For the fourth year running, ALIA B continues its philanthropic initiative to support National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM), while at the same time collaborating with artists and personalities such as Tunku Nadia of DJ duo Twinkies KL and artist Sofia Haron.
This year, continuing the support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, ALIA B also celebrates children - and the future they hold - in time for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and in support of Children’s Home of
Hope at NCSM.
“My team and I are happy to be able to offer our support for the good work at NCSM,” Alia beams humbly. “And thanks to the encouraging response of the past collaborations, we’ve decided to make this a platform
for artists.
“We have such an inspiring pool of young artists in Malaysia,” Alia praises, “but I specifically wanted this to be a platform for young female artists, because for me, the messages from young women seem like a whisper when really they’re loud and clear - I want that for them.”
Amongst the handful of possible artistic collaborators, it was the uniquely quirky works of Dhan Illiani that caught the eyes and attention of Alia and her creative team. “Dhan’s mixed-media collages struck a chord with us - we love her voice for storytelling, eye for composition and aesthetically, Dhan is nothing short of cool.”
Dhan Illiani’s artwork for this collaboration - aptly titled Sincerely, Adik - envisions the word “adik” as an all-encompassing, ageless and endearing term that we Malaysians use. Whether for a child or anyone younger, the term “adik” here becomes symbolic in a sense that there is an “adik” in you; there is an “adik” in everyone.
“For the collaboration, I want my work to speak of how children shape a better future,” the artist explains thoughtfully and slowly, “through their most innocent, nonsensical and unrealistic dreams, children are inspirational with their spirited bravery to express - all just by being themselves and sharing that magic with the world.”
The artist Dhan delves further into Sincerely, Adik and the symbolism of the butterfly that is shaped by her hands playing Cat’s Cradle with rubber bands: “The butterfly and rubber bands represent the fluidity and continuous change of children growing their wings. Even as adults, we are still growing and learning; finding our place in society and the world; discovering and realising the colours in our wings.”
