I am retired . I think this ‘financial freedom ‘ concept is a marketing tool for insurance and investment company. Do not aspire to retire early and have financial freedom’ . Most of Singaporeans can have a roof over their heads thanks to HDB. Spend according to your budgets. Spend more time with the kids and their studies in their younger days. Secondary schools are to difficult to tutor them. But you already build a foundation and character for your kids when they are young. Don’t be kiasu. Forgo expensive tuition and expensive play school . Church or government kindergartens are ok. Have kids but don’t make them in image of what you want them to be. Train their characters and they will take care of themselves.

Ck is typical of a young Singaporean who will carefully weigh pros and cons before any decision. No guarantee kids can give you happiness; they will drain your finances, they may turn out to be total brats. In short, all the sacrifice for nothing in return. As if kids are part of the equation that will definitely produce an answer you want. 1+1=2. Of course they are not. So why do people have them? Yes, it the intangible part that is brushed over in this video. This intangible part that parents who want kids don’t have to explain to others. It outweighs any logical explanation, planning and argument. Kids make life worth living, sacrifice worth taking. Not everyone agrees of course. Let’s lead our own path.

Its NEVER dollars and cents when you have kids. Kids makes one wonder about life and because they are so fresh, they bring a new perspective to jaded middle age parents. Its the journey of having brought a kid into this world and growing with him/her that makes it worthwhile. Kids will make you become a BETTER version of yourself if you love them.. and you will finally know what it means to love another human being MORE than you love yourself.

I wonder if CK is filial to his parent knowing how much they sacrifice 😂 Then talk about Msian that comes and earn 3.3x so sacrifice to leave their family is a tradeoff. They can choose to stay there and enjoy family life too.

I’m sorry but there is an absolute line to be drawn. We cannot do so like in our past parents generation and hope things just become better or work itself out when the kids come along. Now today salaries are not ascending along with inflation and rising costs. Any reasonable family or married couple need to work out their sums before having kids.
@amazingrace238

@@shurakishi4707you have completely missed the point. I’m not talking about being able to afford kids. I’m not advocating for people to have kids without doing their sums. What I’m referring to is CK’s point about parents making sacrifices for their kids and that they may not get the expected “rewards”. He also made a point about not being able to “return” the kid. Once you go forward, you can’t turn back this decision. Which parent doesn’t know that? How many parents decided to sacrifice their personal time regardless to forge a better life for their kids? These days, most people have kids as a result of a considered decision. They then decided to go ahead and make the sacrifice anyway so their kids can have a better life than they did as kids. This is the point I wanted to bring up. Not every parent will expect their child to in turn, repay them or support their retirement, IMO it shouldn’t be expected anyway. Parenting is the perfect example of selfless love. But alas, humans are imperfect beings so I don’t expect every parent to think alike. This is a quote by Khalil Gibran my spouse and I live by: poets.org/poem/children-1

While it is ultimately a largely non-financial decision to have kids or not, in SG context, it is very important to count the dollars and plan, as part of being responsible parents. Don't have kids just for fun/love, and end up becoming a burden to them when they grow up and want to build their own family. Those of us who are sandwiched class ourselves, or see how our own parents were, should understand the challenges. Medical costs will continue to sky rocket. Then the cycle of being stuck in same financial level remains in the family line for generations to come. Key is to be intent on breaking the cycle if you want kids, as that will be the greatest gift you can gift them in return for you enjoying parenthood.

$2000/mth is about right, this is my breakdown: $300 - endowment for local u education $100 - accident and ci insurance $1200 - childcare and enrichments $200 - medical and misc $200 - food $2000 until go army (age 20) is around $480k, assuming the kid self sufficient after that. Some things are what we choose to provide for him, like full uni education, insurance and above average childcare/enrichment. Or one can always do the bare minimum and let him swim/sink along the way. This is excluding things that we provide for him like transportation (car) since we would have it incurred anyway.

The truth is nowadays a lot of people selfish and only think of "Lifestyle"..To them children is a burden.I tks god for giving me 4 kids,Its a blessing..Pls don't be afraid you wouldn't die of Hunger having children especially in Singapore.Every Child has its own sustenance. Don't keep chasing the future as the future truthfully belongs to the Almighty not you.

A certain level of lifestyle is needed to keep sanity, good health and to achieve personal aspirations. To each his own. Some may find that having kids are not a problem. Others may find a lot of problems having kids. The problem really is don’t judge and don’t impose personal beliefs on another individual. Just because they do not want to have kids is not a wrong thing to do

30 years later, we will be talking about people with no kids that live with money BUT loneliness, sickness without loved one beside them for extended period, no funeral , die and rotten in their home for months until police come to claim their body. Your burden when you are aged in future is your responsibility. You can avoid these consequences now before it hit you. Your friends and older siblings will be old and have to worry for their own health. Your pets also have to find a new home. Probably Nursing homes would be too overwhelmed and you pay thru the roof to be a queue or ballot to get in.

It doesn’t mean you are not alone even if you have children. Going by how things are going, even if one have kids, in the future moving on they will be too busy to even take care of their parents as they need to put in maximum hours and effort at work just to make ends meet

Some people no kids also don't live a luxury lifestyle. So is kids really the issue? Kids brings experience and joy that its hard to explain or justify (which they/we do not need) to those that are already hardwired to think children are a financial burden. To each his/her own. P/s: why talk about Msian? They come to SG to earn 3.3x salary. Its a different thing for them and Singaporean. They can don't come and earn 3.3x.
