I too discovered Li Yugang through this duet with Dimash. I am now a huge fan. I never gave much attention to traditional Chinese music, but now I am entranced by Li. He’s amazing

Li Yugang not a castrato (LOL), but trained in the nan dan role for the Peking Opera. He actually has some beautiful songs in his regular tenor voice.

Li Yugang is undoubtedly very good, I like his voice and way of singing but in relation to Diva Dance, I prefer Dimash's solo performance. From somewhere I heard he is a Chinese style opera singer that does and acts the female parts. Both of these singers are doing their own version of the diva dance and they are doing as it is called a sing off. They are competing with each other like a dance off except singing.

I listened to your Dimash reactions some eight weeks ago when I first discovered him. Since then I’m ocean deep into him, having listened to countless concerts and reactions. Coming back to yours on this performance I realise that it’s been your excellent analysis that imbued me all along with the background to understanding it fully. There is another duet with Tengre, another seasoned Chinese singer, that you might enjoy and enlighten us with your Chinese take.

Dimash has been asked to sing it in China to welcome in the Chinese New Year for the last 3 years (which is a great honour) Each version is completely different (2 are duets) but equally stunning. Li Yugang is a national treasure for China. He is a highly respected man. The Nan Dan role is for man in chinese Opera that plays the part of females. I think it was forbidden for woman to sing opera. In Wikipedia you will find more informations

Dimash is a big pop star in China, so yes he sings more upbest and more love songs. He has thousands of screaming fans at every TV show, concert and performance there. He has been on TV a lot, especially in 2017/18, but as he had been on two world tours in 2019 he had less time. He has lived in Beijing for the past three years and always does spring festival and new year performances. None are on his official RU-vid channel because of copyright but there are lots on RU-vid from his Chinese shows ❤ I think that's a G7, he has sung a D8 for 5 seconds with vibrato and it is quite possible he can go higher, maybe he will shock us again one day ❤

Drunken concubine narrates in dialogue the tragic story between a famous concubine of the Chinese imperial court (Li YuGan in that role) and the emperor (Dimash's role) that's why the thrones on stage. If you want more “east” meets “west” type songs by Dimash check out “Hello” from his Singer 2018 guest performance and “Jasmine” duet with Wu Tong or his solo of “Jasmine New Era”. All his duets are phenomenal... he never outshines his partners but complements them beautifully. Check out “Earth Song” with rapper Victor Ma, “Swan Goose” with Mongolian Singer Tengri and “Ulisse” with Aida Garifullina to name a few.

I agree with you, a great collaboration of their voices. I was really impressed with Li Yugang, and with the traditional Opera. Also Dimash singing Mandarin Pop is great to listen to. Dimash actually performed "Our Love" on the Masked Singer in China. That song has become my favourite. Dimash has quite a few up beat songs in Kazakh, and in English. His first single is called "My Beauty", Dimash and his father made it back in 2012. His first English song to release is 'Screaming".

Whatever that was it wasn’t his highest that in unforgettable day in Gakku concert when he hit a D8 held for five seconds with vibrato. That note was one higher than the highest note on the piano. Wikepidia and vocal coaches since I found dimash a year ago have said dimash has a working 6 octave range. The you tube is saying he has an 8 octave range. He is embarrassed to talk about it. But, look at what you just heard. The low notes were in the first octave and that high note was in the 8th octave. Dimash practices 3 hours a day with or without a vocal coach. Every one of his songs is better than the last. He is competing with himself.

Hi, Max. This is one of my favorite Dimash duets. On paper, it shouldn't work. Yet somehow it does work - beautifully, harmoniously, and insanely well. As fantastic as the whole piece is, my favorite part is the last section where Dimash's ethnic riffs just wrap themselves all around Li Yugang's straight tones in the traditional style. I enjoy imagining their first meeting when they arranged this performance together. They must have had so much fun! Thanks, too, for pausing to look up Li Yugang and better understand his background. It really added to the sense of how seriously you approach these reactions. Well done again!

Dimash did a duet with another Kazak opera singer named Sundet Baigozhin. The song is Tu vas de Detruire. It’s a short video, only 4:33. It is probably my favorite duet he does. Please know there are stage prop pistols as the scene is a dueling match and a shot is seemingly fired. But the whole thing is incredibly beautiful and I haven’t seen anyone else at all react to it.

I think they intentionally contrasted a lot of cultural styles of music here. The “pop”/“cool” entrance by Dimash vs. the Classical Chinese opera style by Li (who sings female roles with the China National Opera). Later there are contrasts between Kazakh traditional and Chinese traditional. I just love this piece.

Hi Max, I can't say I am very found of Bejing Opera but yes it was such a good mashup of the songs, of the styles and of the voices. Not all singers are a good partner for a duett. Some have egos that makes them at least try to overshadow their partner, but never Dimash. He always adapt to his partner and focus on making a great result for us to enjoy.

Please check out Jasmine where Dimash and Wu Tong sang together. It was in February 2018 in new year celebration. This Yu Gang and Dimash combination is remarkable too. I also love Dimash’ performance of “Jasmine Flowers “ with Wu Tong and the one with Tingre, although I don’t know the title of that song. You mentioned more upbeat songs Dimash has performed. “Screaming”, the “Idol Hits” version, is a pop song with, performed live, some surprises in store. I will admit, as a westerner, it took some time to wrap my ears around the Peking operatic sound...but i kept coming back to listen because it was something magical when they combined their voices, as you said. If you think this was magical, I highly recommend Dimash and Tengri singing Swan Goose...the added element of Mongolian throat singers, along with Dimash's ethnic runs (a la sinful passion) is something that must be heard to be believed. Absolutely glorious. 💙

Only the best are brave enough to sing with Dimash.....check out Dimash and Tengi...Swan/Goose...As a Westerner, I am surprised that I am more familiar with Chinese Opera than you...I watch a lot of Chinese dramas....I will tell you the truth and although I love this performance, I am not a fan either..it is right up there with Gregorian Chants when it comes to something I would pick to listen to... never the less...I can still admire the skill and training involved.....

I loved this performance. It was absolutely amazing. After watching this I had to go and check out more from Li Yugang, and I fell in love with his voice too. Dimash has brought so many different artists into my life. Because of The Singer competition, I noe listen to Terry Lin, and Jam Hsiao, you should check them out, they are amazing. What an amazing duet! No competition needed, just pure collaboration with a breathtaking result. I've only heard traditional Chinese opera in film (Farewell My Concubine, more than once) or sung shyly by my Mandarin teacher at university. I don't think I could just listen to it on its own, but in context, and certainly in an amazing duet such as this with Dimash - quite lovely.

In 2006, Li came to prominence after he came third in the Star Boulevard (星光大道), a nationwide talent competition programme on CCTV.[3] His performance in "Farewell My Concubine" (霸王别姬) and "The Drunken Beauty" (贵妃醉酒), both from the famous Peking Opera made him an overnight sensation. He became a highly sought-after performer afterwards. The following year, Li became an unprecedented success when he gave his first solo performance in Beijing: "Where Flowers are Unbounded" (凡花无界).
