Yeah, there's a lot of musical weirdness going on in Hip and it's kinda hard to sort it all out. Mamamoo started their career with a retro style in 2014 featuring songs that harkened back to everything from swing jazz and doo wop to 60's soul, Motown and 70's funk so all those old school influences are in their roots and musical dna. Reimagining elements of musical styles over different rhythms is something kpop does well and I think one of the hidden tricks in Hip's chorus is the use of ska style 60's guitar and horns over the "wrong" beat so you get the vibe of big band jazz and other retro influences that went into ska but in a totally different rhythmic context and it ends up sounding familiar, strange, surprising and intriguing at the same time. Mamamoo does this kind of genre mashup in other songs where they might blend bossa nova, hip hop and pop or or mix r&b and latin pop, etc. Mamamoo is considered to be the vocal gold standard among kpop girl groups and they have one of the most diverse discographies I've ever heard. They seem to be able to pull off any genre with ease and they're always trying new things and surprising us by going in unexpected directions. Leader Solar (the boxer in Hip) is a good example of MMM's versatility. In her solo stuff (each member has a successful solo career) she's done a country song for a kdrama OST that would have made Patsy Cline proud, covers of everyone from Whitney Houston, Eartha Kitt and Peggy Lee to Celine Dion, Nicki Minaj and Avril Lavigne, a cabaret jazz song celebrating the joys of big booty, and her recent solo EP consists of 6 songs in completely different genres ranging from a voguing runway track to a folk song to mix of ballad and punkish rock, 5 of which she wrote or co-wrote the lyrics & music herself. Have fun exploring Mamamoo, one of the most fascinating and talented girl groups from any country or musical era and one of the biggest rabbit holes in kpop. They've released hundreds of songs, several dozen group, solo and subunit albums and there are many, many hours of spectacular live performances available on yt. Fair warning - as moomoos (Mamamoo fans) like to say, Once you Wheein you can't Whee-out! Wheein is the member who played an artist and an environmental activist in Hip. Mamamoo is considered the best of the best with live vocals and top tier for live performances. I saw them in los angeles last year, was incredible. The sing just about every genre, or more of them make every genre mamamoo. Their first pre-debut video Peppermint Chocolate looks like 1940s hollywood glam to an almost disco song, their debut video mr ambiguous straight of of the 1960s and their second video Piano Man and song look like a 1930s speakeasy. Killing voice, immortal songs2 are great videos, Killing voice is Live and a medley of songs, and really shows off their vocal talent as does immortal songs which are covers for that contest but they make everything mamamoo and shows off the talent. ANother great more recent medley is their Mamamoo Live hits Collection from episode 8 of the Hwasa TV show, which has them do two fill songs with a medley in between to a live band. Every song is great to unreal, 400 videos, even their commercial OSTs like woo hoo, is insanely good and for a LG cell phone. I Miss U and Paint me are ballads which are incredible(go for the Queendom versions of I miss you, decalcomanie and destiny(this one is almost US country) and they all have solo albums, Solar(in this MV the dual colors) just dropped her latest a couple weeks ago Colours, which has 3 songs to watch or listen, Colors the MV is insane, Blues and yes it is an actual blues song and But I which is rock and on her RU-vid channel she has But I piano only(she is playing) recommend the MV first then the youtube. On her youtube you will find gems like a cover of Michael Jacksons Man in the mirror and she does have MJs original band and back up singers (originally a charity event they asked her to do) and the other members, Wheein and Moonbyul released albums a couple months ago.
Oh yeah, I just freaking love them too. Their vocals, songs, and live performances are just phenomenal. They’re the most amazing female group I have ever seen.

It showcases their vocals on a whole different level than on the killing voice(even though they kill it in that one too!)

If you really like vocals not just some pretty faces I would say check out the followin Mamamoo songs - I miss you (a very early B side but that they have performed often on live shows) or - Woohoo (a song that they did for a commercial), the first few seconds alone will give you an eargasm) or pretty much anything that they performed before an audience because I swear they are vampires feeding of the audience in a good way, be it in concert or on shows. Try to find their immortal song entries. They were the first group to not only win once but several times and this in a competition that was only for established singers not some one day wonder kpop group which they entered very early in their career and ended up winning several times.
Just found this and saw he did some other killing voice but did he do mamamoo’s yet? Because killing voice for groups exist because of Mamamoo. They wanted to do it but it was only killing verse for k-rappers so they made killing voice with MAMAMOO and set the standard for the show
@@AlexSinclairMusic oh it’s a must since it’s the first one and Mamamoo are the undisputed vocal queens of K-pop and since you like good vocals you definitely need to react to their killing voice and then I strongly suggest their immortal songs medley. Immortal Songs is a competition show where Korean singers/groups compete against each other typically with a guest of honor’s songs or theme. Mamamoo became known for the live performances because of this show since they first appeared as rookies and they won many times and is the female group to have the most wins. Seventeen and Ateez have competed too along with many other K-pop groups and I believe Ateez has the most wins. But yeah first killing voice and then their immortal songs medley (it’s the one they performed in suits at their concert, which is crazy because they did that medley in the middle of their 3 hour concert hitting crazy notes). You’ll thank me later 😊
