Simulation where larger cities conquer smaller cities and grow

A simulation where cities conquer each other and grow their territory and population.
In each turn of the game, a random city is paired with its closest neighbor. Their populations are then compared. The city with the larger population conquers the other citys territory and population, and is stronger for the next turn. The cycle repeats until there is only one city left.
The video shows five "games", with different winners each game. Cities that are larger in reality have an advantage, but cities with smaller population can win if they are lucky and conquer a few cities before taking on the big ones!
Data from naturalearthdata.com - take it with a grain of salt! Music is Futuremono - Long road from the RU-vid music archive.
Similar to • Battle of the cities: ... but in that version, population size was determined and fixed throughout the game. Here, the population grows each turn, and the outcome is random.

no, cities increase their population by eating smaller cities
@Sundellviz
@Sundellviz 2 года назад
As Thadeus said, cities increase their population by "eating" other cities. So a smaller one can take on an initially larger city by first growing in size. And the order of the matchups is random, so therefore the outcomes differ each round. But larger cities obviously have a big advantage. In the first version of this simulation I did, cities did not take on the population of other cities, so there the result was the same every time - Tokyo wins. Why does some cities annex something few times per turn when other cities annex only one thing? Is it an error in coding?
@Sundellviz
@Sundellviz 2 года назад
No, it is random. Every turn one city is selected at random. The algorithm then checks for the nearest neighbor of that city, and their populations are then compared. The smallest of the two is eaten. So one city might be matched up many times, and another zero times, just because of randomness. Also, to speed up the animation (especially in the beginning) I don't show all the turns. So with each tick in the beginning there are many turns, in which one city might happen to annex several cities, while others don't get matched up at all. Hope that clears it up!

And derive that from history with many factors like size and skill and experience and number of commanders and wealth of conquering countries and closeness of conquers and size of army vs this and that to determine the conquering strength, how much conquering strength flowed into every new era and after was conquered to predict flow and map out the flow of conquering strength over time to predict current one and what factors change conquering strength. No, I included all cities in the data that had at least 10k inhabitants. But the data (from naturalearthdata.com) is not exhaustive, unfortunately. There are many smaller cities that are not included.

naturalearthdata.com. I used the "Pop max" variable, to account for metropolitan area, but the reporting is not consistent across countries.
