Lyrics:
I'll remember it
And Dublin in a rainstorm
And sitting in the long grass in summer
Keeping warm
I'll remember it
Every restless night
We were so young then
We thought that everything
We could possibly do were the right
Then we moved
Stolen from our very eyes
And I wondered where you went to
Tell me when did the light die
You will rise
You'll return
The phoenix from the flame
You will learn
You will rise
You'll return
Being what you are
There is no other Troy
For you to burn
And I never meant to hurt you
I swear I didn't mean
Those things I said
I never meant to do that to you
Next time I'll keep my hands to myself instead
Oh, does she love you
What do you want to do?
Does she need you like I do?
Do you love her?
Is she good for you?
Does she hold you like I do?
Do you want me?
Should I leave?
I know you're always telling me
That you love me
Just sometimes I wonder
If I should believe
Oh, I love you
God, I love you
I'd kill a dragon for you
I'll die
But I will rise
And I will return
The Phoenix from the flame
I have learned
I will rise
And you'll see me return
Being what I am
There is no other Troy
For me to burn
And you should've left the light on
You should've left the light on
Then I wouldn't have tried
And you'd never have known
And I wouldn't have pulled you tighter
No I wouldn't have pulled you close
I wouldn't have screamed
No I can't let you go
And the door wasn't closed
No I wouldn't have pulled you to me
No I wouldn't have kissed your face
You wouldn't have begged me to hold you
If we hadn't been there in the first place
Oh but I know you wanted me to be there oh oh
Every look that you threw told me so
But you should've left the light on
You should've left the light on
And the flames burned away
But you're still spitting fire
Make no difference what you say
You're still a liar
You're still a liar
You're still a liar

I was at the Dominion Theatre in 1988 when this recording was made. The whole night was electric. This wonderful fresh raw talent of rage, love, tenderness, regret, passion. It was all going on. A quite extraordinary performance from a fierce, brave yet vulnerable and tormented young woman. Such incredible bravery to be on that stage and share and bare her soul. Cropped hair, big big Doc Marten boots and a black and white mini skirt. I think polka dots or a ska type square patten. Rebellious, angry... stomping around stage. Spitting. She was so fucking punk, but she wasn't she was uniquely her. Such an extraordinary voice, lyrics of a true poet. To this day....never has a concert made such an impression on me. And this... Mandinka... I'm virtually lost for words. All of us in the theatre that night knew we were witnessing the emergence of an extraordinary talent. She was a warrior, she was a priestess. Complicated, troubled with multiple child hood traumas. Neuro diverse... and a woman who wore her heart on her sleeve and spoke her truth and had strong opinions on many things.... Most of them of valid and with good cause and reason. Of course an artist like this was always going to have a target on her back from those in the Establishment who tremble at the bucking and fucking of the status quo. The press were going to try and break her and hounded her for 35 years. That's what they have always done to strong assertive women artists I've always adored her, her strength and her passion and most importantly bravery. For me, she defined an era. May she now rest in peace.

100 percent, thank you. She was brave enough to take on the once all-powerful Catholic Church and was proved right about how corrupt it was, in particular in relation to child abuse, human rights, racism and women's rights. But she didn't want it destroyed but reborn. She even became a priestess of a not recognized sect of the Catholic Church. RIP dear Sinead.

Thanks for your post. Agreed. A poet. Fierce poet speaking HER truth. Loved her debut album from the start... even if i did not know her backstory that led to her evocative lyrics. Her music always had a raw purity to it. Regret never seeing her live, thx again ~

Indeed. Very few people would look beautiful head-shaven. She was a looker back in the day hairless or otherwise, with those strikingly attractive facial features. Her voice and songwriting were just as impressive. The world owed her a great deal whereas her allegations towards the Pope at that time were far more than hogwash.

I don't want to admit that this is my favorite Sinéad song because she has so many phenomenal songs that I melt into. However, this song is so perfectly visceral in every one of its forms. It just does something to my soul every time (like so many of her songs). I just love her so darned much that I feel like I'm being dishonest with my love for all her pieces. Like I am betraying my admiration of her but I know that's a "me" problem. It is true, I love "Troy"!!!

Sinead will always be ahead of time. She transcends, she doesn't fit in this world because this world is undeserving of her, that's why she'll always be pushed into forgetfulness. The rage, the blunt sincerity of her spirit, there's light in the darkness of times because she exists.

Troy was the first time I heard Sinead sing and it was, and still is, an intense, visceral experience. I have always loved her. I thought this was a break-up song until I read Sinead's memoir -- it's about her monstrous mother...I'm devastated to learn about the level of sadistic torture, she endured as a beautiful, precious girl, and she will always have a special place in my heart.😪💔

I was born on December 6th, 1966 and two days later Sinéad O'Connor. She accompanied my musical youth and with her impressive voice and her short haircut, which was looked at rather incredulously at the time, she caught me. I didn't even pay attention to her date of birth at the time, but something about her always drew me. Now I know it wasn't just their music! R.I.P. Sinead 🌈

I don't understand why every young girl isn't still listening to this. Thankyou Sinead for all the hard times you got me thru when I was a young woman being battered by a world I didn't understand. I stand by the fact that I always liked her as a person and felt she was ahead of her time, bold and went against stereotype after the fallout of her SNL performance, but admittedly I never thought to give her music a listen outside of NC2U, but holy shit this song and her entire 1st album is phenomenal. The Lion and the Cobra - doesnt get better than this, one of my all time favourite albums. Not a bad song on the album. I was 17 when this came out. The Value Of Ignorance tour must have been amazing to be at, gutted I missed out on it. I have watched it on dvd and youtube thousands of times over the years.
