If you see Walt again tell him M.D. Scott said hi. I worked with him as a conductor, yardmaster, and engineer for many years up until he retired. As an engineer, if i was paired with him i never had to worry about anything. He definitely knew his stuff.

Thanks for another interesting video. It was really Interesting to see them investigate the possible sink hole on the crossing. With all that rain you cannot be too careful. You would not want to derail such a big long train.
This channel is better than anything I ever saw on TV about trains, back when I used to watch TV. If I had a magic wand, I would just make versions of this channel for each of my interests with this same narrator, format, and production quality.

10:21 When I usually railfan at Griffith, IN. I always wonder to myself which way CN Z149-31 will go so I can set up in a good spot (intermodal from Port of Quebec, QC to Markham, IL). Some days he takes the CN Matteson Sub to Matteson, IL and eventually Markham Yard, and other days, he stays on the CN South Bend Sub directly to Markham. I originally thought congestion determined which line he took, but now that you give that explanation, it all makes sense now. Danny teaches me better than school. ❤🚆

As an aside, the electronic bell seen at the sinkhole segment at 9:00 minutes atop the crossbuck pole replaces, at many grade crossings, the mechanical bell and ringer of earlier days. The electronic bell is licensed for railroad use as a result of a patent which provided for the solid state recording ability of the patent holder's invention, recording audio onto an integrated circuit or chip. I traded his son for the actual railroad crossing bell used for the solid state recording. His son was using the bell as notification of accuracy while using a .22 rifle. This is a true story. The inventor's name is I.D. Sarrell. He passed several years ago. I have one of his banjos. 12:05 shows a mechanical bell atop the crossbuck pole for contrast.

As always your videos are special. I’ve personally been stuck on Old Tampa at Winston with the same train (M453) on a different day. I love those “pacman” hoppers. Glad you’re on high ground/many in Sarasota and Manatee Counties were not.
The 4-bay ADM hoppers at 8:20 are likely carrying dried distiller's grain (DDG), which is what's left after corn has been fermented to make ethanol. If loaded, they're likely being hauled from an ethanol plant to a cattle feed supplier, as DDG is high in protein. That size hopper is also used to haul things like barley and soy beans. Actually, having confidently asserted DDG, now I'm not so sure. The rough condition of the car sides on ADMX 64194 is typical of DDG use -- despite the name "dried", they can be quite moist and can freeze in the car in winter. Conversely, the black staining down the sides of the following car is typical of soy bean loading -- I think it's from load spillage on the roof that rots and runs down the side of the car. (Yum!)

My mother-in-law lives in Sebring, and about fifteen (15) years ago, a sinkhole right around the corner from her swallowed an entire house. Today, there is nothing but a fenced off hole where the house used to stand. Sinkholes are scary things, they can open up and swallow whole houses in just a few seconds.

Excellent, excellent video, Danny. Over here in Davenport / Haines City, I follow daily manifest M457, daily local L772, and the occasional northbound / southbound coal units to / from Orlando. Hearing the familiar "JA" Dispatcher voice (his name is Brian) @5:31 and @6:40 was really cool...he's one of CSX's best, keeps me well-informed of A-Line activity, and does a fantastic job of orchestrating moves on the single-track line through here. Dade City to Bushnell evokes nostalgia for me. As child the S line in those parts meant rides to Sarasota on The Silver Meteor. An uncle, Sammy Cruthers, used to switch the train at Wildwood. If we drove, US 301 paralleled the tracks much of the way. Dad would pull off the highway if we saw a train so we could watch it pass.
That looks like what we call 'pumping' in the road business - not a sinkhole. There is excess moisture under the bituminous and fine aggregate is being pumped out with the moisture by the heavy loading. You can see the wet fines (mud) collected on the edge of the pavement. It will have to be dug up and replaced.
Ive been getting into amateur photography recently. I love planespotting but i also dabble in railfanning too. I was out Saturday seeing what i could catch and ran across another railfan. Sinkholes are o joke in Florida. A few years ago, they were building an elevated expressway between Brandon and Tampa. It was three lanes wide, and was being built in the medium of the existing tollroad. One morning before opening the elevated, one of the support pillars was swallowed by a sinkhole, dropping the elevated roadway onto the existing tollway.
The incident you are talking about was over 15 years ago. Also, it wasn't a sinkhole it was a miscalculation in their test core drilling. They thought they had hit bedrock so they put the pilings in and when the roadbed was put on it sank into the ground. They had to tear down that section and put the pilings in deeper.
Anywhere you see a landscape with fairly flat ground and lots of roughly circular lakes, you know you're in sinkhole country. Florida's covered in them; there are a lot around Minneapolis, too.
Danny, as a fellow fan of DJI drones, please make sure to write to your local representatives regarding the proposed bill to ban their use and sale in the US. American drone manufacturer Skydio, has lobbied the senate to ban their sale under the guise of "Security," but the ulterior motive is simply the fact that Skydio makes an inferior product to DJI and can't compete.
I can't remember the last time I saw a mixed freight on British rails. Alas, our freight trains are all modular these days. I know it is more efficient to do things that way but it takes much of the joy of train-spotting away.
ADM is one of the largest grain companies in the world. No particular reason to assume the cars are out of St Louis -- they could be from any one of dozens of major locations in the US.

Thank you for this video, Danny, on what happens when someone finds a problem with the railroad tracks and how the local police and the railroad cooperate to ensure that there is or is not a need to prevent train activity until a potential problem can be fixed. I guess those guys were okay with your drone? You can see them looking up at it as they're examining the pavement. I always love the sound of the wheels on those Amtrak passenger cars, that singing noise they make.

The state of Florida is a ticking time bomb. Sink holes, tropical storms, over development. So, Danny, when the next big one hits, I'm expecting a video on how CSX and FEC deal with it. Now that will be highly interesting.
Hi Danny, great video as always. Those old CP Rail cylindrical covered hoppers with the Multimark (Pac Man) logo are patched out for OFOX, which is Residco, a rail leasing company. So they are "used cars". LOVE seeing that Multimark!

We got what was left of Debby up here north of the border. Tell you what, switching rail cars in torrential rain is not fun. Even with a good rain suit, you're getting soaked, your kicks never get to the hitch no matter how hard you let it go, you can't see jack so you have to go slower than normal, not to mention everything you walk on seems to turn into an ice rink 😂
I used to live in Jonesboro, GA, and I model the Central of Georgia Railroad. When we moved from GA to TN I had to tear down my HO scale layout and am planning to build another one pretty soon. All the railroad equipment I see these days are all too modern for my turn of the century railroad. I usually have to build my rolling stock from kits. Cheers from an ex-Georgian in eastern TN
