So...you're saying that you HAD TO hurt this person, and now you're heartbroken and confused? No amount of "hearing some peaceful music" will resolve that dislocation until you understand the cause: most likely there was a miscommunication somewhere. Seek to understand THAT, and then do what you can to clarify and resolve it. The things we do that cause harm to other are "sins". Some people are just downright mean; they do things that hurt others on purpose. But many sins are unintentional, or in your case, the result of getting yourself into the untenable position of having to say or do something hurtful because any other alternative you could see would have harmed you. Sins are mistakes, whether or not we recognize them as mistakes when they occur. That doesn't excuse them; we still must correct them, to the extent we are able. Alas, that's not always possible. Some things-most things, in fact-are not undo-able. But where we have caused harm, even unintentionally, we have a moral obligation to ourselves-to our integrity-to make it right if we can. "Make it right" requires three things: 1. Apologize to whomever was harmed by our actions...publicly if the harm caused embarrassment or loss of reputation. This is restitution for intangible property loss-hurtful, unkind, or untrue words uttered to or against the person you've harmed. (See caveat, below) 2. Make restitution for any damage. That's right; actually cover the co$t of the harm you caused, to whatever extent that's possible or appropriate. "I'm sorry" doesn't cut it when you've caused someone a loss of money or other tangible property. If you caused someone a loss that money can repair or at least mitigate, do it. If you don't, you'll carry an equivalent "spiritual" loss until you do. 3. Resolve not to repeat the mistake. It does no good to keep making the same mistakes over and over again. You're better than you think you are. Make the choice to BE better. In the meantime, mistakes happen. Take responsibility for yours, and you will make the world a better place. CAVEAT: The apology comes first because without it, you can't correct anything. Of course, that requires admitting you screwed up, with no excuses. If you want to say, "...but I didn't intend to hurt you", that might help, but it had better be true. Your subconscious mind knows when you're not telling the truth, and there's a price to pay for that, whether you recognize it or not. Admitting your mistake and saying "I'm sorry" is actually more important to you than to whomever you've harmed. Fessing up is the only way you can prove to yourself and others that you didn't intend to hurt them. People who harm others are generally regarded as assholes, which makes it harder for them to find others who will cooperate in their pursuit of happiness. Reputation counts. But proving to yourself that you didn't really mean to hurt them is far more important. You can rationalize it all you want, but if you don't even have the courage to admit you screwed up-even if it was unintentional-your mind will know that at some level, consciously or otherwise. That's what is known as psycho-emotional "baggage", and the difficulty of carrying it only increases over time. None of this is mystical gobbledygook or touchy-feely psychobabble. It's all practical stuff, firmly rooted in principles of stabilized interaction with others, which starts with stabilizing yourself. You can't do that if you're heartbroken and confused. Your primary responsibility is to stabilize you, and that means clearing all the red off your ledger. 😎
