The skies are bluer, carbon emissions are falling, and it appears we’re giving the environment a much-needed break. The thing is - have we really moved the needle on climate change, or is this just a comfortable illusion?
In this four-part series, we confront a global threat - climate change - with host Janil Puthucheary. He hits the ground to investigate what Singapore is doing to combat climate change. Are we too small to make a difference?
We use future tense when we talk about climate change, but it’s already affecting communities all over the world. And the effects are not missed on us either. From plastics to electricity to food, he breaks down the little things that’d make up unique solutions for a unique nation. Solutions that we have to start on, NOW.
And in a final war cry, he rallies Singaporeans to fix it with personal responsibility.

Fascinating! Thank you for sharing the Climate change stories Janil! I live in the Netherlands and the awareness here is heavily underrated as well. Singapore is considered very progressive and people like you do create more awareness. I do hope that climate change will be noticed more in the Netherlands and the rest of the world as well.

Since we are moving towards 6.9 million and then 10 million population,which means more cars,more trains,more congestion,more condos and high rise and more air conditioned shopping malls.....massive increase in electricity consumption.....Singapore is already one of the highest per capita electricity consumption in the world......we use three times more electricity per person on this island than Malaysia.... Anything we do is moot and for wayang only. Expect ambient temperature in Singapore to hit 36c by 2030.

Yes each of us layman can learn to be more sensible and responsible with our electricity, food and material consumption. However the largest culprits in Singapore are not covered in this video: the C-suites aka decision making team behind the revenue-generating industries: Oil and Gas, Manufacturing, Construction, Real Estate etc. They struggle with economic and environmental balance. Let's hope that our future generation get inspired by this video and grow up to become decision makers and politicians that embark on a much greener trajectory in the near future.

Gotta do away with smoking, no more burning rituals, cut the amount of private-own vehicles. That's why vehicle prices are high, road taxes, increasing tax on tobacco. Burning of paper has to be be greatly reduced. Our survival is beyond religion; beyond politics. We need to think long term.

We need a real threat, like E.T. threatening to invade if we don't reduce our emissions to reach the goal, or maybe current leader threatening to nuke us all if we don't~ That'll certainly give everyone a push~ XD (It's not practical isn't it? XD Though I like the first one with aliens)

The more practical solution: charging $5 per container and $2 per set of disposable cutlery/plastic bag. Don't want to pay? Bring your own reusables. Let the extra charge be used to fund recycling instead of conveniently dumping them onto third world countries

There is already a Singapore-based solution, it's called Vechain and is being adopted globally. From tracking carbon credits, to cleaning oceans and improving supply chain management. Please do a video on that.

Each individual human being living will certainly produce significant CO2 and contribute to climate changes. All the experts getting together to solve this complex problem are really having a hard time. One thing for sure if we reduce the human population drastically in a short time time can make a significant difference in reducing the severity of this problem at hand. But then how can we do it ???
@kehoongluah9817
@kehoongluah9817 3 года назад
In my opinion, it a huge misunderstanding when he said "nothing" @ 12:00. If every individual feels like they can't make a different, then no one will do it. We can always blame the gov for not doing better but if we as an individual don't play our part, then really nothing will change. So if everyone listens to him and feel that since we as an individual can't do much, then no one will start doing anything.
@MegaSportsluver

Preach! We can't just depend on the govt to do EVERYTHING, yet kpkb when they want to levy environmental-related taxes on us to discourage us from consuming unnecessarily! Edit: as a first world/developed country, we consume wayyyyyyyyy more than third world/developing countries, so if everyone reducing consumption, there will definitely reduce emissions!
@alimfuzzy
@alimfuzzy 3 года назад
People forget there was an absolutely huge environmental campaign in the later 80s and early 90s. Nothing changed. The only way for environmental change to work is to make it cheaper to do so. It's like health food. It's important but people are still gaining weight, why? Health food is not convenient and is actually more expensive than fast food. And when it is competitive, it's discovered that the health food isn't that healthy anyway. Same with the environment. Take that towel. I bet you it was more expensive than a regular towel you get at a supermarket. They are giving you the illusion of environmentalism while jacking up the price and making more waste. Make reusability the cheaper option and you start to move in the right direction.

Hypothetically, in a fictional scenario in a few thousand years later: A few weeks before the rise of the sea levels that will cover Singapore's land mass, the elites with their military and police will abscond with the nation's precious items, gold, silver and other valuables to other nations to live. Thus leaving the middle class and poor with little means of escape. Some of the humanitarian nations, e.g. Malaysia and other nations may deploy air and sea vehicles to ferry the refugee to safety to their nations where the refugees will sacrifice their body in exchange for the survival of themselves and/or loved ones. On the issue of Singapore drainage infrastructure that result in blockages and flash flood that harm or kill people, properties and people. Will it be possible to drill a stainless steel rust resistant O hook into the concrete ceiling of drains where a sea worthy cable is dead hooked to the O hook and the other end of the cable is a gorilla plastic wheel linked to waterproof circuitry and data sim card. How fast the plastic wheel rotates provides data on how fast the water gush through the drainage channel. The rotating of the wheel recharges the circuitry's battery. Before the battery is out, it will use the data sim to signal the engineer on its location to send team down to maintain it. The device use the data sim to communicate which drain doesn't have water gushing out to communicate potential chokepoints for human remediation. However, the devices may be subject to theft. Other issues include hard waste that may damage the device. There may be other applications for the aforementioned device. Politically, all humans play a part in the business processes. It doesn't make sense to indict the business owners of industries XYZ for their part in the environment, if consumers don't buy, then the industries XYZ don't exist. However if you empirically understand human nature and Maslow's hierarchy of needs, you know that we humans consume to survive and thrive. That's why even the governments and the scholars don't pretend to makeup a fancy word to call us other than "consumers". If X have no part to play on Earth, then it will be slowly removed from our evolution processes. All diverse players are interconnected on Earth be it humans, animals, living things, inanimate objects and the environment. Scientifically, humans are wired to think short term and more impulsively first before they can think long term. It's like the old tale where the frog in a pot of water that is beginning to boil relaxing in the calming waters until suddenly the boiling pot of water kills it. Thus to address the environment issue, one ought to start from a psychological perspective of the power players. Know that not all power players have a master's degree in psychology. If you look at the recent hundreds of years history of man, actions are taken now so future generations pay for it. If you want change, start from educating the young at childcare. It's much harder to change the minds and habits of adults. Please feedback to management.

@Migsy P I disagree, Singapore have no natural resources thus every single cent is the blood, sweat and tears of the human capital. By planting trees, instead of spending on luxurious or retail goods, it demonstrate values and long term planning. It means a better future for our future generations which includes the grandchildren from all social classes regardless of ethnicity, age or gender.

Because the extreme cold air and ice came from the poles. The poles were warming at record levels when extreme cold hit the northern hemisphere. To really understand this you need to understad polar vortex.

@@jk35260 thx....i will find out more... thx for sharing....
@jk35260
@jk35260 3 года назад
@@wijakesuma You sound genuinely interested. I will do some explanation. At the poles, there is a jet stream of fast moving air. Further higher up at the strastosohere, there is the polar vortex. The polar vortex is usually spinning in a circle due to the strong pressure difference between the cold air in the pole and warmer air at the lower part of the hemisphere. Recently, the poles got a lot warmer than usual. This caused the polar vortex to become wavy and flow more slowly. The result is the cold air travels further downward. You should also understand that the poles goes without sunlight for 6 months in a year. During that period, the poles are colder and ice accumulates. For the other half of the year, it gets the sun and you get some melting especially the sea ice. But the trend is clear, more ice is melting than ice can be replaced.
