In this episode I'll go through every stage of setting out a lean to roof including how to find the plumb cut and birds mouth, fixing methods for wall plates and double rafters and setting out for roof windows
I'm a retired joiner ..9yrs now..(wow!)....and it's been a pleasure watching you mate....a true tradesman....knowing exactly what to do...and making it look so easy...(I don't miss those cold Jan/Feb days at all)...absolutely loved your video...👍🏻
What an absolute pleasure to watch a true tradesman doing his work. The planning ahead and attention to detail to ensure that it works out perfectly is very impressive.
many thanks for doing this - so good to watch your skills ( and hopefully remember enough to learn some of them ! ) i randomly got this suggested in my feed and shall now go back to the beginning and watch your whole set of videos. so much better than the rubbish you get on the tv!
Did an extension roof almost identical to this at the end of last summer, working for a mate who is a 35 year seasoned chippy (I'm a 15 year skilled labourer/handyman), and I wish I had seen this video beforehand! Your attention to detail and care over the design/layout elements is phenomenal, really impressive, and a level of experience & knowledge "input" (and clear years of loving your craft) that I wish my mate still had! Great video...I'm now "Subscribed"!!! 👍🏼💪🏼👊🏼😁
That technique is gold, thanks. Theres nothing out there that explains how to find the angle of a lean too rafter especially in a way that is understandable. Gold !
Thank you for the comment Mike and I’m really glad you got something from our video. Just had a comment just saying ‘more working less talking’ so this is a nice follow up. Thanks for watching. 👍🏻
I think these builders who make vids of their work put the others to shame. Your skill, technique, quality control, site safety and cleanliness is there for all to see. Not just the end result but the hidden stuff that is so hard to see unless you are on top of every stage. One single mistake and all those that don't have the confidence to broadcast will pile in! The fact that you do this means you'll always be up at the top of the trade and customers can engage you with confidence. Thank God for RU-vid!
Not quite sure what to reply to that comment other than thank you very much. We as a team really enjoy what we do and get a lot out of making videos for RU-vid especially when we receive comments like yours. We appreciate your time for commenting and thank you for watching. 👍🏻
I've been watching many projects on the RU-vid. This has to be the best channel out there. It is so delightful to watch a knowledgeable nice lad with eye to detail explaining every step. Even the weather has to surrender to him. Nice job mate!
Hi T. That’s very kind of you to say we really appreciate that. We all really enjoy making these videos. Thanks for the support and watching our channel enjoy your weekend 👍🏻
Lean to, roof Mr A ! it’s leaning towards not leaning as well ! That’s enough of that. I am pleased to see that there is enough space beneath the sills to install your top flashing, I’ve come across several sets of drawings which ignore this, I think with the intention of getting a specific head height and tiling fall.
What a FANTASTIC way to work out your birds mouths! You got a new SUB outta me within 5 minutes of this video! So appreciative of stuff like this! Just hope I can remember it when it matters 😂
Hi Andrew thanks for the comment. I’ve been doing it a long time so if I can’t do something like this now it’s time to give it up 😂👍🏻 thanks for watching
Trying to get all the joints bang on is so dependent on so many variables ie the sole plate being dead level the outside wall being real parallel with the existing wall the nominal timber sizes being all the same size and square generally nowadays from my experience u can’t have all of them things falling in to place ( especially the timber sizes) so it’s always a compromise on a drawing it works perfectly but in reality it rarely does so u compensate as all chippies do on site and make it work but for me u still can’t beat traditional roof construction so great tutorial
Hi Dan. We do add the wall plate straps as well as required by building regs but the bedding on is mainly to get it bang on level and flat. If we bolted down into those light weight thermolite blocks they’d shatter. Thanks for the comment. 👍🏻
Great detailed explanation. I have 2 questions. 1. How do you add stepped dpc or cavity tray over the catnic openings for the weep vents? 2. Where the rafter bevel rests on the ledger board/bolted wall plate, in what instance would this become another birds mouth cut resting on top of the bolted plate?
Hi, Its a nice video detailing the rafters size measurement and headplate. Please advise the size of screw/bolts used for the headplate. It is very important and starting step to fix the headplate securely. Thanks
This method of setting out was used by an old carpenter who done nothing but 1st fix roofing kind of fool proof. He used to do a similar way for the hips but he nailed a scrap piece to wall plate be interesting to see how you set out hips.
Hi keep it up you are doing a great job and having fun making some brilliant videos superstar Ali Walsall west midlands england junction 10 m6 Walsall keep it up you
Be interested to learn how you do your lead work. We have a first floor timber balcony against pebbledash with French doors underneath which leak when it rains.
Hi Keith. I show that in the next episode very briefly at the start. It’s hard sometimes to show everything without the videos becoming to long and boring for everyone. Thanks for watching.
We have already fitted the cavity closures in readiness but we use a company to come in and fit the doors so we get the warranty and the fensa certificate. I wouldn’t know the make sorry but if you follow our channel I’ll be sure to mention it in the bi fold door and window install video for you 👍🏻
First of all thank you for passing on knowledge to us young lads, im a carpentry apprentice myself and love watching these. Probably a long shot but im doing my apprenticeship at a local hospital and really struggling to get any roofing evidence that i need to qualify, would you ever entertain having a labourer/ chippys mate with you on one of your projects?
Hi Lennon I’m really pleased to see that young lads are still taking up the trades and not aiming for the next Mr Beast. Unfortunately our roofs come as part of the extensions/lofts we do so I wouldn’t be able to pin point when the next one is as yet. I’d be more than happy to help you out otherwise. All the best with your apprenticeship mate and thanks for watching. 👍🏻
@@mrabuilders6723 Cheers for getting back to me. No thats fine mate, in all honesty i knew it was a long shot but i thought it was worth a go. Due to the nature of my job its hard to get evidence for things like fitting a staircase, doing cut roofs etc.
What I suggest Lennon is keep and eye on our content so you know when we are doing a job you need evidence for in the future and give us another poke and we can see if we can get you some evidence mate no probs. Cheers Lennon
Send us a list a list of things that you need evidence for to our email that's in our bio please mate, I'll take a look and when we've got a job that's on that list I'll get in touch and you can join us for the day. How's that mate?
