Singer Songwriter Reacting to PINK FLOYD "Echoes" in Pompeii 

The late and great Rick Wright. A man of immense talent, soft spoken voice and a kind heart. He is sorely missed.

That's Pompeii Italy which was covered in volcanic ash by the eruption from nearby Mount Vesuvius in 79 ad. They only uncovered it a little over 100 years ago. Mount Vesuvius is the mountain in the background in the very first wide pan shot. It was recorded live that is the sound of their instruments and the sound of their voices. Some of it was done later in studio but this particular version of Echoes was not!

This was recorded in 1971. There were no in-ear monitors and click tracks back then, at least not in their current form. This song was performed live.

This was recorded live in all its greatness, yes. Studio version differs.

In-ears and click tracks are a new thing. Outside of the recording studio where headphones were used for playback tracks and isolation monitoring, Live bands had to rely on amplifiers and/or monitor speakers for live sound feedback, All rhythm pacing was done organically by the rhythm section (drums/percussion and bass players), and all tone pitches (vocally and instrumentally) had to be Naturally on point, no mistakes... it is why so many people today say that music artist of the past were on another level, it is because the HAD to be talented and skilled without any help from computer software which wasn't a thing until the late 90s. You either knew how to sing and play your instrument or you were out of a job, simple as that.

The dispute between Waters and Gilmour was not just those two, it was between Waters and everyone else in the band. It wasn't completely unjustified, Waters had an insane work ethic and a huge vision of where he wanted to take the band. The other guys wanted some time off. I don't blame Waters for his frustration, the problem was he began to identify himself as the rightful owner of Pink Floyd, and when he left the band he tried to prevent Gilmour and Nick Mason, the drummer, from using the band's name. (Richard Wright had already been fired by this point, although he came back when Waters was no longer there.) People come and go from bands all the time, and it's rare for one member to be the sole identity when it has always been a foursome (and a five-some for a brief period.) Waters was an exceedingly talented lyricist, but Pink Floyd was known for more than just their lyrics, and it turned out that Gilmour, once he settled in, wasn't a bad songwriter himself. The bottom line was, Waters couldn't envision Pink Floyd existing without himself, and he never forgave Gilmour for being successful without him.

IMO, Echoes is where they finally found their place in music history. The album has a wide variety of musical tones in the songs, but this is where they started painting visual images with sound. Their greatest single piece of music IMO. A masterpiece! You have got to listen to the entire piece, you will go from your spaceship to a submarine. Thank for covering PF!!

first time anyone had performed in the Amphitheater since 79 AD. There is a hallway inside that has a video of this toady. Dave came back in a solo concert in 2016 s must see ****** Which make him the only person to play there twice since 79.Roger left the group over creative difference. He was a very angry person and hard to deal with, which he later admitted.

That's Richard Wright on the vocals and keyboard. He and David Gilmour provided many of Pink Floyd's most beautiful harmonies. He and David Gilmour trade vocals on "Time" from The Dark Side of the Moon, and he even sang a few of their songs as the lead vocalist ("Paint Box" and "Summer '68" are two that come right to mind). Roger Waters, the bassist, did a number of vocals, and was a primary singer on the albums Animals, The Wall, and The Final Cut, although he sang on other songs here and there too. Yes, this was a recording of the actual filmed performance. There is the second half still to go, and the whole song makes up the second side of the album Meddle, the album (along with Obscured by Clouds) before their monster The Dark Side of the Moon. 3 of these 4 guys from 1971 (Wright, Mason, & Gilmour) performed together in the Pulse songs in 1994.

This is many years before David and Rodger's trouble. this is filmed in 1972. While the trouble is said to have begun to simmer in THE WALL ( 1979 ), the real breakdown occurred in 1982 with THE FINAL CUT. ;).

Kudos to both the sound and video crews for helping make that Pink Floyd: Live in Pompeii concert movie one of the best pieces of 'art' anyone has done in my almost 70 years on earth. I have loved Pink Floyd since the early 70s, but it wasn't until I went "down the rabbit hole" and educated myself about what happened to Syd Barrett that I REALLY got to understand the band and their history. Good books out there about them ....

Singing with David Gilmour is Richard Wright, keyboardist and composer (Echoes is largely his work, as is The Great Gig in the Sky and many others). He was a great singer and it's a bit of a shame he didn't get more opportunities in singing. In Pompeii, Italy, there is an ancient amphitheatre that lay beneath the volcano Vesuvius and was completely destroyed by its eruption in 79 AD. At the time, it was also home to one of the oldest amphitheatres in the world. Only a few artists were allowed to perform there. Apart from Pink Floyd in 1972 (no audience) it was Frank Sinatra, David Gilmour returned in 2016 (two concerts for the public - but only on the surface - the galleries remained empty) and then King Crimson for one concert (2018). No one else has had this privilege.

Andrew Lloyd Webber stole that riff a few years later for Phantom of the Opera. David and Richard were very much in tune with each other. Best friends and musical partners. Roger and David, creatively they wanted different things as Roger took control over the direction of the band. I honestly think Roger was a bit jealous of David, the dude is handsome and a much better musician. He actually played bass for Roger at times, and would tune his bass guitar at times. That’s not dismissing Roger’s talent at all as a songwriter and lyricist and conceptualist. But I’ve always felt he was a bit jealous and didn’t want to give David the credit he deserved

6:04 "their voices are so in sync". Yep. The way their voices fit together was just a wonderful cornerstone of a lot of the sounds of Pink Floyd over the years. (There were many cornerstones... probably more of them than corners to be fair. 😂)

This performance is part of Adrian Maben's movie. So, there were many takes of the various songs in the Amphitheater. Note Nick Mason's sunglasses and the filming behind the speaker stack. As for the feud. It is well known that Roger was very controlling. I think he viewed the other band members as mere session players that could be replaced. Roger asserted more and more control through the later 70s. The Animals album and The Wall album were Roger's creation. But there is no doubt that David's contributions to those albums are what make them great particularly on The Wall album. But if you listen to Roger's demo tape of The Wall and compare it to the finished product. It is obvious that the rest of the band and others were essential in making that album one of their best. The band's final album, The Final Cut was all Roger with Nick and David contributing and often doing so remotely from Roger. By the mid 80s Roger decided to fold up Pink Floyd and end it. However legally he was just a minority shareholder. Nick and David decided that Pink Floyd would carry on without Roger. Roger mistakenly thought he was The Floyd and without him the others had nothing. I think they proved Roger wrong. It's a shame. I wonder how much better Roger's solo works could have improved with the rest of the band involved.

This was Roger’s first time as the lyricist. It was an important step for him. Richard was the main arranger and tempo setter. However he was always under pressure from Roger. Particularly later on, as Roger developed hubris and dominated the later album themes and basic content. This was the main cause of tension as David had played along up to a point. Unfortunately Richard copped it. Originally he was the most proficient musician in the band, before David’s inclusion, as Roger had been a novice initially. But still Richard was also their first roadie too??!! But this event is historic and one of the purest live gigs ever recorded. No audience, no big lighting show as later years of characterised. But just pure individuals integrating with each other as planned. Awesome. Xx

They are musicians extraordinaire working together and complementing each other. It was recorded live. This song is one among some others performed for movie that they recorded there. The others were One of these days, A saucerful of secrets and Careful with that axe, Eugene. All together they were there filming for three days. It became a history.

The studio version of Echoes (on the album Meddle) is also excellent - and incredibly beautiful, thanks to some subtle nuances that didn't get worked into the Pompeii version. And yet for sheer vitality and that totally sick funky groove, this Pompeii version wins! These two versions are quite different, but both are definitely keepers, each in its own way.

Roger basically took over the band, due to his highly creative writing output... TheWall, a double lp, is almost all Roger (conceptually&lyrics, at least), and in the making fired RichardWright for taking off in the middle of making it to go on vacation. The band was broke at the time, after bad investments and high taxes wiped them out, and Roger was determined to get himself, and the band out of the hole. People hate on Roger cuz of his very far-left politics, but it's just one more reason I've always loved him!

They split up for about twenty five years. Bitterly taking shots at each other, suing and counter suing. You may be interested in seeing the last time they were able to be on a stage together as a reunion of sorts. It was a four song set for Bob Geldof's end poverty efforts. If you look up Pink Floyd Reunion Live 8. It's really bittersweet for those of us who are lifelong PF fans.

They say Pink Floyd music is space rock. These guys made a whole concert in Pompeii amphiteatre with only their staff - you can see them in the video - because of the great acoustic of the place. It was in 1971 but the video was published in the next year.

No such thing as 'in ears' back then...Yes it was When the Levee Breaks. The pair weren't not feuding at this stage. They were getting on well. The feuding started after Dark Side and during the recording of Wish You Were Here album which was much later than this.

In 84 after the release of Final Cut, Roger decided to call the band quits. PF by that time had been creatively taken over by Roger who had become a petty dictator. However, David, Rick and Nick decided to keep the band going as they considered there was still music to be made under the Pink Floyd name. The case was taken to court and Roger lost, and thus the boys went on to tecord two more albuns: "Momentary Lapse of Reason" in 87 and "Division Bell" in 94, each followed by two massive live tours and two live albuns: "Delicate Sound of Thunder" and "Pulse". The lost court case and continuation of the band was the origin of the feud. Other issues came along in recent years due to some controversial political positions taken by Roger. He was born a contrarian and he will die a contrarian. David made peace with his demons and lives a quiet and out of sight family life and periodically comes out for a gig under his own name, as Pink Floyd was put to rest when Rick died a few years back. This concert was recorded in 1972. One year later the band would release "Dark Side of the Moon" and catapulted into the glorious Pantheon of Music History.

Roger went on a power trip and thought he was Pink Floyd and no one else mattered. During the Wall album he fired Rick Wright then brought back as fill in performer so Roger had the issue and Dave got tired of it

This performance was 1971......the split came many years later precipitated by The Wall album and Comfortably Numb probably being an important catalyst. Basically......Roger had decided that HE himself was Pink Floyd, and the others were merely HIS over paid musicians. Roger went to the publishers alone and signed a legal publishing contract claiming he alone owned ALL the music and output of Pink Floyd......thereby claiming ALL the residuals etc for himself only. Every member of that band wrote some lyrics, they all wrote or created most of their own music parts. Roger was the main lyricist and wrote no more music than the drummer , Nick Mason. David wrote most of the music and a lot of the lyrics as well. The Wall tells the story before it even happened. Pink is really Roger Waters ......the Wall is basically his own autobiography in music. The Wall ends with Pink plotting to take ownership of all the music and rights and paying the other band members a pittance as hired musicians. This is exactly what Roger tried to do with his band mates.....even firing Richard Wright.....who was then rehired as a session musician because he was needed for the Pink Floyd sound. All other keyboard players sounded different and " wrong". After Roger was defeated , Richard was re hired as an equal band member. Roger left the band declaring Pink Floyd was dead, and their live performances improved no end.

I saw an interview with David. He did not like the wall apart from one or two tracks. He said it was Roger having a bit of a winge. Roger tried to control the band and even asked Richard to not appear on the credits. Now Roger has gone completely off the rails with some of his comments on current events. I don't see David and Roger patching it up. They are worlds apart now.

I would argue that Waters is pompous war, while Gilmour is humble peace. This antagonism produced the greatest music of all time for a period of 10 years (held by the backbone Rick Wright). Inbetween 1978 and 1985, Waters mainly wanted to recite the pain over his father´s death in WW2 (clearly putting his lyrics above the music, which even led to Rick Wright´s leaving the band, practically fired by waters; quoting Wright: "There was no comraderie anymore."). When Waters left the band, he sued the others because he said there can be no Pink Floyd without him - which is rubbish (bandmembers come and go, even when they´re great). After that, Pink Floyd´s success gloriously came back like never before (with Rick Wright) and I think Waters never could stomach this ... while the others clearly kept and keep their distance because they know his demeanors all to good.

As it often happens, the band's principal songwriter begins to assert more and more control over the band and sees the other members as not much more than session musicians. Roger Waters, as the principal songwriter and basically the exclusive lyricist, became frustrated working within a band concept. In this band, Gilmour was the primary lead singer, composed much of the great music ("Comfortably Numb") and keyboardist Richard Wright also contributed great music ("Great Gig in the Sky" "Us & Them"). Roger became difficult to work with and left the band, the others continued on without him. They definitely were better together, but they could no longer get along. Most recently, Roger's uncompromising political views have alienated him from many others as well, but there is no doubt he is a genius poet and songwriter. A tragic story.

You will have to wait 10 to 15 more years to have in-ear monitor. At that time musicians where talented period. And yes that's the live recording. The bubbles are from the volcano, you know the one who destroy a city called Pompeii.

Short version - Roger Waters was a control freak and creative tension, control and direction were increasingly at odds with Gilmour. Wright essentially left first during The Wall in 1979 and the Final Cut in 1984 was the last album Waters and Gilmour were on together. The Final Cut was all Waters. He wrote all the material and wouldn’t consider any other members input. Waters left and Gilmour and Mason brought Wright back and went on without Waters.

We'll probably never know about David and Roger, but bands frequently fall out. I've had 4 and one of the big ones was because I wouldn't sign a deal as it was rubbish. The guys ended up admitting it, but sadly by then one of us had passed away. Life is too short.

Yes getting the kit in and working was an effort but I bet it was dwarfed by the "Red Tape" and "Special Licenses" to play in an historically import site... In ITALY! 😂😂😂 I guess it helps when you're Pink Floyd and the local Mayer is a fan! ❤❤❤

I don't know how accurate this is; but I believe I once read that the reason Floyd split was because Waters was hung up on Syd Barrett and wanted to continue to write music about him while David wanted to move on. That may or may not be true. It probably just came down to creative differences. There is definitely a difference between Waters' Floyd and Gilmour's. If you want a treat; check out Pink Floyd's performance at Live 8. All 4 members reunited for a 4 song set (concluding with Comfortably Numb). If you watch it; at the end you can see how "giddy" Waters seems to be while Gilmour is very stand off-ish. Whatever went down between them was some serious shit that David obviously can't get past. Anyway; great reaction!

The rift is down to Roger Waters EGO and him being a control freak in the most basic terms. He may be talented and and a great lyricist, but that doesn't stop him being a prize prick IRL. By the time of the Wall, he believed HE is Pink Floyd and the others were just session musicians for him essentially, and he treated Rick Wright despicably during that Album and actually fired him for "contributing Nothing" he is like the total opposite of how David Gilmore is as a Human being. Originally that conflict derived great Art and Music but was always going to explode some day.

Most of the "feud" as far as I have heard is Roger´S " overbaring attitude, He was the drive and in large part creator ,By the time they made The Wall the feelling was they were becomming the Roger Waters Band , Roger felt he was not getting enough input from them . ..They say he was domineeering slave driver he says he wanted to get the work done and for it to be brilliant ,

Roger left because him and David are two complete different personalities. Different directions on things. The usual. I love Roger Waters but he is a strong, opinionated personality. I'm surprised they lasted that long together.

You did not finish the song. You stopped listening halfway through. You didn't get the conclusion when all the spirits of Pompeii finally ascended after centuries. Sadly you're the second reactor today who blew it. Why don't you check the time of the video before you watch. It may give you a clue. By the way I didn't waste my time watching because I hate doing something halfway See it took just a glanced at the time to see 17 minutes was not nearly long enough.
