This Grommet thing has been driving me nuts for well over a year. Mikko Snellman did a wonderful video on the making of this where he makes it look really simple. Now I too can do it I realise it is in fact really simple. I can only assume that I too am really simple or just plain slow. It's taken me so long and caused me so much grief.
That being said there is not really any reason for this video other than it's my attempt to elaborate on the areas that confused me. If any one else has struggled with this "simple" project maybe you'll find some help here. Then again maybe I'm just making it more confusing. Let
me know.
****There’s a mistake in the very last move. I’ve pushed the last tail through one place to far. It should have gone through one spot back. Sorry. 🤦‍♂️
Mikko's video is here
• Single strand 8-plait ...
Check it out he is an extraordinary knotter, craftsman and generous teacher. The spike I use in this video is made by Mikko they are available via his wed site.
Hope this is of some use, please let me know. If you like my video share it, like, and subscribe. That way you'll get notice of new videos and I'll feel loved.
All the cord I use in my videos is made by me on my own rope walk. I sell cord in a range of colours through my shop, here's the link.

Hi Philip thanks so much for your video. It took me a while to make this knot until I carefully listned to your instructions and discovered that I needed to take care of two aspects: 1 the starting direction of the first pass you make to start the interweave - I always started in the other direction .... and 2, the most important, that it is always necessary to split only the pairs that came out of the same arch. After undestanding this important rules I also became aware of the fact that I usually stopped the interwave too soon and thus forgetting to make the last interweave. Now, thanks to your video, for me to make one of this knot it's only a matter of few minutes. Again Thank You very much for the patience you put in making this video

That’s music to my ears thanks for taking the time to let me know. I think my advantage is that I’m still learning a lot of this stuff myself so I know the parts I struggled with. I try to make those parts clear in my videos. Have you tried my new Rose Knot video. It’s a fun knot and easier than the grommet.

Thankyou for this video. I have been trying this grommet from Nikko's video as well, but couldn't get it right. The change to putting the constrictor knot only on the 2 strands helped a lot. Today I finally got it right. You'll understand the satisfaction from this. I used your Bloodknot cord which I can highly recommend 👍

Hello Philip. Thank you for producing this video. I like you struggled with Mikko's tutorial. Usually, they are easy for me to follow but for some reason I struggled until you clarified some details. Well done.

I also got a mobius first time - I did five turns and I think it only works with even number of turns. Also using hard laid makes a huge difference to the result. Fantastic video as always which now I can knock out pretty well. Thanks Philip.

Just to let you know how useful your video has been for me, I have made one of this knot around a metal ring of 5 cm of diameter thus converting it in a covering knot. The end result is very beautiful and can be used as a nice key holder. Thanks a lot

Hi Philip your video has been very useful to me for making this knot. One point need to be put on evidence: the numbers of turn must be always the same. so if you start with 4 turns then you have to take care to maintain this number for the subsequent 2 passes before you start the interweave. But you have soved the problem saing that to make sure to be righe it il necessary to stay always in the same groove. In the last pass of your video you are forced to make a extra turn because the standing end has moved back from the starting point but, in the end, you have maintained in 4 your total turns

Thank you for this. Tried and tried and tried... gave up and moved on to other knotty learning endeavors. I'm gonna have another go at this grommet feeling better armed to get a win this time. Appreciate all the explanation as you are working. Well done!

Excellent. As I say in the video, it's taken me a long long time to get it.

I have noted that when you begin the interweave you make a total of 9 arch which means that the arches must be twice the number of turns plus one. The odd number of the interweave is necessary to permit a continuous interweave until the end of the knot

I'm glad you found it useful, and thanks for commenting. Most knots have a logic, it's just sometimes really hard to see that logic. This one is now so easy, but man did I struggle with it in the beginning.

Hope you find my video useful. If so please consider supporting my endeavours by checking out my store. I have a small selection of hand made hard laid cord for sale. Traditional hard laid cord is the perfect cord for this style of decorative knotting. If you've not used it, it will change your knotting forever. bloodknot.bigcartel.com/

Your observation that you need to split the leads coming from beneath the arch was the key that made this project much easier . Thanks so much .

Many thanks for showing me the way Philip. I had tried so many times to tie this and failed. I had given up until I gave it one last shot thanks to your video tutorial. One point though. Like some others my grommets come with a Moibus twist. Did you ever come up with a reason why this could happen? I did think that it was inevitable given that the procedure is essentially inter-weaving a spiral but looking at pics of your finished grommet the twist doesn't appear to be there.

Thank you for the video! I also was impressed by this grommet from the same source and tried to repeat it. Made it but got Möbius loop. Also nice but not what was expected. Can you explain why or what mistake have I made?
@plemas
@plemas 5 лет назад
That's a tricky one. My guess would be that you didn't match the first four wraps. If they don't meet up in the same groove it might make for a twist. I'm only guessing though. Have you tried it again? If so was the result the same?
@eugenematison5571
@eugenematison5571 5 лет назад
After second attempt with the same result leaved as is and finalized as a keyfob. Now are waiting for next time when desire (and nicer rope) appears to make another ;). My guess - the odd number of initial turns.

I can't tell you how many times I tried and failed at this one. If you're in need of cord I make and sell cord. There's a link at the bottom of the description. bloodknot.bigcartel.com

Me too. Only two last attempts were successful. Some number of fancy stuff was made before I realized the structure of the knot enough ;) Just have looked at your site. Nice ropes made with love, it is seen at glance. But I am not in Australia. Think delivery cost to Europe will be much higher than the package itself. Here is what I got: dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/n8d01nsgtto93t9/Bloody%20Grommet%20Keyfob.JPG?dl=0 . Two free ends are hidden in grommet (half turn) before stem to ring and again passed and hidden in grommet after the two-strand "multi-turn" Matthew Walker knot. That is why the grommet is so fat.

Wow, I love what you've done here. Not sure how you've done it either which makes it even more intriguing. Depending where you are postage varies alot, though I am using a new courier which has brought the prices down a lot for Europe. Mikko is much closer though.

Philip Have you ever thought of trying to turn this into a 12 strand or such braid which I guess would have an O3 pattern. Can’t see how I’d start an expansion.
