What's fun is that the buildings are still standing, entirely operational and were converted into living spaces near the end of 2011.

Ik was toen bijna 10 jaar. Vanuit het vliegtuig zie je het Philips torentje met klok. Staande voor ons huis kon je die ook zien.

At the start of the war in the west, May 1940, Dutch airforce pilots were badly outnumbered as most of their best planes were destroyed on the ground. The remainder usually used a similar low-flying policy as the bombers during Operation "Oyster," to survive German fighters. They called this the 'HuBoBe' (Hue-Boe-Bay) tactic, from the words "Huisje-Boompje-Beestje" (House-Little Tree, Little Beast) because they were flying so low they had to beware flying into any of those.

That Venture at 05:57 probably lost that part of its wing when it hit a tree or a pole, flying so incredibly low. When the bombers first reach the Dutch coast, it almost seems as if they are looking for parking space!

I think I would rather had taken part in this raid in a Mosquito than a Ventura, any day.

My parents lived in Marconilaan and Torricellistraat. My late dad saw German gunners in flames jumping off Strijp S buildings. Later my mom’s house on Marconilaan 42 was confiscated by Germans (May - September 1944)
