thd pop chord course and because I want to learn how to play both pop and clssical musc does that mean that for instance once I finish the pop chord branch I can then go and learn the classical one?

Whereas Flowkey and Skoove show both but for me personally the Flowkey app is suitable. However, I still make it a point to practice reading 3 sheets of music everyday and in any case whatsoever none of these apps can ever tell you where you actually stand in terms of progress. There just isn't any I could find. I know I can find lyrics later but they aren't there in the software when I am learning a song provided in the teaching software. Thanks for all your replies!

I will probably end up getting Yousician, simply because I play piano, guitar and bass (equally bad) and the premium + option gives access to all instruments under the same subscription.

Interesting stuff. One question:Maybe I'm thinking of a completely different range of programs, but do either of these "listen" to how you are playing the material presented? Say, listening to what you play (with varying levels of reliability) via the mic, or even making use of a midi interface to a keyboard - as a means of checking out how you are going with lessons.
@CharlesCleyn
@CharlesCleyn 4 года назад
If you're speaking of the velocity of notes being played, no, unfortunately, I haven't noticed any of the apps do this yet which is too bad since how hard you hit the keys is a big part about playing piano

Lovely video content! Apologies for butting in, I am interested in your thoughts. Have you ever tried - Renndrew Volleyball Victimless (google it)? It is a great one of a kind guide for uncovering the simple trick to master the piano minus the headache. Ive heard some great things about it and my work colleague after a lifetime of fighting got amazing success with it.

I am curious, your review of these three have stood up to time, meaning, have any of the three implemented features another had. And I am also very curious how the song list compares among each of the 3. I only downloaded flowkey for example and while their song list had a lot of the songs I wanted to learn in it, tutorials werent available at all difficulty levels. I think there were 4 difficulty levels and most songs only supported 1 or 2 levels. It would be nice if there was a website that listed all of the songs and how many levels are supported for each of the apps to get a better idea, since they are so similar in features and price anyways.

I genuinely hate simply piano so much. Not because it’s a popular app but because their ads said “Why go to a piano lesson that’s a waste of time” and such. I’ve been going to piano lessons for years and it’s so damn annoying to hear people act as though they can do years of training in the app in just months, even weeks. It basically undermines people who go to actual lessons and actually work hard to get better, and that’s what’s so frustrating about this app. I doubt it can teach you anything beyond sheet music and fingering anyways. Edit: it’s completely fine if you use a learning app like this just don’t be stuck up saying “ Haha I learned this song that took you months to learn in one week”

I did a month on it. Then did a month on simply. I’ve learned a lot more on simply. Just how they progress is done really well. Keys / chords have letters so I’ve learned that well. I would have loved to stick with yousician, but the color thing will ruin me and now I like how simply progresses and teaches a lot more
@semperidem2577
@semperidem2577 3 года назад
You're worrying for nothing because you can easily switch off colour coding if you want. Yousician's ability to control tempo and to allow you to focus on Individual sections of a piece using sliders is invaluable. I started with trial of SP then with Yousician, I felt much more at ease with Yousician and am glad I took that route.
@hiimjonpaul
@hiimjonpaul 3 года назад
@@semperidem2577 Did you try both? When you turn off the colors. Yes. That’s great and fine as long you know the notes. If you don’t. Your trailing about lost. So, no. Your statement of worry of nothing is meaningless. And clarifying you can turn off the colors is simply obviously and a given known. Simply unhelpful reply here. Did you even try simply piano? As I found they first teach the letters of the notes then slowly removing them. Rather than a simply off and on. But to each his own. But this reply was just as worthless as I found those colored and in colored notes to be. 🍻
