Gavin, I've been watching your videos and learning from them for well over 10 years. It's interesting to see the differences and similarities in your videos from then until now. I'm pretty sure I learned how to do water drop photos from you, and a bunch of other 'fun-to-do' shoots. Thank you for over a decade of entertainment!
Oh my! I learned a lot with this video! I'm so happy with all the photos that I will be able to take with the few accessories that I currently own. Your explanations are clear and concise, and make sense, so they're easier to remember. Thank you!
Great tutorial, as always. How do you determine the maximum size softbox a speedlight can use? BTW, are you using a new video setup in the studio? I like the camera movement.
Nice job, studio photography with speed lights in my opinion is incredibly useful. Dialing a 600watt main down for these would be difficult. I also have used speedlights outside at night using street lights and lit commercial windows as a background. Fun stuff.
Oops! What do Messrs Norton and Miranda say? The modifier should be over the tall leg. Marks lost for that faux pas, Gavin. And ... no mention 'below' of the blower - a Ryobi 18V ONE+, I think.
After have been watching a Gavin video is before the next one, can’t wait for it. 😅 Awesome hints, lovely models, straight forward and as bonus super entertainment! Guys, love you all ❤
Great to silence the nay-sayers who say we cannot use speed lights with big modifiers. Nice to see Jade again - super hair. I now think the three most essential grip items Gavin has for a small home studio are: C-stand; smoke machine; and small leaf blower. Well done to all !
Thanks for all that effort Gavin. But isn't it a waste of time buying from Adorama as it's based in the US? I mean what with import taxes and shipping fees that I presume would have to be paid and the time for delivery? Thanks for your help.
On a separate note, aren't you based in the UK? I ask cause I don't believe Adorama ships here (or EU countries) as we don't appear on the isted on the Internation shipping destinations in their drop down list. Such a shame we don't have an Adorama store over here or at least closer to home which can fullfill orders promplty without levying additional import taxes / shipping costs🙄
Thanks for covering techniques that use minimal equipment. For a variety of reasons, we might not be able or willing to use a lot of high end lighting gear in a given situation. Being able to do more with less is a clear sign of higher level of talent. :)
Nice video . Is the point of using F8 so it creates a darkend look and what would be difference if ambient light was off (room light ) . If so then woukd not beable to get this look at say F1.2 unless the power of light was way down. Also why do u have to match light to f8. So then perhaps u can get this look no matter the aperture cause if shooting at f1.2 then to match light to f1.2 would mean lot less power . So I guess what's point of f8 unless u can't say get all of her in focus say at f2 ,so then why not f4 unless depth if field dint Metter being there's a background and not trying to have a bokeh effect that dint matter being its nit a depth of field type of photo.
Great video as usual. What impact would you have by using a smaller softbox, maybe 25"? I imagine the light not being as soft or would that not be an issue since the softbox is so close to the model?
Thank you so much Mr. Hoey. I'm a beginner, but I've learnt so much from you. I was afraid and didn't know how to use a speed light before, your videos helped me so much. I just want to say Thank you. You are the best!
Gavin I love your videos. And this is a video I will be saving for future reference. A word of caution with the c-stand use. Long leg under the weight. Weight should be in the direction you tighten the knuckle.
Fantastic results with the minimalistic set-up. Loved it. Videos created by Mr. Gavin Hoey are always meaningful, informative, and full of energy and enthusiasm. 👍
I learned a lot with this video! I'm so happy with all the photos that I will be able to take one question about you laptop small monitor you use to see your light exposure on the subject
At 7;52 you said to "point the light meter at the light source you want to meter." My question comes up because of a video I watched by Mark Wallace where he said to point the light meter toward the camera. Which is the "correct method" to use a light meter? Point the meter to the light or to the camera? Inquiring minds want to know.
You know I'm perfectly happy with my Canon 6D but I do envy you one thing..... eye-detect focus. What a game-changer that must be for a portrait photographer. Anyway Gavin, another great video. I'm presenting to my local photoclub in 2 weeks "Studio protraits on a budget". I'll mostly be using information from this tutorial, as it's exactly what I want to demonstrate. I have a nice collapsible softbox like yours but I'll be using an extremely cheap NEEWER shoot-thru umbrella setup. They cost peanuts and take everything to a higher level than the on-camera flashes the club members mostly use. Thanks for the video. If you're ever in the South West of France I'll trade you some accommodation for a 2 hour demo at our lovely little club.
Great work Gavin! I only have one strobe, (Godox SK400II) and I have come to love this style of photography. Would this also be considered CHIAROSCURO LIGHTING? 🤔 Thank you for your work!
What's the difference in having a speedlight pointing toward the subject like you have there and one pointing away to the back of a reflective umbrella?
Not a tutorial as such but you can see me make this background for a previous Adorama TV video here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-U3bELLjNV98.html
Hi Marcus. I'm sure Adorama can supply hand painted background or like me you can DIY one like this ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-U3bELLjNV98.html
Great! I like the way you covered all the techniques so quickly. Is there a reason for having the white pop up relector blaced above the beams overhead? Also can you tell me a bit more about the timber you use on the floor. I have carpets and am thinking of ways to add a termporary hard surface in my space.Hence the curiosity.
Hello and thank you for the excellent video. I consider to purchase an 95cm softbox for my godox v1 and I wonder did the flash will have enough power to shoot with the particular softbox. Thank you in advance for your answer :)
Hi Andrey. I don't know which softbox you're looking at but if its silver inside, has a removable inner diffuser and is made of good quality fabric (everything I've tried from Glow is great quality) and you'll be in the same position as me in this video 👍
Dear Gavin, I'm afraid the end of this video has left me a bit confused - I had thought, to be considered a beauty dish, modifiers would have a center reflector in front of the source, yet that one doesn't, despite its nomenclatural designation. Might I ask what the correct (and, separately, practical, if different) definition of a beauty dish really is? Also, thank you and your wonderful compatriots so much for the work you do.
In my book, anything the ends with light passing through a diffusing material isn't a beauty dish, it's a softbox. It's a REALLY good softbox and in the bag is a reflecting plate that means it can be used like a beauty dish as long as you don't fit the inner or outer diffusers. It's a brilliant product whatever way you use it and whatever name you call it 😃
Gavin - what do you do with all these portraits you shoot? I'm sure the models might want a few for their portfolio, but your own portfolio has to be massive by now.
