I always give the nuc a couple of shakes of nurse bees also since all the foragers leave. You can't have to many nurse bees. Have you ever tried putting a notch or two around the cells with eggs. I tried it right away and they just fixed the notch. Probably didn't realize they were queenless the first day. That's hive is a good hive that you would want to propagate. Thanks for the video.
I usually don't give them a shake but I do try to give them 3 good frames of capped brood and have plenty of bee's on the frames to cover the brood. I find that a 3 frame split turns into a good nuc of bee's once the queen starts laying. I never tried the to notch the frame. I just figured they know better than me.
Wow shat Queens a laying machine, looking great. What to you typically go into winter with, do you run a honey super on all your deeps? Thanks for sharing, have a great season.
Thank you for watching. Yes all my production hives keep 1 super full of honey and what ever I can get them to pack away in the deep also. Some of my splits will get the same thing and some it depends on how far they get this summer. Good luck with your girls this summer.
Thanks for your videos! I'm a second year beek and did my first split last week. I know theres lots of variables but in general the original hive u make a split with...will they produce a good amount of honey in spring? Or maybe fall flow will be better for honey? They are a very healthy hive
Thank you for watching. In most cases yes my first wave of splits will get the fall flow. It also helps that I have drawn out frames to give them to give them a boost. My second wave of splits I only want them to build up to a 5 over 5 nuc going into winter. It also depends on how big of a split you make. I like 2 or 3 frames because it helps with swarming and still gets me a good honey crop from the original hive and I can go back and make another split in a month and that should hold them over the summer till the fall flow. This works for me in my area and might not work for everyone. I hope this helps and good luck with your girls this summer.
Thank you for watching. I did this time but you don't have to. All the nurse bees will stay with the brood and the foragers will return to the original hive. So if you make sure there is plenty of nurse bees in the split you can keep them in the same area. If you get a lot of foragers then you will have a hard time and probably just have an empty split. I hope this helps.
Thank you for watching. If you take the queen with the split and she has no place to lay she will swarm or just shut down and you don't want that. If you are running 2 deep and have an excluder put it in between the 2 deeps and go back in 2 days and see what box has eggs. That should help you find her. I don't recommend it but you can shake all the bee into one deep and put on the excluder and put the frames you want to take for the split above and over time the bee's will pass through and cover the brood and then you will know the queen is not going with the split. I hope that helps.
