I purchaseD a Singer Touch and ew in 1965, it has never failed me , I have used it for thousands and thousands of hours, I have upholstered many pieces of furniture with heavy material. It has never needed any repairs, I have oiled and cleaned it at regular intervals and treated it with respect. Could never have asked for a better sewing machine.

You now can buy rubber and metal feed dogs for the T&S machines and over the years I replaced my rubber dogs twice. The one thing that I was told by a great sewing machine guy was that the black metal bar, or whatever you want to call it, on the right of the bobbin assembly, and held the bobbin assembly in place, was faulty in design to begin with. This bar had a spring like projection that had the tendency to jump out of position. After I first got my T&S and was frustrated by the spring jumping out of position and causing balls of thread under fabric, I took it to this guy and he took one look at it, unscrewed the black metal bar and replaced it with a new redesigned one for free and I never had another problem with the bobbin again! Once you got used to the wind in place bobbin it was wonderful not to have to unthread everything to wind a bobbin. Unfortunately, myT&S was from the early 70's and the plastic gears are what finally did it in. My SM guy tells me it is not worth fixing because the new gears are inferior. I agree that if Singer had made the T&S with metal gears I would still be sewing with it and Singer's reputation wouldn't have gone down the tubes! If you want a slant shank, ZZ, all metal gears and a vintage machine...look for something in the 400 or 500 series Singers. They are still going strong and hold their value.
@SimplyStitchy
@SimplyStitchy 2 года назад
I think I'm with your repair guy as far as the T&S is concerned. I'm really not sure it's worth fixing the feed dogs on mine... or the bobbin area... which is a shame - they could have been fantastic machines! Thanks for watching! 🙂

I admire your sense of humor. This is my first sewing machine, and I'm grateful to have a reason behind my frustration tonight during the maiden setup. The bottom of the bobbin holder, if installed wrong, lends a nice and metal anvil to put the needle against. A relief, to be sure, that something here is not plastic.

It is important to recognize that there are really two classes of Touch & Sew machines - the early 600 machines with all metal gears and the later 700 machines with nylon gears. The first Touch & Sews (600/600e/603) are comparable in quality to a Singer 401/403, in fact they are practically the same machine only with the newfangled bobbin winder system. If you get one of these today, they are still very fine machines. If you get one of the later models with the nylon gears, it's pretty much a piece of junk - not IF but WHEN the gears crack, it's worthless.
@SimplyStitchy
@SimplyStitchy Год назад
Newfangled... lol. A word that means pointless or useless improvement. That bobbin system wasn't an instant hit in any of the Touch & Sew models. Which is a shame because I quite like it! The early 600 series was arguably more reliable than the 700 series, but all Touch & Sew models have their... quirks. Thanks for watching 🙂

Thank you for this video. My mom had a singer touch and sew. She swore at that thing daily haha. I learned to sew on it and she eventually passed it to me when she got her Bernina 910. So many memories! The funniest thing for me is that it was my intro to sewing machines so I wondered why the others I later experienced were so different (mainly the bobbin shape and winding style) little did I know it was the singer touch and sew that was different!

Loved your video. I bought a singer touch and sew model 750 new. I sew nearly every day and actually used it for tailoring business. It’s still kicking butt. I had to replace wiring harness in 1982 but that’s the extent of repairs. Found same machine at garage sale and bought for $25. It runs perfectly as well. Maybe the difference is between the models.

I just found this video and just had to comment. The first sewing machine I ever owned was a Singer Golden Touch and Sew. It was vintage when I got it but actually taught myself to sew on it. I think by that time, Singer had gone back to metal feed dogs. I loved exploring the cams! I later upgraded to a Kenmore free arm machine. One thing on the bobbins, they were more expensive than the more common sizes.

Thanks to your video I became interested in the 1960s Singer Touch & Sew! Yesterday I bought white & pink 626! I can hardly wait for it to arrive. It requires no cams. Thank you for introducing me to these intriguing machines. The engineering is quite interesting. I own computerized sewing & embroidery machines but am looking forward to trying out the pink 626, getting it serviced by a very meticulous lady who is an expert on vintage machines.

Glad to see you're back making videos. Here's the thing about Singer touch & sews. The very earliest ones, will have all metal gears, and are excellent machines. I know there's a difference in the model numbers between American/Canadian models versus the UK and European models. But for all of them, anything made in the early to mid 1960's are good. Once you get to the late 1960's, and into the 70's. Then, Singer starting making the gears out of Nylon {a hard plastic}. In retrospect, a stupid cost-saving measure from the Singer Corporation. And that's where the problems start to come in. Even so, the Nylon gears that have deteriorated, can be replaced. Replacement parts for these machines are still readily available. All-in-all, they are good machines. Easy to use and easy to thread.

That period in history was the age of plastic tosh. I'm going to have to fix this Touch and Sew up a little before I can see how well she sews. At the moment she's stuck on a zigzag with no working feed dogs. She's had a hard life, bless her. Thanks for watching! 🙂

I have a 603e touch and sew. I think it's one of the earliest ones because all the gears are still metal. I haven't cleaned it up. I've looked at it. I happen to have a set of cams and then I bought another set to finish out what I was missing. I haven't used it. I bought a bobbin case and came with a bobbin so and then somebody else gave me a bobbin so I've got two. I've got quite a few slant feet for it, including a button holer I don't know what I'm going to do with it yet. I look at it every once in awhile. I have a tendency to refurbish my other singer, sewing machines and as far as sewing machines go my Kenmore sewing machines. I favor a lot better. I have a 158.1760 and I like that one a whole lot better

I bought my first Touch and Sew sewing machine in 1974, a Touch & Sew 756. I still use it and love the sound of it as it sews. The stupid feed dogs were replaced with metal teeth feed dogs, yay. I've never heard the T & S machine had a bad reputation until watching your video. In junior high, those were the machines we tried to get first. We loved the bobbin winding inside the bobbin case. Well, I guess I collect old sewing machines since I have four old ones. 626, 756, Creative Touch 1030 and a Futura II Q25. They all work. I had all the rubber feed dogs replaced. I bought myself a Bernina brand in 2007 and that is my Queen machine but I hear that if I ever need parts I'll be out of luck. My son bought me Singer Heavy Duty 4423 for Christmas! I wish he would have asked me. I would have told him "NO!" Well, I'm using that one too! I wish I could find a good home for them but when it comes down to it, I'd be hard pressed to decide which one I'd be willing to part with. I did have a 750 but gave it to someone. I hope she's using it since I regret not having it. It is hard to give them up - and that's just nuts. lol Five Singers and one Bernina. Oh, I forgot! My complaint were the mass produced bobbins would jam if I put in a faulty one which was often. Singer allows foreign makers to use their name but Singer does not stand behind the bobbins. I can't tell you how many replacement new ones I threw away. That really made me mad. What's the use of owning the machine if the bobbins are junk?! I would NEVER buy another Singer made today. My friend bought the Quantum and it's not repairable. Something happened with the needle shaft and the service man told her it couldn't be fixed. I think she said it was only two years old. That's a lot of money thrown away. I wouldn't take the chance on a new Singer. I love your thoroughness of your review, great food for thought. I think you are so right about Singer even though I've been relatively lucky. Thank you for your channel. 💗

I loved the bobbin because once it was wound you were all ready to sew...no rethreading. However I had always wanted the golden touch and sew (the one in your video) so i traded mine in for one. My first machine was a 1974 TOL T&S. Had to have the timing set once a year for the first 3 years she was in use. Back then $80 a pop. Big money then! For some reason she sewed another 10 years without a problem just cleaned and oiled myself. Then a nylon gear broke and no one could get parts to fix her. To my knowledge the plastic gears are still difficult to come by. I did love the machine, buttonholer, stretch stitch, etc. But stitch quality would not create jeans. The fill in place bobbin was interesting, but held very little thread and would have to be filled numerous times to complete one garment. I have a 1990 Janome made Kenmore that has never required a professional service in over 30 years. Still going strong with all metal gearing.

My Gran gave me a TOL Touch'n'sew for highschool graduation in the mid '70s. Other than 3 consecutive annual $80 visits to the shop for timing issues, I loved it! (This was $80 in the 70s - quite pricey - my car payment was $88) The machine was a breeze to use - not at all confusing. It had 2 speed settings, needle position adjustment, 4 step built-in buttonhole, wind in place bobbin, stretch stitch and overcasting stitches. Leaving the zigzag disc in place meant I only changed disc's for stretch stitches and overcasting when sewing knits. Sewing garments and doing upholstery, I had no need for decorative stitches. The wind in place bobbin never once gave a problem for the 14 years that I used the machine. Problems: the wind in place bobbin had to be constantly refilled with each garment as they hold very little thread. The straight stitch wasn't straight enough to make contrasting thread jeans. (This is common with most zigzag capable machines.) The plastic! At 14 years old, a main plastic gear broke and was no longer available for purchase. The machine was dead! Today people are 3D printing replacement gears and the files for those gears are supposedly in the public domain (free). In short, if you are on a tight budget and can pick one up for $10 or receive one free AND you know someone with a 3D printer and someone with mechanical knowledge to service the machine for you - go for it. As much as I loved my original T&S, I'd not want another. Once I had my Kenmore (Janome) with its drop-in #15 bobbin, I understood the "wind in place bobbin" wasn't a time-saver at all, and the frustration of running out of bobbin thread half-way thru a row of top-stitching wasn't worth it. Plus - there's still all of that old plastic......
@SimplyStitchy
@SimplyStitchy Год назад
I love the wind in bobbin because it means I don't have to unthread the needle... That's the part that bugs me on all my machines - having to unthread the needle to wind a bobbin. I'm always running out of bobbin thread halfway through a seam or something. It doesn't matter which machine I'm using. My Brother SE625 is the best where that's concerned. It will stop sewing and tell me - "Your bobbin is about to run out." It's still usually halfway through a seam though! 😆 Thanks for watching!

I have a 646, picked it up several years ago for $20 including the cabinet at Salvation Army. Gears had all been replaced at some point, so I got it serviced and away I went. I actually love that it winds the bobbin in place. I wish they hadn’t gone with those cheap plastic bobbins but otherwise I find it so much easier than other machines! It has a decent amount of bells and whistles which is all I really need. I’m guessing 99% of us don’t use most of the 600+ stitch patterns on the new machines. And the control boards going out in the digital machines is probably on par with replacing nylon gears back in their day. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The Touch and Sew range has suffered more than its fair share of bad press and manufacturer's shortcuts. Which is a shame because I think the machines were ahead of their time. Thank you for this video. I have a green 606 and this is the closest video I found to help me understand this machine. No instruction manual came with machine and there do no seem to be any out there except for 600E. You talk about having to replace the feed dogs and the plastic gears due to breakage. Have you replaced you own or do you have a shop replace the parts? Again, thank you for this video!
@SimplyStitchy
@SimplyStitchy 2 года назад
You're welcome! The Touch and Sew series are all fairly similar machines. The manual for the 600E will be able to give you pointers, you might find the stitch controls are slightly different, but it will give you a base to work from. Feed dogs are easy to replace. You just undo the screws holding them in and swap them out. The hardest part is getting the screws the right tightness. Too loose, they push the needle plate up. So fiddly is my best description for changing feed dogs. Just make sure you get the right set for your machine. As for gears, if they are working OK, don't worry about them. Not all plastic gears break. If they do, it's a time-consuming job to replace them but not impossible. Better still, modern nylon gears tend to last longer than the original ones. Check out Andytube here on youtube. He does maintenance videos on all kinds of older sewing machines. I'm not sure he's changed gears on a 606, but I'm fairly sure he has a video on changing gears. I don't take any machines older than 10 years to a repair shop... in my experience, they've always been more interested in selling me a new machine. I fix my own... or rather my other half does. Thanks so much for watching! 😀

Loved your video. I have a T&S 750.. i bought it 1970 . I loved this machine and used it for years. I'm 73 now and it sits in its cabinet. I replaced the plastic gears myself. I took it to two sewing service men and was insulted by them. They said the only thing it was good for was a boat anchor and said they would dispose of it for me. I grabbed it and came home. I replaced the feed dogs with metal ones and gears. I was determined to make it run. The problem i ran into is the Tension/timing. I took it to another guy who worked out of his garage. He said he adjusted it but for me to not mess with it. It was not fixed and the machine will not sew properly. I love that machine and cant bare to part with it. I have my mother's 648, and when I took it in for service recently, to see what kind of shape it was in, the repair person said that it wasn't worth the cost to do anything with it. I know nothing about sewing machines, just starting to learn to sew myself (not on that machine), and figure I can mess around with trying to get new gears, get it running okay, or see if anyone wants to take it off my hands and do that themselves. I don't know if she loved the machine, but it was the first big gift my dad ever gave her, so it had a lot of sentimental value for her.

@SimplyStitchy Год назад
Is it broken? Have the gears definitely gone? Have you tried running it to see if it will work? My suggestion would be to get some sewing machine oil and give it a good oiling. Then, give it a slow spin. Don't run it on full speed until you're sure it's OK. If the gears are broken, there are videos on RU-vid showing how to fix them. Give Vintage Sewing Machine Garage or Andytube a try. Both are very good at showing how to maintain vintage machines. Failing that, find a better repair man! It's up to you to decide if the machine is worth the cost... not him!

I'm just a newbie when it comes to sewing machines. I've collected great ones and others pure junk. Some times I pick up a machine just to experiment with them. And this Singer's Touch-N-Sew (600 with the press button located on the right side of the machine) is one of them, first off, it is loud, second, I have never spend so much time with a machine when it came to the self winding bobbin trying to make it work right. The tiny hook that engages the bobbin kept deforming the plastic bobbin where it's suppose to engage. I often wonder why Singer didn't engineer a metal bobbins for this machine, (too costly perhaps.) Lastly, the only good thing about this machine was it's cost to me ($12) and I came with a all the attachments including the presser foot, metal bobbin cover, and special tread guide for chain stitching. Wala. Gracias for sharing thoughts on this machine

If the thread under the fabric is nesting, it's usually the top thread that needs adjusting. If the mess is on top, then it's a bobbin problem. Have you rethreaded the top? Gone through all the thread guides? Adjusted the top tension? @SimplyStitchy
@SimplyStitchy 9 месяцев назад
Have you given the machine a good oiling? Your tension issues could be down to a stiff machine. I'd oil the oil ports - the manual will tell you where they are. Most are under the top cover and then there are some underneath too. Be a bit liberal with the oil to start. 40 Years is a long time for a machine to sit so let it soak and then oil it again. Is there any dust or debris hiding in the tension discs? Sometimes the slightest little speck can upset tension.

@SimplyStitchy
@SimplyStitchy Год назад
For most vintage sewing machines, it's usually a good idea to give the 1970s a wide berth. Not all - just most. Having said that, Kenmore sewing machines tend to buck that trend. As far as vintage machine recommendations - it depends on what you want to sew and the features you're looking for. If it was me, I'd go Singer 15 for a straight stitch only machine. Rock solid and built like a tank. So much so that at one point I think Singer marketed it as the sewing machine equivalent of a tractor. For zigzag and a few decorative stitches - Kemnore 158 series, or Singers from the 1960s like the 401. Necchi also make good machines. I'm not really a Necchi person so I can't say if they are durable or not. One thing I do know about Necchi - I've never heard anyone say anything bad about them. Which is something I can't say about Singer.

I bought a used touch-and-sew mainly because I liked the wooden cabinet it came in. When I tried to sew, I broke many needles. I took it out of the cabinet and took it to a repair shop for a tune-up and cleaning I don't think he replaced any of the "plastic" gears because he didn't mention any needed replacing. After putting it back in the cabinet. I broke another needle trying to use it and I haven't sew since. I'm afraid to spend any more on it to repair things. anybody else break a lot of needles with this thing
@SimplyStitchy
@SimplyStitchy 9 месяцев назад
Sorry to hear you had so much trouble. Breaking needles can be down to a lot of reasons. With used machines, there is always the potential for a timing problem. Although, the service guy should have spotted that and fixed it. Then there is the thread getting caught somewhere in the thread path, tension too tight, needle not in right, wrong needle for the fabric, or even trying to push the fabric through rather than letting the machine go at its own pace. (That last one is usually when we are in a rush ;D) Do you have the manual for it? Have a look at my videos on threading a Touch & Sew: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-81fz2KqW2Do.html and sewing with one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4agvZvEUgpM.html they may help you pinpoint something that you've missed. My first sewing machine, purchased early in 1969 was a Singer Touch & Sew. I did quite a lot of sewing on it through the years...sort of the heyday of my sewing. I taught my daughter to sew on it too, although she never liked it. And it was plastic gear failure that ultimately did it in, some time between 1985 and 1990. I used to hate that bobbin. Both the Singer 403 and the Touch & Sews are slant shank machines, so in theory, the feet from one should fit the other. However, the bobbins are different. The Touch & Sew range has a bobbin system all of its own. I think the 403 is a class 66 model so will take 66 style bobbins. You can get parts for the 403 and the Touch & Sew online from eBay or sewingpartsonline.com, or even vintagesingerparts.com. Why not give the Touch & Sew a spin? @@SimplyStitchy Thank you for your reply, and the links to the parts sites. I realized they had different bobbins, but will the box full of black cams fit in both?
@SimplyStitchy
@SimplyStitchy 2 года назад
Depends on the cams. As far as I know, the 403 takes top hat cams that are similar to the ones in the early 600 series Touch & Sews. Up to a point. If your Touch & Sew is a later model 600, like those from 650 onwards, or even one of the Touch & Sew 700 series, the cams, or fashion discs, may not fit the 403. This is due to being a slightly different style. The later style of black top hat cams have a wider center ring and four holes. Earlier black cams have thinner center rings and two holes. Some Touch & Sews use white cams which won't fit the 403. Hope that helps.

Incidentally, some Touch & Sews, mine included, have plastic gears which can and do break. Not all Touch & Sews are as bullet proof as the all-metal ones from the early 1960s. The 700 series from the 1970s is particularly prone to technical issues. Thanks for watching.
