Thanks for the videos and especially the design. I made one but had trouble finding the right sized pin, I even went down to my local hardware store and rummaged through all his drill bits without finding the right size, so I filed a piece of aluminium and now it works fine. Not sure if or how to post photos on here so will email a couple to you.

I have just learnt a very valuable Lesson. I made your jig,,Then spent the next 4 hours trying to figure out what was wrong,joints were all over the place,some tight others loose,it didn't make sense,I had used the same 10mm ply for the Finers on the top rail.. Finaly got round to measuering my locked in fingers,,they must have been off 2 different boards.?.The varied as much as 10 thousanths of an inch,I had loaded them mixed up,unknown to me.. Just shows as the old saying on use one Ruler on a project also only use one piece of Ply to make these type of joints,,Ahh Well..lol.

Hello again.....been thinking about the dovetail version of this......have a look at this...(although it's really interesting go straight to 5:42).....I'll leave the rest to you!!! 😀 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mMDNgFqyBLo.html

+Stuff of Lard A dovetail version is on the cards but not for a while. To be honest, I have little need for dovetails at the moment, I consider them more of a 'fine' woodworker skill, one which I certainly don't have! When I have a need to use the joint, I'll see if I can think up a way to do so with the jig. Slightly on topic, I just posted a video which shows how to use this jig to make Angled finger joints which I think id pretty cool too. Cheers, Mario www.thewoodfather.com/thewoodfather/making-an-octagonal-tray/

+Mario Cappellano (The Woodfather) no need to tell me I watched it yesterday (I'm in Wales)....very good but, as you say, somewhat too good for what I'll ever need. I've built and used your 'standard' jig (thanks for the plans by the way) and am in the process of swapping the softwood blocks for acrylic blocks and mounting them on a threaded bar. I also wonder whether I would actually use a dovetail version but hey it's a challenge. It's your fault I'm having trouble sleeping!!!!! 😀.......keep up the thinking!

THANK YOU - I just took a break form working in my shop starting to make a 'traditional' box joint jig. Sat down and your video came up on my PINTREST. This is a much greater plan; easier, faster and gives flexibility on the various sizes without the hassle of making a lot of set-up changes. Keep the NEW IDEAS coming. Again, thanks from North Carolina!

Mario, thank you for the plans . I made the jig last night and used 9mm ply blocks 1" X 1.5" as the box spacers. And this eve i made my first box using the jig, and the fit was great. The only change i made was to fit a captive blot in the end and secured the box spacers with some 10mm threaded bar screwed in and a piece of alloy angle to hold them in along the jig. Thank you once again.

Mario, Thank you for sharing your jig design. I built a homemade table saw using a skill saw so I do not have a stacked Dado blade. Your design is perfect for my needs and I just completed your jig using scrap wood. The only mod I added was to include a bolt on the left side as you describe to lock the spacers in place. I created 3/4 in and 1/2 in spacers.

Thanks for the follow-up. This is a neat technique. I think I like the look of it with all of them the same size, but I could see some applications where this would look cool too.

+Bruce A. Ulrich Cheers mate. I used this technique on a small box I made a while ago, it never got sanded and polished so I didn't take a picture, I might make a couple of nicer ones and show them off.

+Mario Cappellano (The Woodfather) I'm in the middle of making this. I'm having trouble finding a bolt or something that is the exact size of the kerf. I didn't do triangle supports...I just left them as squares. Easier for me to clamp...don't have a pocket hole jig. ;)

Great job Mario ! I'm actually making mine. What kind of blade would you recommend ? I mean : how many teeth should have the blade ? Thanks in advance for your response. Stephan from Belgium
@woodfather
@woodfather 7 лет назад
Hi Stephan, honestly, I don't know! I still have the standard blade on my saw, I think it is only 36tpi which is probably too low, but I've never used a nicer one to compare it to. Works ok for me. I would build the jig and key to match the blade which you use 99% of the time on your saw, that way you don't have to waste time changing the blade each time you want to use the jig.

Hi Mario, greetings from Zagreb, Croatia :) I've been looking for months to find appropriate and affordable jig but till today with no success, almost every one of those required dado blades and like you I didn't want to spend almost 200$. Finally your excellent design, so simple yet so efficient, inspired me to start making one of my own, as soon as this annoying flu leaves my body. Once again many thanks for sharing this ingenious plan and videos. As soon as I finish my jig will send some pictures to you, but please keep in mind that my woodworking experience is just a couple of months old ;) Looking forward for more ideas and projects from you, Best regards, Dario

Dado stacks are not technically illegal over here, but it IS mandated by the EU that the blade on a saw must stop in something like 5 seconds. With the extra mass of a dado stack, this needs a big brake which is subject to wear. It also stops the blade with such force that there is the danger of the nut coming loose from this large change in inertia. As a result of all of this, manufacturers take the easy option and only allow a single blade to fit on the arbour, so their brake can be much weaker. I have seen Dado stacks for sale here in the UK, but finding a saw for them to fit on is the hard part! P.S. Great design and plans... I'm building it in the next few days. Muchos gracias!

I am trying to build this jig. I like it a lot. Being tremendously slowed down by all the rain we are having here in Texas. I don't have a workshop so have to work outside. I want to build bee hives using 12 inch stock. Will this jig work for the wider stock, or should the jig be built wider? I am also unsure how you place the pin? Thanks

a longer base would stop you needing a piece of mdf or a ruler to stop it dragging ..... ie have the whole jig set halfway down the base

@@woodfather I have some projects in the works. Making some small walnut and maple box jointed boxes. The heat of summer slowed me down and a CNC machine. HA! I have been making CNC stuff and learning about that. This will make these box jointed boxes even better with personalized stuff designs and text and such. All I have made with the box joint jig is utility boxes about 8 of them out of 1/4" hardwood plywood of various sized fingers playing around. Can't wait to finish up those boxes when it cools down a bit.

The best box joint jig I have ever seen; simple, precise and versatile! As for finding a correct sized pin -if nothing presents itself one can buy a drill bit in the correct size, drill bits are available in increments of 0.05mm or so. Or one can beef up a too small pin with scotch tape until it fits. Thanks a bunch for the plans and the video!!

+Mario Cappellano (The Woodfather) Finally replying here... I made it with some minor modifications; Instead of drilling and putting a pin of correct size in the hole I cut a slot in the wood on the table saw and made a hardwood "tongue" that is glued in the slot. I also added clamping bolts to keep the wood in place whilst cutting and a thumbscrew to keep the "dominoes" in place on the tray. That jig will be used regularly for many many years to come!!

GALAGA!!!!!!!!!! My favorite. Are you selling those? The jig is very cool. I like that you don't have to make anything other than the blocks to change sizes. Seems like you could put this on a router table and use it to make dovetails as well.
@woodfather
@woodfather 9 лет назад
Yes I had someone else mention dovetails, I might try it one day. Galaga is an absolute gun game! I will be selling these in Australia but first I want to get the production costs and method down so I can batch them out. Too slow and expensive at the moment but this jig changes that.
