Singapore Vlog
Kampong Glam
In 1824, Sultan Hussein Mohamed Shah built his palace in the Rochor area near central region of Singapore. Aside from his 600 over family members, the other residents in the region include Chinese, Arabs, Javanese, and other Muslim immigrants. A mosque was also built in 1824 to serve the community. A century later, Sultan Mosque was built on the original site of the old mosque. Sultan Mosque was designated a national monument in 1975.
Over the years, religious, cultural and social functions take place in the vicinity of the mosque. The rich heritage and vibrant communities of Kampong Glam have attracted tourists from all over the world.
Many roads in Kampong Glam are named after Muslim places in the world - e.g. Bussorah Street, the pedestrian street framed by palm trees, leading to the Sultan Mosque.
Let's take walk along North Bridge Road, one of the oldest roads in Singapore, built using convict labour. North Bridge Road stretches from the Rochor River to Singapore River, where it is joined by South Bridge Road in the Chinatown and Outram.
Haji Lane is a colourful and highly Instagrammable back lane, famous for its street art, exotic cafes and bars. It's one of the narrowest streets in Singapore yet there is much to explore.
There is so much to read and learn about this significant region in Singapore. Here are just a few links for my audience to explore:
