Glad I came across this comment section. I was struggling to decide what to do with a good amount of money in the bank doing nothing. I would be happy if you could advise me, as I am ready to go the passive income path...

What if interest rates continue to go up? Will it come to a point where holding the ssb bought a year ago doesnt make sense anymore?
@TheFifthPersonChannel

You can redeem your previous SSB with no penalty and purchase the new SSB to enjoy the higher interest rate

lol can consider SG Tbills AAA graded as well.. best u can use CPF OA to throw it in. Next trench in early August gonna be higher than CPF OA rate! Typical issue size amount around S$2 billion to S$4 billion.

Good points too! The SSB is more flexible but you can't use CPF to purchase it.

There is a 1 month waiting time for the fund to be returned to us when we redeem the SSB. May I ask whether the waiting time also entitle to the (coupon) interest?

For Jun 2022 issuance, those who applied for S$18K or lower were fully allotted, subject to the individual max limit. Those who applied >$18k, the allotment was not full, as you have pointed out.

Yes, looks like it take some time to reach the limit of $200K.

@@TheFifthPersonChannel yup, then again, at the same time, mas is also increasing the allocation size from June to July. From 600m to 700m. Hopefully they will increase it further in the future. 😛

we can calculate the following month SSB issue by simply calculating the sgs yield. At this point of time, no the September SSB will be below 3 percent and hover around 2.8 percent.

Just exploring on this further. Would you consider starting up a “The Fifth Person Fund” in the future where people can invest in? Something like the Compounder Fund.

Extract from MAS website: This Savings Bond was allotted using the Quantity Ceiling format. Applicants who applied for S$18,000 or lower were fully allotted, subject to the individual allotment limits. But that was for June. I guess the ceiling will be close to 10K for July.

At the moment, is govt treasury bill better than SSB? At least for short term period.
@TheFifthPersonChannel
@TheFifthPersonChannel 2 года назад
The SSB is more flexible than SGS bonds though. The SSB can be withdrawn at face value at any time, but SGS bonds are sold on the secondary market at the prevailing market price.

Thanks. Treasury bill is offering 2.93% atm for 6m. For short term horizon, this will be better than SSB though you cannot withdraw anytime

T-bills can use CPF but cannot do online according to what I read. T-bills yields are higher becos they are short-term (6mths, 1yr) but early redemption subjected to market prices. So just hold till maturity
@TheFifthPersonChannel
@TheFifthPersonChannel 2 года назад
Yes! You use CPF for SGS bonds which are different from SSB.

Good presentation guys. A couple of things that you could have emphasized more. The scheme is oriented toward smaller investors due to the $200k overall cap (all issues combined) and the allocation process when oversubscribed. For example, in the most recent issue applicants who applied for S$18k or less were fully allotted. Applicants wanting to invest say $100k would have been allotted no more than $18k. Hence it could take several issues/months to invest $100k. I'm told that this is partly because holders of previous SSB issues are redeeming with a view to re-invest in new SSB issues that of course offer much higher interest rates. This is helping fuel over-subscription at present. So if you want to invest up to the $200k limit it might take a long time!

Pls get the facts right…. There is no compounding here…. Interest is paid out every 6 months
@TheFifthPersonChannel

It is simple interest which is also represented on an average compounded basis. This compounded figure is also headlined on the MAS website: www.mas.gov.sg/bonds-and-bills/Singapore-Savings-Bonds
