Today's job is prepping a SINGER 201-2 sewing machine for cleaning, and a minor restoration I will only be checking and cleaning main driveline parts. The end of the video will show the machine stripped down before beginning the process. Part #1

Nice video. All important to get screwdrivers that fit EXACTLY in these screws. Chapman do a set of bits, expensive, for vintage sewing machines, or I buy some decent bits, Wera, hollow ground and if necessary, diamond grind them to fit better. Important to know when to stop. The last thing you want is some special little screw sheared off. Release fluid for 24 hours helps, a little tighten before untighten. If all else fails, a bit of heat from a soldering iron or a squirt of pipe freezer. Screwdriver or bit holder need to be as long as possible to stop wobble and two hands on a tee bar. Very, very satisfying to feel that first bit of movement. Better than some things I won't mention.

Very good video. The only thing I noticed is the fact that you suggested a small amount of grease on the gears. The manual only calls for oil. Thanks for posting this!

I just found this machine last weekend and so far this has been the most informative and specific video yet. Thanks for sharing. I did purchase it at a pretty pristine state so hopefully I won’t have to remove too many parts to get it cleaned, oiled and lubricated. I was kind of thrown off when you mentioned to put oil on the gears along with the grease. I’ve always understood that oil never goes on gears.

Great video! It will really help when I pick up my 201-2 later today. I did want to ask what type of car polish do you use? Thanks!

I was looking at these machines when this video came out. I found one locally for $100 in original cabinet. Sadly i have no room and too many machines 🤷🏻‍♂️

Do you happen to have a slide plate for one of these machines that would be for sale

A very good video on disassembly on these machines. Great job and camera work. Ive probably asked this before, but what camera and tripod/mount are you using?

Using a Sony ZV-1 camera in 4k and publishing in 1080p this gives me a bit of headroom if I want to zoom in.

I just came across your site --- I have a 201-2 -- from a previous house I lived in -- have not used yet --- would like to go through it -- clean / lube -- If I am going to go this far into it --- is there a few more steps to --- Get It All --- then put it back together? ---- And also --- is there a parts break down -- whether it is one large drawing -- or individual areas showing the break down. of each --- You had a GOOD EXAMPLE of this --- a Washer -- missing under the Thumb Screw for the presser foot you knew --- but I wouldn't have--- Where to go for a break down --- I couldn't tell you if a part is missing or not ---- Really Enjoyed Your Video --- Subscribed to Learn More ------ Thank You ----- Rodney

I just bought a 201-2 ,,, and the plastic screw head is broken off, on the top of the motor where the brushes go, can I buy a replacement?... AND, getting the broken one out might be a challenge. I wonder if I could make a "slot" in it with a soldering iron? or ? something? without causing any damage.? then try and get a screwdriver in the "make shift slot" and maybe turn it out? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.. thank you.

A bit late. The plastic bit is the brush holder and needs to be insulated. Old plastics are resins or stuff like Bakelite or Tufnol. Tend to be very brittle. These plastics don't respond well to heat like a soldering iron. You might have to resort to a destructive screw extractor. You can get generic replacements or I made my own from Delrin. Closest thread was M11 x 1.0mm.
