Single phase (1 phase) and three phase (3 phase) electricity are cornerstones of AC electrical systems. Seth So, Power Systems Experience Center Engineer, explains how both systems operate.
Starting off with the fundamentals, Seth discusses how both 1-phase and 3-phase systems operate using AC power. The different amounts of phases in each system and how that affects wiring schemes for both electrical systems.
Seth goes on to explain
• how residential settings will be fed by a single-phase transformer in what is known as a split-phase system
• why commercial applications requiring 1-phase and 3-phase power can use a 3-phase wye transformer (spoiler alert: it’s the neutral wire)
• applications also use 3-phase delta transformers for higher voltage and can include what’s known as a high-leg delta
• the neutral wire plays a role in balanced loads and unbalanced loads
• that depending on applications, loads will require different voltage levels
Finishing the video, Seth describes how industrial, commercial and residential loads will require different voltage levels and examples of all three.

Thanks Seth. This is exactly what I needed to know. I now understand the layout of my circuit breaker box, and what I need to connect with a machine needing single phase 208-240V. I was getting confused if I could use the B leg on a delta transformer configuration, since the voltage to neutral was 208 instead of 120... After consulting the machine specifications, I got the answer... (yes). Thanks again!

Fantastic video. This made sense out of my mysteries, and gave me more to investigate. Thank you, 208/120

Thanks for the informative video. Kindly talk more about that split phase L-L in residential applications....if you can explain why it has no neutral and why it is single phase with two hots....

@Eaton What happens if you use 3 phase cable and make 3 single phase outputs. In those situation if you have 3 devices what is worst case scenario for electric current flowing through neutral?

In dc 3 phase power supply the phase can be precidely controled by 3 separate timers so finner details like MRI system or Data enscryption is very precise and accurate and light control and process had no resistance no heat lost

when you talked about single phase current running on 3 phase system you did not show current with 120deg difference instead you show 180deg difference. My question is how three currents with 120deg difference move in neutral

Don't forget full bridge rectifier , half bridge rectifier and crest current and flowing trought karma current is scary

Single phase supply can be able to feed 3-phase loads.

Capacitor less resonate than inductant so the solid state power supply system can better in all system than coil problem in relays and transformers. Nearly 80% intermitant problem be eliminate if switch to solid state components and easier diagnodtic and improve safety and liability even 3 phase can work better with 3 phases because from same battery split into three timer then magic happen without unexpected
