vocalist and musician here! it's actually not the type of headphones it's how well you can pick out the notes of the music and how comfortable you are with your own voice. for me i always go noise cancelling so I can't really hear my own voice (because i feel the note i'm singing). my takes are soooo much better with noise cancelling because i hear the song so much better

From personal experience: I'm in a collegiate a cappella group and we record a few songs every year or so. The recording engineer usually recommends wearing his high-quality, noise-cancelling headphones with one headphone ear on (to listen to the MIDI/recording) and one ear off (to hear yourself sing) while we record our parts, and he keeps the volume at a pretty medium level for the playback. I was recording a part of the song and accidentally put both ears on and stopped after 2 or 3 seconds because of the looks of horror and confusion on the faces in the room around me after singing the notes completely wrong. I re-recorded the section with the one-on, one-off approach and was just fine, but I later tried again with both ears on and my pitch was again horribly innacurate. A few of my fellow group members tried putting both ears on and had no trouble, and some of them even preferred the two-ear approach like Roomie. Others struggled similarly to me. From our abbreviated 'experiment', it seemed that those with many many years of formal vocal training and choral performance were more accurate with both ears covered than those with music backgrounds of less experience focusing on pitch accuracy. Needing your ear to adjust your vocal pitch does not make you terrible; if you do it accurately, it's a skill and is much much better than what most people can do. However, more vocal experience leads you to have better "internalized pitch", which essentially operates as muscle memory, and improves with increased practice focusing on pitch accuracy. When you have great internalized pitch, you can hear something in your ear, immediately know how it should feel to sing it, and make that sound confidently and accurately without needing to hear yourself that clearly. Basically: 1) You can definitely hear yourself with noise-cancelling headphones as he said but that can be drowned out easily by the song audio 2) Gabby definitely cranked the volume WAY UP but I don't think the pitch trouble was exaggerated. There were a few times I sang 'accurately' but in the wrong key with the correct voice jumps because I thought I was correct but couldn't hear myself to correct key. 3) Roomie is an experienced vocalist (and much more experienced than Gabby) which explains why he had very little trouble even with high volume and no tuning correction at the end 4) The headphones definitely have some sort of impact, and that impact varies based on volume of playback and internalized pitch.

When i was younger, i listened to music with my headphones in my car with my family, but didnt think that they are not hearing what i hear.. so i sung the songs i heard and my poor parents had to listen to it for hours, they were nice not to say anything about it until i was so annoying they hid my headphones from me

When I'm in my car, I sing well if I can hear myself as opposed to when I have the music blasting and can't hear myself.
