Those lyrics are very distinctively German-American of the period. It's even cooler to me to have something that's authentically of Americans who came over from Germany and believed in what the song stood for. It's a symbol that they existed, and that's awesome.

The assasination of the prince coused a war becouse serbia declined the austrian investigator information and banned them. Germany than received a war declaration by england and five ours later its communicaoiln relay was cut. And to top it up the english royal family keept repeating to say "we can win a lot and have npthing to loose in a war with germany" And searches for allies by sayibg "germany trades better and we will not work more" Edit: grammar

German used to be the second most spoken language in the U.S. and was fairly common. It was then demonized with World War One and with Mexican immigrants Spanish has since taken its place as America's second language but isn't near as pervasive and influential as German was on the culture of the United States. There are some Native German speaking people in the Deep South, Texas, and in some communities throughout the U.S. Mennonites and the Amish also speak Pleitdietch which is an older Germanic language spoken in Germany that is very similar to Standard German. The Native German speaking population of the U.S. have their own dialect distinct from that of Standard German but both are mutually intelligible. We even considered joining the Germans in WW1 but we joined the Entente instead because we wouldn't be able to trade with both because the British weren't allowing trade to Germany. So we decided that we would have better trade with the British.

I can't speak about all Mennonites, but I have met no Amish who speak Plautdietsch natively. They speak [Pennsilfaanisch] Deitsch (Pennsylvania Dutch), which arose as a language from communities of speakers of southern and western dialects of High German and exposure to the English in N. America. Deitsch was huge in the rural populations of Pennsylvania and surrounding states and some cities like Reading, Lancaster and Philly. There is a lot of mutual inteligibility between Deitsch and standard German as well. There were even some attempts by secular Deitsch speakers to standardize Deitsch and really form a literary language with it, as many Deitsch speakers wrote with Hochdeutsch orthography. But as you mentioned, the world wars really supressed all of that. I'd love to know more about Plautdietsch speakers in N. America tho. Around the northeastern US, "PA Dutch" populations are still pretty dominant in the historical narrative of early German populations in the young United States.

“There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all.”“This is just as true of the man who puts “native” before the hyphen as of the man who puts German or Irish or English or French before the hyphen. Americanism is a matter of the spirit and of the soul. Our allegiance must be purely to the United States. We must unsparingly condemn any man who holds any other allegiance.”“But if he is heartily and singly loyal to this Republic, then no matter where he was born, he is just as good an American as any one else.”“The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English- Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian- Americans, or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality than with the other citizens of the American Republic.”“The men who do not become Americans and nothing else are hyphenated Americans; and there ought to be no room for them in this country. The man who calls himself an American citizen and who yet shows by his actions that he is primarily the citizen of a foreign land, plays a thoroughly mischievous part in the life of our body politic. He has no place here; and the sooner he returns to the land to which he feels his real heart-allegiance, the better it will be for every good American.” Theodore Roosevelt

It's pretty crazy how diverse the union army was, 150,000 Irishmen, an entire division of Germans who didn't even speak English, 160,000 African American soldiers, etc.

yes, many Revolutionarys of 1848 went to America in the Exil and fought then in Civil War, Franz Sigel from Baden for example

It's a reference to the 1848 Revolution in the German States. After it's failure many former revolutionaries moved to the US and later fought in the civil war.
