Single Coil Pickups In Series (Humbucker Mode) Demo

Here is a demo of single coil pickups wired in series.
Single coil pickups when wired in series tend to have a Humbucker like sound to them and whilst they don't sound identical they do sound very similar.
I created this video to give others out there a taste of what single coils in series sound like as I have not seen any other demo videos out there.
Hope you find this helpful.
By all means leave a comment and please subscribe.
Have a great day,
Paul.

Glad I've modded my partscaster with her pups in series like Brian May, not finished yet but that sounds a lot less anaemic than parallel. Cheers man.

The best video I've seen on topic. I would like to be interested in parallel wiring that you have used. Can you leave me the scheme??? Thanks!!

I'd love to do this to my Charvel DK24. The first time I heard the Ibanez AZ Tom Quayle signature, which has the switching standard, I knew I wanted it. Great video, thanks.

Thanks for this video Paul! I'm gonna modify my old Aria Pro II CS-250 (an SG copy from the 80's) - gonna replace the humbuckers for some Mojo humbucker sized Goldfoil Pickups and I'm gonna add an series/parallel switch and an In phase/out of phase switch like on the Fender Baja Telecaster. It's gonna be a real slide machine!

Greetings Paul! Health and strength! Thx for your good works and Blessings you give! Plz, make a very close up vid, ( coz my eyes are not to sharp seeing any more) from the way how to wire a little switch device on a strat to get activate the tele sound and all three pickups (7way tone). Im too much ready with my Iron, led, switch device. tools etc. But couldnt find any video here in the RU-vid that was close enough for me to see and understand to way how to just step by step do it. Thanks for your presents and keep uP the good works Bro! 1blessed Love. Bless

Hey Pau! I really like the way this sounds and have been contemplating on doing it for a while. The guitar I have is a 97 Olympic white squire protone with the Seymour Duncan ssl 1 in the neck, ssl 1 (rw) in the middle, and ssl 5 in the bridge. It's currently wired with the tone 1 controlling the neck and middle pickups. And the tone 2 for the bridge specifically. It's a dual capacitor (.022uf) set up and the tone pots are wired in parallel. How would I go about wiring it to have the option of the neck and middle pickups in series with a push pull pot while keeping the existing wiring the same (without adding any toggle switches or having a blender pot)? Also, can this wiring design have the option for a treble bleed circuit? At some point I may switch out the ssl 5 for a JB jr or the hotrails depending on how the series wiring sounds. I've had the hotrails before and it is a very nice pickup...as well as the ssl combinations. Since there are two tones wired in parallel. Can I use a push pull pot in the tone 1 position, as only want to use the neck and middle pickups for the series?

Man that sounds awesome! Has a fatter sound to it! Like it a lot! Guess you need a push pull switch and do a little rewiring? Btw, love your playing...going from the chords into leads. I'm definitely gonna work on that!

Hey Paul, really great video, thx! I’d like to ask you, would it be possible to use 1 push-pull switch and normal 5 way selector and wire strat so that in both 2. and 4. positions would be parallel/series - depending on the pp switch position? If that’s possible, would you mind sharing schematic? I’d really like to try it.. thank you!

Thank you. This is the demo I've been looking for. In all honesty, I have to prefer the standard, parallel sound as it maintains the 'transparency and clarity' associated with the Strat I've heard on countless recordings over a 50 year period. I own a Gibson 335 and when I want a Humbucker tone it's perfect but, owning 2 Strats, the 335 will never do that devine 'jangle' chord sound. I appreciate I'd still have my standard Strat tones with the mod, but the *wiring and soldering effort involved in series transforming isn't worth my time*. I was just curious, and your video was perfect for me. Good job, mate.

Not many demos around, but a lot of people say 2 single coils in series sounds "muddy." I think that may be because Strats have 250k ohm volume pots. Humbuckers usually use 500k. Lower resistance lets a little more of the high frequencies cross to ground. So higher resistance on humbuckers gives it a bit more treble bite. A single coil with 500k sounds too bright. A humbucker with 250k sounds too dull - or "muddy" - and there, we're back to the beginning of having two coils in series sounding "muddy" on a 250k pot.
@mafw5572

I tried it, still muddy, but good, what worked for me is one normal single coil, and the other a cheap brighter one, so it sound a little bit more neutral, bit muddy tho, and have a true split. With 500k didn't worked that well for me, it have that single coily sound, but works whit 330k or something in the middle

This is what I was looking for. My pickups seem to be too bright. Series wiring should do the trick. Thank you

Lower your pickups. Height affects a lot of tone or get a capacitor that's bigger

Brilliant. Every Strat should have this. Would put the Strat/Les Paul debate to rest. Plan on doing this on my Yamaha Pacifica with a P90 in the bridge. Do you have a wiring diagram available?

@BadMotivator66

would it work to have a push-pull that basically give me a humbucker tone in my SSS strat? i want the bridge n middle to be in series so it's basically a humbucker, or middle n neck. would that be possible? i love my new strat, but i'm all about versatility and sometimes i need humbucker growl! thanks, very cool vid :)

Bad Mouth Men Absolutely. The Guitar in the video actually has three push pull pots. The volume control pulled out selects neck and middle pickups in series. Of course its not exactly the same as a humbucker due to the spacing between coils but it sounds very humbucker like and also cancels the hum if the middle pickup is a reverse wound version.

great video, thx. I have a slightly different question. I own a Godin lgx III with 3 duckbuckers. Can I apply the same principal on bridge and middle. Note the duckbuckers I have are the old generation with 3 wires and wired internaly in paralel? Please give me advice.
@PaulGrahamGuitarst
@PaulGrahamGuitarst 8 лет назад
+D Ishmael You definitely can wire them in series to give a humbucker like sound. You just need to work with the white wire from one pickup and the red from the other.

+Paul Graham (Guitar) ok, so I worked out a scheme where I can get 1: bridge+ neck series 2: neck sc only -middle interferes a little 3: Bridge SC only - neck interferes a bit 4: bridge+middle in series 5: all in series. If anyone is interested in the paperwork I can draw a diagram and link. thanks again.

If I would put the bridge single coil and middle single coil pickups from a strat next to each other (basically ducktape them together) and wire them in series I would get a normal humbucker, right?
@PaulGrahamGuitarst
@PaulGrahamGuitarst 8 лет назад
+TheDarkmore No not quite. The two coils in a humbucker share a magnetic field with one coil having the south pole and the other coil the north pole. The coils are also reverse wound so external noise when it passes through the coils cancels out but the coils reinforce each other when the magnetic field is affected by the vibrating string. The Strat middle coil is reverse wound and magnetic polarity but their would be some interaction with the shared magnet of the humbucker.

Darel Robbie Robertson from The Band moved the middle pickup next to the bridge pickup on his strat and wired them in series. That plus the bronze coating on his guitar made it sound very cool

Humbuckers are wired in parallel
@LiamD613
@LiamD613 4 года назад
Ryan Lewis They CAN be wired in parallel if you have a 4 wire humbucker. With a regular 2 wire humbucker though, the output of the first coil is connected to the input of the second coil.
