Finally harvesting Potatoes in 2022 with a Single Row Potato harvester. As with most farm equipment some tweaking was needed to make it actually work. What a time saving device, no more hours upon hours of digging out potatoes by hand.
These potatoes were planted, and harvested using AgOpenGPS.

I also purchased a Chinese potato harvester like yours. I found the same issues with mine, including misalignment of welded parts. I added washers as well that made a huge difference. The universal joint fell apart after about 75-80 hours of digging. Lesson: you get what you pay for. It was a cheap alternative for me that did do the job in the end, albeit with some time out for repairs.

Every moving, pivoting point should have a grease zerk so it can be lubricated and not wear parts out. That would make it last even longer. Maybe a project you can do over the growing season. If you don't want to put grease zerks in for every moving point, then maybe before harvest apply a large glob at the moving points. This would give you plenty of time to think of a way to prevent them from rolling inbetween the rows where your tires go. Or, just pick them up after each row before going down the next row and running them over.

I'm sure when you imagine yourself adding all these grease everything goes very well for one that requires drilling all the way through weakening your material and I can tell by this guy's video he's not exactly super knowledgeable about the physics of things no I'm not positive about that. Anyway the worst idea is to think you're going to add grease fittings like talking about it. But I'm a big fan of Greece and a lot of people are going to show up and say well it's going to attract dirt but the dirt will collect more on the outside where it can get on the the dictation is making this I have not been able to find it go get a very good Grease Lucas extra duty synthetic green greased rated for permanent or another synthetic or even Lucas read take it apart grease everything and then it's not something everyone will want to do in my old age I might not be doing that you're really not going to wear out your potato digger I don't think I mean if I were having to add washers sure I would be greasing what I disassembledI'm big on lubrication I even get a zep spray bottle you know the big bottle like Windex except jumbo size I put motor oil in that thing and use it to squirt oil all over moving stuff oil and dirt polish a grease and third polish it lasts a lot longer than just dirt by definitely when people say grease attracts dirt you don't want to worry about that you go ahead and lubricate your stuff don't pretend neglect is I grow a lot of potatoes too

I bought it in February, on the day of the mass invasion of Ukraine. At that time it was $2700cdn plus tax. I had to go to Osler to pick it up as delivery was extra. Then had to wait a few months for it to come from china. There are places that sell small potato equipment in Alberta but the quote for the same style harvester in Alberta was $6500 at that time. Prices have gone up since.

@potatofarmer

$3K Canadian of which half is the tablet and dock, including an Emlid M2 with survey antenna for RTK base station. That is the parts price I could get them at 2021/22, and I was trying to spend money on it. Wanted a trimble cfx750 or better experience and got it. Compare at $60K+ USD per Tractor for JD Starfire with RTK. There is ROI in DIY.

Hello, how deep do you dig?
@potatofarmer

About two inches below the base of the hill. The potatoes are in a hill, so its not really digging in into the ground that much.

@kudlabartosz 4 месяца назад
After digging, do you check somehow if there are some potatoes left under this 2 inches.... ? Or you don't bother. @farmer I'm sorry for maybe stupid questions but I'm a newbe 🙂
@potatofarmer
@potatofarmer 4 месяца назад
@@kudlabartosz good questions. The first time using the digger went back through the rows a second time, and found only a handful of smaller than golf ball sized ones left behind. At the end of the year used a cultivator to check deeper but there was only a couple misses. In total less than one hills worth of potatoes was left out of 300hills , I miss potatoes more digging by hand.
