I can't even imagine, how hard it was to translate this song! And English version is absolutely exciting! P.S, I think that it was possible to keep original German term Kaiser, instead of emperor. In XIX century it appeared in many European languages.

i do not have words left to appriciate the beauity of the lyrics and the spirit it captures of the soldiers during the war it is exceptional , phenominal , outsanding , un rivaled man i dont have words to express my feeling right now and expecially the last line "and i'll only know when i'm deceased when mother cries for me" those lines just hit deep and hard into my soul exceptional work

I love the image that you used. Every time i listen to this version i always fixate on that soldier whos staring back, at the moment that the camera happened to take the photo. They say that eyes are the windows into the soul, i think that they are windows into the mind, and their emotions, what they're feeling, and what they have felt. This guy looks so tired of constantly being on alert, knowing that any moment, a shell could come crashing down. That he would only have a few moments to recognize his own demise and to remember his life, his mother. Does he even still have a mother? do you think she died early because of a disease? or what not. To those soldiers that look back, I will always remember them, when they were marching off to what they thought were their deaths, (even if they survived the war, a part of them died in there) they took a moment to look back, and you get to see for a moment, in all the chaos and inhumane actions, just another human. War is a terrible thing, and makes one think very hard, and for very long about what we are truly doing here, if we all are just fighting each other. Lets hope our future to be bright, and not black and white. Such as this photo, with the soldier who looked back.

Iv listened to this song for a very long time i do not know German but did know the very weary tone of the song but hearing it in English gives me chills and really paints the horrors of the first world war.

I know this is supposed to be a WWI song, but it also scarily portrays the predicament of the German Soldier in WWII, especially considering the final line "How long will the sun shine down on me before I'm free?" In most propaganda posters, the Swastika was portrayed as the sun heralding the dawn of a new Era and was the symbol of oppression for most of those who lived beneath its embrace.

Guys, 1. The song ISN'T from the 1957 "movie of the same name", the movie is "The Wayward Bus", based on John Steinbeck's book and "Wo alle Straße enden" is the title of its German version. The movie has nothing at all to do with World Wars, or any war. 2. All stanzas after the first one are written by Karl. 3. It might be just me but I couldn't find ANY historic record on this song. The oldest record I can find is on Amazon Music, 2015. Still love the song, though.
