Was lucky enough to see him right after he left the Drive-by Truckers. It was a small bar in Philly. The cover charge was $5!! We stood RIGHT in front of the stage. Will never forget that. Have seen him a bunch of times since then. He is an amazing human and a brilliant performer.
@@BC08 Listen, I love Stapleton and Childers. I haven't heard of Richie Kotzen, I'll have to check him out. But they are absolutely NOT on the level of Isbell. The only people I know of who I would say are even CLOSE to him are Evan Felker and Julien Baker.
@@loganfisher3431 Define level. Isbell’s vocals are nothing compared to Stapleton’s. Nowhere close, levels apart Isbell’s guitar work is mid. Far from a virtuoso Isbell’s songs are not musically complex. Basic 4/4 stuff with standard structure and simplistic melody What is it about Isbell that justifies such a lofty rating from you? The presentation? The lyrics? The performance we’re commenting under isn’t even good
This was the song that got me to listen to another Jason Isbell song, buy an album, then another . . . I don't do that kind of killing work anymore, but Something More Than Free broke me out of my shell a little bit and let me really feel how much I admire my dad, who gave enormous chunks of his life and his health to a corporation with a factory where his father and his brother worked, then found new ways to make a living and keep contributing to his family when the company abandoned the factory and moved out of town. Honestly, I kinda miss The 400 Unit on this version, but if I had to give a speech on get-out-the-vote efforts, I guess I wouldn't want to follow the full band tearing the place down, either. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I used to work in staffing for low to no skill temp labor and would listen to this on my way to hiring events to remind me of the people I was helping in my job, and why I cared. Thanks for sharing your story.
It makes me so happy that Jason was willing to play the DNC. He has been through more than a lot in his life, and certainly he'll lose fans for this, but I hope he knows how important it is to hear his voice in this setting.
