Several very rare, historically significant and extremely valuable Corvettes were destroyed or severely damaged. That entire region of Kentucky is susceptible to sinkholes. I love the shape of the 1st sinkhole. It reminds me of a fossil of some pre-histoic giant insect. I've always loved sinkholes. I've seen several, personally, over the decades. The last one I visited was in NYC. If I remember correctly, it was Fourth St. Though it was'nt massive, i t was still exciting. Sinkholes, radical lightening storms, and volcano/eruptions, are like spiritual veins. Earth/Space feels kind of like family. PS Thankyou for sharing these wonders!

Every time I read about one of these sink holes appearing I do wonder why some enterprising soul has not use one of these to dump all their rubbish or landfill. It would be interesting to see how long it would actually take to fill this, providing it was stable enough.

Can't believe I came across this! When the map of Florida is shown, the Fernandina Beach sinkhole is in my back yard. The video is a few years old, but this past fall the sinkhole was fixed. The guys that fixed it were super cool, and even used their backhoe to till my garden!

There is an area in Ayrshire, Scotland called the Burning Hills. There was a lot of open face mining done in the area because the hills are riddled with coal seams. Over 150 years ago somehow the coal caught fire and to this day puffs of smoke come up where a sink hole has just appeared. Just small ones compared to these ones but dangerous if walking the hills. My great grandmother 's cottage is in this area and she was hanging out the washing, talking to her neighbour who was also hanging her washing in the garden of the adjoining cottage in the 1930s. Suddenly the neighbour stopped talking and Great Granny thought she had gone indoors but hadn't said goodbye. Then she heard HELP cries. The neighbour had been swallowed by a sinkhole. It was difficult to get her out because it was exactly the width of her but this saved her from injury apart from scrapes and a few cuts. Can you imagine?

The last thing which was land liquefaction, has just happened in Sulawesi, Indonesia.. At the area greatly affected by the earthquake and tsunami in September 2018. One settlement area that was built from land reclamation had engulfed the whole town while the earthquake happened. This disaster had lead to 2100 death and 10000 injured with 5000+ missing people, engulfed in the giant landslide thats called Liquefaction...

I live in San Francisco, and I asked an engineering professor at SF State what he thought. He said that it was outrageous to build on landfill without anchoring the foundation to bedrock. Many here remember the Loma Prieta earthquake that struck during the World Series between San Francisco and Oakland. Major sections of the Marina, one of toniest neighborhoods in the City, collapsed because they also were built on landfill. I worked for several years in a building near the Millennium Tower. I have wondered if it is in the direction the building is likely to fall in an earthquake. Quite frankly, they couldn't pay me to live there, let alone get me to pay the prices they charge for what is, quite likely, a waiting deathtrap.
