This is hard to explain. My son and I are both Autistic. I rend to have severe emotional disregulation. My son is stoic with his emotions. Almost like he is scared of them. He is 8 years old. I put this on thé tv and he went somewhere. He closed his eyes and nodded his head. He started crying but not sadness. He got up from the. Couch and started dancing the most beautiful movements. Joy. Pure joy. Something unlocked in him and he has not been the same since. The light in his eyes was amazing. I just can’t really describe it. It was so beautiful.
I am very touched by your comment. It sounds like he was able to reach a part of himself that is difficult to connect to... So glad to hear you're graceful and responsive to it. All the best to both of you
Yep, he also didn't want clapping the first time. He turned his hand to stop them, but was too late and couldn't speak it, so went with it and mentioned it on the next one.
Look at him... wearing jeans, some gray t-shirt, and black shoes. He's incredibly famous but doesn't want to show off. This man prefers to focus on what he values - the music. Respect.
It’s the way he gets the entire audience to join with him. With this high consistent melodies by the people, mixed in with his improvisations, he’s creating the type of music we hear in movies, typically played by full on orchestras. And he’s able to do it in a matter of seconds. That’s freaking amazing.
@@LauraMorland There's also a video of him doing a less complex version with an unprepared, non-musical audience while participating in an event about the neuroscience of music at the World Science Festival in 2009. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ne6tB2KiZuk.html
The thing that really shocks me about this is how calm Bobby is while playing in front of probably 100,000 people. I'd be freaking out if I had to do that!
@GotWood? Bushcraft and more its musical expectation, its an actual thing, your brain is wired to recognize patterns and and will instinctively recognize the natural progression, unless of course you are absolutely tone deaf, which the vast majority of people wont be cause rhythm is actually quite natural.
What's the most impressive thing that most don't notice is that huge crowds are "stupid" as they are affected heavily by group dynamics. Bobby was first singing a more complex progression and wanted the crowd to join. However some started clapping (which is much easier) and the whole crowd joined clapping. He then tried to sing higher notes hoping the crowd would realise which didn't work. So he made a complete break and started over. This time he he avoided the repetitive motion of his hand which would just animate the clappers again and just sing a single note waiting until the crowd joined in. Once they were actually singing (or tuned in) he could actualy work with the crowd. Controlling such a huge group of people is not easy and when they don't do what you want it's really hard to get them back under your control. That's one of the brilliant takeaways of this performance (besides the awesome improv and the amazing Bobby McFerrin). I always like to come back to this.
I think from 0:00 to 1:40 is some of the most beautifully constructed freestyles i've ever heard in my life. It's like something that could be played in heaven (if there is one)
One of the tally interesting things about Bobby is that he takes influences from so many different musical genres and cultures across the world, and puts them together in his improv. You can hear traditionally Indian and East Asian sounds in his melodies, as well as several African styles of harmony and body percussion, mixed together with a knowledge of classical and contemporary European musical theory. It's absolutely masterful
@@kenjackben It's "gibberish", which some people call vocables...it's extraodinary isn't it? one doesn't need words that are recognizable...I've played like this for many years with a song circle (well, not like This.....never claimed to be a performer and I've not heard anyone with Bobby McFerrin's vocal skills)It's like going back to being a child (they don't simply vocalize to learn to talk) + all & every kind of influence and in Bobby's case he's from a classical music set of parents & is also a conductor...here demonstrating conducting the entire stadium !
Nah you got it completely backwards. All those cultural music forms you mentioned are branches of the African Continental and Diasporic musical traditions of Black Folks. He is manifesting the essential source creative black soul musicality from which all music of all peoples derive.
It just so happened that I was part of the event. It was one of the most impressive singing experiences of my life, singing opera choruses with 54,000 singers and symphony orchestra, and then to improvise with Bobby McFerrin. Just to illustrate how difficult it was to bring the huge choir together: because of the size of the stadium, the sound took about one second from one end of the choir to the other. Not easy to improvise rhythmically under these circumstances. His improvisations where much more differentiated when I sang with him later in Zurich in a small group.
Why didn't you scold the asian girl that clapped immediately after she was instructed not to cap? @3:10 I'm just kidding.. Your lucky to have heard and saw this live.
@@Wallyworld30 :D That was because he was a Bavarian. They can't help it, Oktoberfest. Seriously. I was shocked at how untalented the amateur choristers were at improvising. I once improvised on stage with McFerrin in Zurich, and the audience was much more musically intelligent there (many music students among them). Nevertheless, the sound of 54,000 singers was simply overwhelming.
The healing capacity of mass choir events like this is off the charts.. this should be something we see in every town and city of the world, not just one offs.. people could heal singing on street corners and in parks, two people harmonizing can heal a small group, a stadium full of voices CAN heal the world. We need more of this 🥰
The fact that one man, no different from you or I, one man can connect thousands of people in an instant with the sound of music. Music is a beautiful thing and it will NEVER die.
He was merely saying don't clap because we have natural tendency to speed up and also it takes away from the beautifulness in which he was trying to create with the different arpeggiations. Much respect to Bobby what he is able to do. This particular video was over 7 minutes and everybody loved him. The video speaks for itself. The gift of music
im so happy he said "DON'T CLAP" that second time bc when they started clapping it was so off beat and i wanted to hear the melody lol love this man, so talented
I FOUND THIS AFTER YEARS OF NOT BEING ABLE TO FIND THIS I remember this from when I was like 8 or something and my music teacher showed us this in her class, and this just gave me a great appreciation for artistry and the amazing people who participate. To this day his imagination just amazes me.
It never fails to give me full body chills the moment the crowd gets it and becomes this beautiful fluid instrument that Bobby can play like no other. To be a part of that must have been nearly transcendent.
I love music. I’m a (former) musician, haven’t played in a few years but I miss it so much. Idk why but hearing music just sends me to another planet almost like a drug. The emotions I feel when I listen to certain music, is unexplainable. I WISH I had a good singing voice because I would never stop singing. If you ever see me listening to a certain song and I’m crying, it’s not because I’m sad about something. It’s the harmonies, melodies, and EVERYTHING that just make those tears flow! Idk why lmao
And here i am.... sitting in my room on a summer evening, it's raining outside it's dark and there are lightnings nearly every 2 minutes. I am just sitting there at the window watching the lightnings and listening to this masterpiece. This is probably one of the moments in life i will never forget.. the feeling you get is absolut incredible. Thank you bobby mcferrin
Music, in & OF itself SHOULD be ALL it takes to bring this entire Human 'Race' to it's senses & the realization there is NO reason to find anything in each-other worth hurting each-other for.
JWitt30 Barely just mention something you like or dislike and just wait for the wave of hate to come like in another other field of interest in people. Fundamentally basic statement is barely true and applies to more then music.
I have been jamming with a group of around 14 people ceremoniously for years just increasing our vibration and there are moments where we have divine moments and we lived for those moments for many years. The highlight of many of our lives.
Still sad to see his disappointment when people start clapping (instead of singing) the first time. One of my favorite music videos of all time. What a master of vocals. So much love.
I love that the audience’s part starts at 3:02 but it’s only on his second bass note at 3:22 that their participatory role reveals its power. I wonder how they all felt at that moment
Музыка наших предков, музыка всех нас. Эти песни они пели у костров и мотивы были у них такими. Слушая подобное мы возвращаемся к ним, к тем кострам! Мы все одного поля ягода!
This is really beautiful. It’s so amazing how he has fused so many different melodies from around the world and made them all sound so harmonious. From African, to Indian, to Middle-Eastern, to Nordic, to Asian, he wrapped them together with his expansive knowledge of music theory. Absolutely magnificent.
Absolutely incredible. Moved me to tears. It's too bad he's best known for "Don't Worry, Be Happy"... While it's not a bad song, it doesn't show the diversity of his sound.
Бодді Мферкін дякую вам за вашу душу, дуже жалісно що вас більшість людей цього світу нерозуміє, а якби зрозуміли люди жилиби радісніше, і турботливіше до всього,.. вибачайте за наш світ ......
This is so otherworldly and absolutely magical. I get choked up when people form a collective vibe and this is so beautiful during this COVID world we are living through. 2020 go home you're drunk!!
He can't be human! It was a long time since I last listened to McFerrin's wonderful music, today I re-discovered him, while showing different and alternative musicians to my cello playing daughter Amanda, whose starting college next year, majoring in Music... I'm so happy...
I have been to Mr. McFerrin's concerts and there is almost always a time where he gets spontaneous participation like this. It is incredible to be in the middle of that pure music. It is so joyful whether you can sing well or not. He is like the pied piper. We just follow him.He is so accomplished and well known around the world for all types of music. I've seen him conduct a full orchestra doing Beethoven and Chopin without a score. He's done a gospel celebratory program. He is well known for his world music like this. Amazing talent. Thank you so much for posting.
.... well, ok. You can clap. (All the grownups smile.) My 3-year old STOOD UP at a Peter, Paul, and Mary concert and declared that they were singing the words wrong. I started to grab her ... and then all that love came pouring over. So, ... ok.
3:08 you forgot ...full 2 second pause😹clearly she misheard & was zoned out in focused on helping whatever It was get unstuck between Bobby & the crowd tho😆 adorable
@@intercat4907 pretty sure Peter Paul & Mary could never be offended with any innocents lyrical alterations. That's lovely, I hope for her sake they play Puff the Magic..
Straight up, never heard a live vocal performance that has made me genuinely feel the connection between the audience. For that brief moment, humanity in that room was united.
Did you notice how he reacted to them the first time they clapped? 🤣 He was like... "Yaaallll.....dafuq............ SHOW MUST GO OOO OO OOONNN" Then corrected it the next time round.
These performances are absolutely amazing. He uses nothing but a microphone and the people around him to produce a magical effect, the human mind is his instrument and he is a master
This was spirit. He was connected to a higher level of consciousness and only those on that level too will appreciate this. I can't be the only one that was hearing different cultures and backgrounds. Man is a legend
+Sigmund Freud He wanted them to join his singing (like don't clap, sing!), when they did it really sounded great, too bad they haven't tried on the parts that repeated
He was probably trying to get different sections of the audience to repeat the different pitches he kept repeating to make a beautifu,l harmonious melody. That would have been cool if the crowd knew.
