In this video I discuss and demonstrate some single, double, and triple tonguing. This technique enables players to articulate notes faster. This technique, whilst demonstrated on a trombone, works equally well on all brass instruments, and even woodwind instruments too.

Trent, it's amazing. Your story is exactly like mine, (I'm a slow single tongue person,) except you have put in much more practice and sound great. I'm still struggling with playing fast passages but I am now determined to practice the double tonguing technique. I play in a community band and "get by" by playing every other note, letting the other trombones cover for me. Perhaps in the next year, if I dedicate myself to more practice, I can participate fully. Thanks again for sharing your insight. (Pennsylvania, USA)

I too had a slower single tongue than my peers and was yet another reason to learn and develop my double and triple tongue. What got me the really comfortable with almost any tempo is replacing even slower musical lines with double tongue (rather than single tongue) so that there can be an overlapping of the two articulation types. Regarding triple tongue, people seem to be proficient at both variations ("ta ta ka" and "ta ka ta"), so it seems to mostly be preference.

Hey Trent, As you may remember I wanted to learn a brass instrument. Well, now I am. I recently obtained a marching baritone horn so I can march it. Do those skills (besides the piston fingerings) transfer to the trombone? What about trumpet, euphonium, and tuba? Also, can you do a video specifically about the Baritone horn?
@brospros6327
@brospros6327 8 лет назад
Well from experience it's easier to switch from tuba and euphonium(basically baritone) VERY easily but from trumpet your switching from treble clef to bass though fingerings are all the same, the clefs are what makes the transition from trumpet to tuba very hard plus you gotta loosen or tighten your lips depending on the mouth piece hope that helps

I can tongue pretty quick, also I have mine split and can move either end independently, perhaps that could be used to go faster? I suppose it helps with certain types of tonguing.. And I really am double tonguing. I don't own any brass :-( have some woodwind, percussion and stringed instruments but not aquired any brass yet, what would you recommend as a first? I imagine the trombone being more difficult due to the slide, I'm learning to play the violin at the moment, perhaps dividing my time further isn't a good idea for now? And another instrument where I struggle to find the notes.. Would you say finding notes on the trombone is difficult for a beginner, even with previous experience playing other instruments. I can dig it! Dig it, dig it dig it, dig!

Hey, do you or anyone else have any tips on tone? I'm going to be first chair trombone next year, and the major flaw that has been with me for the past four years is my tone. Now, my Solo and Ensemble judge told me I have a bright tone, which I kind of understand. He also recommended a bigger mouthpiece, but that didn't help yet. So I'm just wondering if there is something big that I'm doing wrong to not sound like everyone else. Thank you in advance for any help!

Try listening to a trombonist on RU-vid who's tone you want to emulate and try to have his tone in your head when you play. Although it sounds rather crude as a method it really helps to have a mental "image" of what sort of tone you want

It is weird for me because single tounging is easy for me but my tongue stumbles when double tounging. I will still work on it though

This has absolutely nothing to do with double tongueing but I can hot the second C above the staff with a normal trombone. I think it's a tenor.

"ta-ka-ta" is much easier than "ta-ta-ka" for me, the triple tonguing method might just a matter of personal preference but idk you're the expert lol i probably just suck

Then you do ta twice in a row which is bad. Ta ka ta ta ka ta ta ka ta.
@EnglishTMTB

Ummm you do "ta" twice in a row whichever way you do it with triple tonguing, "KartoffelMann21"... Generally, it depends on the music which is easiest - sometimes TTK is easier and sometimes TKT is easier.
