His Dad looked sad as his wife left him and the young man (mick Hucknall ) for another man, he was only 3 when she left and he kept thinking she would come back but she never did! He wrote this song when he was only 17, it was about him growing up then leaving home at 17.. Mick has a fantastic voice and still does. 👍🏻😁🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Ok, you very much deserve my subscription because I know a fake and you brother are not one!! I like your way of description, its not copied, its genuine- ..and you are so right Mick is a great challenge(not best word)to sing to- one of the most unique sounds in music with complex timing and power and release fluctuations. This has a bit of jazz infusion, and their sound is very unique. If you haven’t listened to ‘The Living Years’, M8ke + the Mechanics, I highly recommend it. It’s a tear jerker, yet very profound.

Try a live version, the call and response in the song together with the emotional inflections Mick injects switching from chest voice to head voice and adding breath to almost make the end of a phrase vanish bring this to another level way above that in the official video. It's enough to give your goosebumps goosebumps of their own.

Simply Red we’re formed in the same year this came out in ‘85 by the lead singer Mick Hucknall who I think was just 17 when he wrote this and I believe is a reflection of a troubled childhood when his mother abandoned him aged 3 😢 They we’re together until 2010 when they disbanded but reformed in 2015 and are about to tour in summer of ‘23. Most of their songs are originals although they’ve done some really GREAT covers that have been big hits for them, check out If You Don’t Know Me By Now and You Make Me Feel Brand New (check their LIVE version of this in Sydney, Australia in 2009), it is stunning!! 😊
