I saw Siouxsie and The Banshees at The Capitol Theatre, Sydney in 1982 and I was shocked to see Robert Smith walk out on stage with them. Like the other attendees at the concert, we nudged our friends and said, "Look that's Robert Smith!!" Great concert, great night. "Kaleidoscope" is one of my all-time favourite albums. Smoking Gunja certainly helped the experience.
Yeah, they're both amazing (and both bands!) A pity that Siouxsie's still angry with Robert for leaving the Banshees before a tour somewhere in the '80s, but he didn't have any energy left, he felt drained. He went to the doctor and seemed to have a very bad case of blood poisoning, the doctor was shocked at the levels of poisoning and that he was still standing up. But Siouxsie probably felt betrayed, she didn't buy it. I can see that she was mad because it was minutes before a tour.. But I'd rather have her mad at me for eternity than die of some horrible disease while on tour... PS: Does anyone know what year this is at The Whistle Test?
I saw Siouxie And The Banshees live twice. The first concert was in Paris in spring 84 with Robert Smith on guitars. The second gig was at a festival in Mont-de-Marson (South West of France) with John Valentine Carruthers on guitars ...
I dedicate this to a long gone and short-lived love many many years ago. I used to sing and mimic this song to her, then we loved each other. Thank you A., you were heavenly and a relief among the Hell I was going through, which lasted more than I would have liked. Hope you are well and found your way.
I dig that hypnotic Drum pattern by "Budgie" which really enhances the power in the song. Budgie plays it so effortlessly! Siouxsie And Banshees were, in my opinion, the greatest exponents of the Gothic/Psychedelic movement!
@@DiceBaseballDigest actually, I read that Siouxsie would remove any number of his kit that it forced him to improvise irregular patterns...indeed, I bought Kaleidoscope back in '80 when it 1st came out drums has always been my favorite instrument and I was really fascinated by this album from the moment I played it.
Hauntingly beautiful. This still hits me the way it did 30 odd years ago. Everytime I hear it it stops me dead in my tracks. And the live versions always rise above the album versions. Siouxsie's soaring beatiful vocals. Robert Smith's playing is impeccable, and the bass has the dramatic power that drives the songs on. Budgie is still one of the best drummers out there. Love his intricate beats.
Really deep and dread. It goes so well with siouxsie's voice. I really enjoy listening to this, excellent piece of art. Robert Smith is the complement the band needed to sound like out of this world.
@@footbru I wouldn't say it's a stupid comment. John McGeoch was the best sound wizard they ever had on guitar.....but Robert Smith is no slouch in that department either.....one listen to the Pornography album would tell you that.
@@footbru Beginning of his career? Robert Smith has been in The Cure since 1977 😆 with some local small get-togethers going all the way back to 1975. Point being, there’s nothing to elevate on either side of this equation…..Robert saved their bacon, twice due to guitarists leaving. The second time was providence for Robert as well because The Cure were technically done after the Pornography tour. I don’t think anybody expected The Cure to come back with Japanese Whispers or The Top within 18 months. It was beneficial for Siouxsie and Robert…..Siouxsie got some fresh sounds and a different musical viewpoint with Robert added piano & guitar to the songs on Hyena and Robert got to see up close what a functioning band looks and sounds like. I’m also sure the songs and sounds from the Banshees leaked onto the Cure songs from that period, how could they not? You try burning the candle at both ends for weeks on end doing two albums at the same time 😆 The Cure from 1977-1982 were a good band but the live aspect was really hit or miss due to players coming and going (Porl Thompson, Mick Dempsey, etc.) They finally locked in the trio with Robert, Simon, and Lol…..but after the fistfight between Robert and Simon. That was it…..at least for that era of the group. What’s funny is that Robert has almost no memories of even playing on that 1983 Banshees tour or the handful of Cure shows that he played that summer. Drugs and no sleep can erase that tape in your brain real quick 😆
@@furnitureconsortium a more nuanced take on his collaboration - my take is that RS used S&tB as a refuge .... and got a lot from it, possibly more than he put in ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9b5N_HWAr9c.html
Let's be REALLY clear here. Robert Smith was a Banshee twice, once after McKay and Morris ran off crying during the 'Join Hands' tour, when The Cure was opening for The Banshees, and a second time during 'A Kiss In The Dreamhouse tour, through the recording and touring of 'Hyaena'. Siouxsie was never a member of The Cure.
@@USMCLP It's called "band-man 'splainin'." This was the kid you got stuck with in line with who knew more than you, and anyone else around, about the band you were about to see... and made sure everyone within a six block radius knew it. While perhaps well-intentioned, ends up being quite annoying.
She has stage presence and wonderful repertory. Her voice is good and combines with the style of the sound. Sadly, there are many technical impeccable voices that don´t have this. That´s why I love her work.
Monica Vicious But the best, the myth is Robert Smith :-) Anyway I'd say also Anneke Van Ginsbergen with The Gathering and Cristina Scabbia. On my opinion Lisa Gerrard is special because hasn't a simple beautiful voice, she just seems an ancient voice from the past.
I deeply regret not seeing Siouxsie And The Banshees in concert but the Banshees' "Melt!" 12 Inch Single /British Import was the last single I ever bought by them.
Sorry, gotta add my 2 cents. IMHO, Kaleidoscope and JuJu are the alterative. Why? Because of the best guitarist Siouxsie ever had, John McGeoch. He left Magazine (Who were amazing!!!) to explore newer different things with Siouxsie, played on most of Kaleidoscope and all of JuJu and really up'd their game. And for me, it was all down hill after he left. Including this. It just doesn't do it for me after hearing AND seeing them with John in the band. That night in August / Sept of 1981 at Perkins Palace in Pasadena, CA is a night I cannot forget. There were so few people in the audience that me and my brother stretched our arms out being 10 feet from the stage and neither of us touched a person on either side of us. Couldn't believe it! But what really astounded me was the 2 skinheads who were globbing (spitting) on the band. That is until John McGeoch took his guitar off and WHAM!, clobbered one of the skinheads right on the skinhead. That ... was awesome!!! And the band continued on sounding great. Amazing night :-) And remember, this song / era from Siouxsie, that's my opinion. Which compared to yours sucks of course. So just remember that. No need to flame me or anything. Just my 2 cents, maybe about 5 cents actually, but whatever. Aight, I'm out!
Yeah, that's a good story---especially the skinheads deservedly getting whomped upside the head by the guitarist, lol. Nobody likes getting spat on--that's some nasty shit, anyway.
dat ol' algoriddum is being exceptionally kind to me today. haven't listened to any heavy -eyeliner music in years and it gives me an absolute peak of the genre! i must have watched this at the time, but can't remember it at all... superb!
thx 4 posting my favorite Siouxsie song. Lucky enough to catch them in San Diego during the 1st Lollapalooza. Jane's Addiction headlined, but Siouxsie preceded them, shoved my way to front row to watch. Melt wasn't on the setlist, but they did play last beat of my heart, cam't remember who played guitar, it wasn't Robert though. Only saw him w/ the Cure, Pornography tour & others. For those to young and missed it, please get out there & find new music. I'm too old to do anything but watch & listen. Thanks again, with love.
Still sounds fresh. Siouxsie and Robert Smith in the same band. Historical moment. Won´t happen again...I think.....and don´t tell anyone...I like The Cure more than SATB!
@@donatelladelpriore3375 one of the worst times in his life apparently. The same year the cure rrecorded " pornography " arguably their darkest, but up there with the best of em in my book.Tortured artist often produce. Smith's guitar and effects are all over this trk and suit it perfectly.
Siouxsie and the banshees are amazing band with amazing vocals by gorgeous stunning Siouxsie Sioux and a fantastic drummer 🥁 budgie with amazing guitarist by Robert Smith awesome band 🎸🎤🥁🎵🎸🎸🎸🤘🏻💀🤘🏻
Um, No. Robert Smith was already well established with The Cure when he took a hiatus in late 1982-3 to join the Banshees and record Hyena and tour. They consequently recorded numerous songs together and recorded Nocturne as a live album at the Royal Albert Hall.
you forgot about fake christan conspeary lies of gothic music only came out after 1980 she got deal i think 1973-76, which mean she was playing small bar and shit for 10 years before then
I remember seeing them in Sydney and Robert was playing a 12 string guitar, it was mesmerising to my teenage brain. Yes the Cure had toured the year previously but I was too young to get in
The Glove and Banshees - I remember having a few friends in high school who were all into those bands along with the Cure of course. Jesus and the Marychain too. Fun times!
He stated in 78.Realesed 'Killing An Arab' Then '3 Imaginary Boys' album. The CUre supported The Banshees. RS was doing 2 sets a night. One with The Cure then The Banshees
