The song is, to my knowledge, a French song, but I may be mistaken. Anyway the original melody is Italian, about 300 years old. It was composed by Tommaso Albinoni, Adagio G minor, for strings and organ. So it was not originally a vocal piece of music. Adagio is slow (as the name suggests), considered by music lovers the best music ever written. If you don't know the original, please listen to the dozens of dozens of renditions of it on RU-vid.
