For coffee without sugar, you can order either Kopi-o Kosong (black coffee without sugar) or Kopi-c Kosong (coffee with evaporated milk without sugar). Also, locals won't buy food first without securing a seat thus we have a 'chope' culture whereby we put random items like packet tissue, lanyard/card, umbrella, and etc on the table to mark our spot lol.

Hi Josie for the Ya Kun eggs, you need to put a little soya sauce (the black sauce that you were holding) and add some pepper as well. Use a teaspoon and mix everything up. Dip your toast. It will bring your experience up a few levels.

As a local, I am always proud of our multi-racial, multi-religion, multi-cultures. You should visit Waterloo Street and you will find a Hindu Temple next to a Taoist Temple, or Upper Serangoon Road where you can need a Muslim Mosque, a Christian Church and a Taoist Temple standing next to one another, and many other locations where we display racial / religion / culture harmony.

Oooooh I looooove Muah Chee!!! Soooo good with the peanuts! But also yummy with black sesame. I love it so much, I make it at home in Oz hahaha. The texture does take a bit of getting used to but I love all different textures and also mochi, which muah chee is similar to and uses the same glutinous rice flour to make

Muah Chee is basically glutinous rice flour mix with water then put in a pot with oil to cook it.. then put it into a peanut and sugar coating.. of course the coating you can always used your own mix like macha or black sesame seeds.. etc... but that one you eat is the traditional type... been having it that way since 40 years ago..

Yakun really have the best toast! As many has mentioned, you can actually asked them to tailor to the kind of coffee to your likings. In singapore, kopi/coffee = milk coffee… for black coffee = kopi O… either one you can ask them to have no sugar or less sugar… so you can either ask for kopi or kopi-O less sweet or no sugar… Recommend you try their peanut butter + kaya toast… kaya + butter toast… For the eggs… we normally eat it either dipped as you did, or alternatively, just add in pepper and soy sauce to enhance the flavour before you dip the toasts! Enjoy! Also… do have a go at some malay food at the hawker centre… such as lontong, mee siam or mee rebus :) Geylang serai market food centre (nearest mrt station : paya lebar)

I am sorry, but Ah Heng Curry noodle is a more watered down version of Heng Kee Chicken Curry noodle stationed directly below Ah Heng. You should have tried the Outram Char Kway Teow, Crayfish Hor Fun or the Bak Chor Mee directly opposite the Char Kway Teow. Normally we Singaporean add a teaspoon or two of dark soy sauce into the half boil eggs. The Malaysian would like light soy sauce rather than dark soy sauce. Of course, some white pepper on top completes the ritual.

At 12:00 mark, that's "muah chee". Made by steaming glutinous rice and then repeatedly pounding it while it is hot to form this gluteny, starchy dough. Locally, it is often served with crushed peanuts and sugar. Has to be eaten while warm. Similar dessert like this can be found throughout asia, from china to Thailand to Laos to Japan, Korea and Taiwan. The difference would be the coating, some use soya powder, others matcha. There is always a joke about never eat this when you are old, either you have your dentures mashed up with the dough, or you choke! 🤣🤣🤣

Good sampling of Singaporean foods! Yummy! "Pulling" coffee or tea creates bubbles to make them frothy (much like frothy milk in cappucino)..I believe the rice used in Chicken Rice is Thai jasmine rice, cooked in chicken broth (with chicken fat), garlic and fragrant pandan leaves. Muah Chee/ Mochi originated in China (you can read the wikipedia link for Mochi en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mochi). Hence the similarity in pronounciations.

If you want to try durian, you have to change the way you think of it as a fruit. Throw away all connotations of juicy or sweet... think of it instead as a custard. A complex custard that may be sweet, bitter, bittersweet/alocholic etc(depending on which durian you get). And of course, the cheaper durians dont cut it, we locals usually spend quite a large sum on good quality Mao Shan Wang durians which can be expensive. However it taste sweet and slight bitter and complex and flavorful. If you are still cautious, try to find Red Prawn durian, its is usually slight redder and much sweeter... more palatable for people trying it for the first time.

We stayed 3 full days, and it didn’t seem like enough but we spent most of that time making RU-vid videos 😂 if you were just exploring, doing your own thing etc then I think 3-4 full days is enough to shop, explore, see the bay, visit the gardens by the bay, and a couple of other things with some rest. Especially because of the price of things 😂 but if it was your only holiday and could spurge a little it would be okay! 😁😁🙏🏻❤️

It will be nice to explore in a slow pace for a week if you have time. But if you do not have time here’s my suggestion for a 4days stay: 1) Jewel - this is next to the airport where you can see the tallest indoor waterfall in the world. There’s a lot of interesting shops, restaurants and cinema. You either visit when touch down or before flying off. 2) Gardens By The Bay + Marina Bay Sands. These 2 are actually within walking distance, so it saves time and transport to visit both on the same day. 3) Little India + Arab Street + Chinatown. They are not exactly close but can be reached by bus/train within 25mins. 4) Sentosa island - lots of activities, normally it’s cheaper to purchase tickets online. Or Mandai Zoo. Either one one requires a full day ✌🏻

The coffee, eggs and toast cost only half the price at Hawker centres and at neighbourhood coffeeshop. For coffee without sugar you could order kopi-o kosong.

@huaiwei
@huaiwei 2 года назад
@@josieliftsthings Ya kun started off as a normal hawker centre stall as well. It is not that they are particularly good....they just took the bold step to modernise their trade, while most others remained as humble stalls. Hence the quality of the dish is fairly standard across Singapore, but at different price points. But I am glad they helped to make our humble breakfast more accessible to tourists who may be put off from ordering at hawker centres without a clear menu. ;)

Kopi is black coffee with condensed milk. If you want it unsweetened, try ordering kopi C, which is black coffee with evaporated milk. And you can ask for kopi gao (for a stronger coffee). Shall stop here now hahahaha! Is that just butter and sugar toast or kaya and butter toast? As you did not mention kaya....don't tell me you missed out eating kaya and butter?! Kaya is a egg and coconut custard/jam. You should have added the soy sauce as well into the soft boiled eggs. Then you would have the salty and sweet combi. FYI if unsure, just look around to see how the locals eat :D Thailand durian and Malaysian durian are totally different. Durian lovers only have love for one or the other. That spongy stuff in the curry mee is called a fried tofu puff. In Asia, we eat our rice with the spoon, if you are give a spoon and fork and plate :D

You're supposed to put soya sauce and white pepper into the eggs. Otherwise you're just dipping it into any runny eggs. Also, I recommend the kaya french toast next time. I prefer it to the toast.

Kaya toast is a western adaptation. Chinese immgrants from hainan used to work for British in the colonial era. Laksa noodle chinese adaptation of malay food.

To be slightly more specific, kaya is actually Peranakan (Nonya), as is Laksa. They are the earlier waves of ethnic Chinese who migrated to Malaya before the British did and mixed Malay and Chinese culture over generations.
